Tomorrow is two weeks in the hospital.

Two weeks tomorrow and I finally got an appointment with the orthopedic doctor.

I didn’t have my book one manuscript so I started working on book three with my phone. I had written a basic story with the prompts and it was the newest so I am starting to write a beginning while I waited for my daughter to copy over book one into Google docs. She did that last night. It’s slow going on the iPhone and Google docs.

I broke my foot a week and a half ago

I was standing there and my ankle twisted under me. My lower half of my body was numb so I didn’t feel it. I fell hitting things on my way down.

I was taken to the hospital and they splinted it and told me to go to orthopedic doctor. I couldn’t walk so they kept me till they could find a rehab hospital. No orthopedic doctor has examined my foot yet and it is still splinted. I am stuck in bed with my bedpan.

This was an important month for my writing and I can’t do anything about it. I will most likely miss the end of NANOWRIMO and the deadline to have book one sent to an editor. I was doing beta reader edits and some rewriting.

I won’t be updating much as using my iPhone is difficult for me, but I didn’t want to just disappear.

**********Cassie’s Point of View – using 61 word prompt “absurb”***

Cassie stared at the horror before her. Wayne was obviously dead as the blood surrounding his head was plentiful and she didn’t think he could live with so much blood loss. This was absurd. She had to get out of this cage and get to freedom. She had to touch him and bring his body toward her. She needed the keys!

**********Peter’s Point of View**********

Peter drove slowly down the street where he had last seen Cassie. He was on patrol every hour he was not working or attempting to sleep. He kept hoping that the van would be parked outside and he would see it and could call the police. He had been doing this for several days although he had lost track of the exact day she had gone missing.

Wait, he slowed down and stopped. There was an old gray van parked in front of one of the houses. The street was busy and it could be from any house. How was he going to be able to figure out which house it was at. Plus if it belonged to one of those two goons he was way outnumbered and he wasn’t a big, strong guy either. He would call the police and report it and see if they could do anything.

“Yes I need to talk to Detective Fisher and it’s urgent, please”

“Hold on sir, while I track him down.” Wayne tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. He hoped that he had found the vehicle at least. It would be a clue and hopefully one that would help solve Cassie’s disappearance.

“This is Detective Jack Fisher, how may I help you?”

“Listen this is Peter Smith and I am calling because I just found an old gray van on the street approximately where Cassie Jones disappeared several nights ago. There appear to be two people sitting in the front seat at least. I don’t know about what might be in the back, but I know there were at least three people involved in the actual snatching since I saw it happening.”

“There is a patrol car in the area and I will have them check it out. Did you happen to get the license plate? And whatever you do, do not approach the vehicle or the occupants in it. The police will handle it. Understand?”

“Yes sir I understand. I still can’t see the license plate number. The lights are off and so it isn’t visible from here. I am parked a little bit up the street on the opposite side of the street. I didn’t want to spook them off if it was them, but I am really worried about Cassie. It has been several days now and she is still missing.”

“Look, I understand, but you must be patient and stay out of it. Wait in your vehicle.”

**********Cassie’s Point of View”*********

Cassie was still studying the body before her and wondering if she was able to reach it through the bars. She remembered the rats from last night. They had chattered and hissed during the night as they chewed on Wayne’s body. She prayed they stayed out there with him and left her alone. What disgusting creatures they were.

She hated kneeling on this disgusting basement floor, but she had to get out of here and this might be her last chance before his buddies showed up and he warned her about them. So deciding the discomfort was worth it, she slowly reached out and tried to grab his shirt so she could attempt to pull him toward her. He was bald so there was no hair to pull on. The shirt is loose and she is trying not to pull hard enough that she pulls the shirt off rather than pull the body toward her. Slowly he moves. Inch by agonizing inch she pulls him just a little bit closer. She doesn’t know where the keys are or even if he has them on him. For all she knows he left them upstairs depending on whether he intended to enter the cell or not.

Finally a hand came towards her and gave her something more substantial to pull on. Gingerly she pulled on the hand. He moved towards the cell she was in and then stopped when it came into contact with the cell’s bars. She reached both hands out and searched the shirt for a pocket. Finding none, she moved down to his pants. Only the one side was against the bars. If they weren’t in that pocket she would have to try and stretch to the other side of his body to see if the keys were in the opposite pocket.

She felt the pocket from the outside first. Something was in there so she braced herself to slide her hand in. Her fingers touched something, her mind visualizing keys. She grasped it and slowly started to put it out. Her fingers had grabbed a string, she was disappointed, but continued pulling. It popped out of the pocket and landed on the floor. It was a small key attached to a string. It could be for the padlock on her cell. Hope began rising. Slowly she inched her fingers towards the key on the string so she could pull it towards her.

Picking it up. she stood up. and started to approach the padlock, praying that it was the key to her cell. She reached around the padlock from behind and tried to work the key into it. It was slow going and just when she thought she was out of luck, the padlock popped open. She felt her anger pacified as hope ran through her. She wiggled the padlock out of the hasp and pushed the cell door open.

Walking around Wayne’s body, she weakly climbed the stairs to the upper floor. She was very weak from not having any food for days. She knew she had lost weight as he work uniform was quite loose on her. She wasn’t heavy to begin with so she imagined her ribs were sticking out. She wanted something to eat, but she was worried that Wayne’s friends were here or maybe about to be and she wanted to get free of the house, but she wanted food she bad.

She looked at the table and the countertop to see if anything was handy. She was in the kitchen so there should be food of some sort and it really didn’t matter too much at this time what it was. All she saw was a bag of onions. Now she hated onions and didn’t know how much help eating an onion would be. She opened the cabinets and found very little. Had he been on his way out? He said he was going to “have her” and then leave her to his friends. She nearly tripped over the suitcases in the kitchen near the back door. What if he was waiting for a ride? What if it was his friends? She had to get out of here. She would worry about food later.

Pushing the suitcases aside she managed to unlock the back door and headed down the stairs to the driveway. Freedom! She realized she didn’t have her purse and couldn’t call the cops. She started back inside to look for a phone she could use. She had no idea where she was. Maybe she should knock on a neighbor’s door instead and explain her situation. Would they believe her?

As she returned to the outside porch steps she heard a voice shout, “Hey you, halt, you are supposed to be locked up what are you doing out here? Where’s Wayne?

Cassie panicked and ran to the house right across the driveway and pounded on the door as the two guys ran up to her. A man opened the door and she shouted, “Help me!”

The other two men stopped and turned to head back to the van when a cop appeared at the end of the driveway. “Hold it right there you two.” A gun was turned on them and they stopped. The neighbor had opened the door to Cassie and was talking to her.

Cassie, still in shock, realized that Peter was behind the cop. What in the world was Peter doing here. He stopped by the cop and said, “Those are the two guys who helped capture Cassie the other night. They were in the gray van.”

“Sir, you were told to wait in your car and we would take care of this.”

“I know sir and I am sorry, but I love this woman and I am not letting her out of my sight.”

“”Peter? Is that really you? You love me for real and you risked your life to find me? Oh my God, I love you too, I was just too stupid to see it before.” Cassie thanked the neighbor and headed out to the area where the cops were gathering around the two thugs. She hugged Peter and kissed him. She knew they had problems to work out, but if he loved her enough to risk his life she was sure they could work things out.

Detective Fisher arrived and surveyed the scene. A blond girl was hugging someone and that had to be Cassie and Peter. He wondered what happened to the other guy. The two in the van probably didn’t live here as the registration was for Butch Foulke and had another address on it. He didn’t see the bald guy and he knew there was supposed to be three of them. He approached the blond girl and the boy she was hugging.

“Cassie Jones?” The detective watched as she disengaged herself from the boy. He didn’t let go of her, but they both faced him.

“Yes, I’m Cassie Jones.”

“I am Detective Fisher and was assigned to your case. Were you held here against your will?”

“Yes sir, and well, I am sorry the guy who kidnapped me is dead. A cat tripped him coming down the basement stairs and he fell and hit his head. It looks like he bled out. The rats were eating him which was disgusting. I managed to grab a hold of his shirt and pull him against the cell and found the keys and was able to get myself out. I just came out of the door when his two cohorts came up the driveway and saw me. I ran to the neighbor’s house and one of your officers stopped those two guys. Then Peter showed up and he’s my hero. I kicked him out of my life and he says he really loves me and was trying to find me. We still have some issues, but I may have misjudged him.”

**********Cassie’s POV**********

Cassie tried to avoid touching anything. She had such a bad feeling about Wayne and she trusted her gut and canceled the date and the damn monster kidnapped her instead. First he ignored her and made her do the chasing, which made her want him more. How smug he must feel that now he had the upper hand. He obviously was in no rush to do anything with her because she hadn’t seen him since the evening he drugged her and hauled her off in that van. He hadn’t even offered her any food, just the water bottles which she still drank sparingly from. She hoped he hadn’t drugged them as well, but she needed water.

Now that it was lighter out she could see more of the cell. There was an envelope tucked behind the case of water. It had some writing on it. Was it for the post office or did the jerk write her a letter? She wasn’t in a rush to find out. She didn’t want to hear what he had to say. Although temptation might win out and she would have to check it out soon enough.

**********Wayne’s POV**********

Wayne wondered if she had read his letter yet. He also wondered how much longer he should wait before he made an appearance. She had caused him plenty of problems, but he was still wondering if he should take the time to screw her at least the one time. He didn’t own this house and so he had to make sure the landlord didn’t come sniffing around before he had the chance to clear out. He didn’t care if the place looked the same when he left or not since he didn’t expect to leave a forwarding address. He noticed one of the lights had blown out, but he didn’t have a bulb to replace it and he didn’t feel like going to the store to buy one.

“Who let that damn cat in?” It wound its way around Wayne’s legs and almost tripped him. Obviously kicking it out and not feeding it wasn’t effective. The damn cat was always in his way. The cat came with the house. He hated animals and was always kicking this one, but it didn’t take the hint and leave.

**********Cassie’s POV**********

Cassie wondered if he was planning to starve her to death? She still had water since she was taking it in slow sips, but as far as she could tell a few nights had passed and still no sign of Wayne or food. She was still huddled on the pile of blankets and comforters. She hated when she had to actually sleep.

She heard the door at the top of the basement open. Two legs appeared. Wayne’s? She didn’t know. Even though she didn’t trust him, she wanted some food.

“Hey doll!” His face appeared above the legs. He was grinning. God she hated him. How dare he do this to her. There was no sign of food in his hands.

“Let me out of here Wayne! What are you doing? This place is filthy. Why do you have me in a cage?”

“Did you read my love letter to you?”

“What letter? A love letter, eww! You make me sick. Let me go!

“Listen you, be glad that I decided to keep you for myself and not give you to my friends. They’ve been dying to get down here and have you all to themselves.”

“What do you mean, have me to themselves? And what makes you think I would rather be with the likes of you? You disgust me! Let me go you beast!”

“You’re going to be sorry you said that bitch! I don’t want you anymore and you can just deal with my friends until they tire of you.” Wayne went to turn around to head back up the stairs to the top when the cat tripped him up and he fell all the way down the stairs and cracked his head on the concrete floor.

Cassie stared in horror at his body splayed before her, blood dripping slowly out of his head wound. “Wayne, WAYNE! Oh God is he dead? Can you hear me God? I know I don’t go to church like I should, but I promise if you get me out of this alive I will go to church. Please….”

Wayne didn’t move or make a sound. She had no way of telling if he was dead or not. He fell almost all the way down and cracked his head on the cement floor. He could have broken his skull and damaged his brain and he could be dead. OH MY GOD! She wanted to scream, but she didn’t think there was anyone here to hear her. Unless his friends were up there and she sure didn’t want to summon them.

OK think, she tells herself. She wonders if she can reach him. If he had the keys on him she might be able to unlock the door and get out. Hopefully they weren’t in his hands because if they were they might have gone flying in the wrong direction as he tumbled down the stairs. Breathe, Cassie, breathe, in and out. You have to get yourself under control.

Cassie got down on her knees and tried to reach through the bars of her cage. He wasn’t that far, she might be able to grab a hold of him and pull him closer. Providing he is dead, of course, and doesn’t try to grab her. She could just barely touch his one extended hand. She needed to check his pulse.

**********Kimberley’s Point of View**********

Kimberley was still trying to absorb the situation involving her sister Cassie. Peter and his mom had arrived by the time Kimberley and Cassie’s mom, Janet Jones, got home from work at quarter after midnight last night. Peter tried to explain exactly what he had seen to Mrs. Jones. Cassie was still not home and she should have been home from work by 10:30 at the latest. Her mom was in shock. At first she went totally silent and didn’t move, even to sit down. Her daughter was in danger and that was all she was able to understand at that point. She licked her lips and stared at Peter as if he could produce her at will. She glanced around, but not really seeing them.

“I don’t understand,” she said after looking at each of them. “Cassie is never late. Cassie wouldn’t go anywhere without letting us know.”

“Mom that is what Peter is trying to tell us. He called me earlier to tell me what he saw and how he had tried to follow the van that she had been shoved into by that miserable rat she knew as Wayne. She was right to worry about him. She canceled the date because she was positive he was up to no good and she really thought he was the one who had sent that drugged candy through the post office. Thankfully that situation didn’t end up as bad as it could have. I have thought about the situation plenty, but I don’t ever remember her talking about where he lived or anything that might help us. That is why we thought his suggestion to meet him at the restaurant was a good one since she would drive herself there and back and not get into what was essentially a stranger’s car. However, I did not see this coming.”

Peter was pacing around the living room, “Look,” he said to Mrs. Jones, continuing to pace, “You have to call the police and somehow convince them that Cassie wouldn’t just disappear. She was always responsible and I am an eye witness although I wish I hadn’t had that accident which prevented me from seeing where they turned. I just know they were on Grant Street and had their left turn signal on although that doesn’t mean they turned left, of course.”

***

Kimberley finally persuaded her mother to call the police. Her mother just couldn’t believe this was happening and kept coming up with reasons why Cassie wasn’t home yet. Everyone that knew Cassie, knew that she was reliable and she certainly wouldn’t just not come home without telling someone. Plus there was Peter’s eyewitness account. He may be immature at times, but he was adamant that he loved Cassie and that she had been kidnapped.

“Do you have a picture of your daughter, Mrs. Jones?” The officer had listened to a very jumbled account of what had happened and even contacted the officer who had been the one to talk to Peter at the accident scene. They had his notes and noted that he didn’t appear to have been drinking so they felt it was a reliable account. The officer dispatched to the restaurant reported that the car was still in the parking lot. They put a boot on it in the hopes that the kidnappers wouldn’t try to remove it. Someone was set out to keep an eye on the car for now just in case they did decide to come back for it.

Peter wasn’t sure of the numbers of the houses where he had the accident, but that was all in the police report. There was the possibility that the vehicle didn’t belong to the person living in that house so finding it with just a description of an old gray van was not going to help much. Peter said it all happened so fast he didn’t have time to think about the license plate number.

“Did she have a cell phone, Mrs. Jones? If she does and it is turned on we might be able to track her by GPS. Sometimes kidnappers don’t think about that.” Mrs. Jones gave them her daughter’s cell phone number. They had tried to call it and it was going right into voice mail so it was probably turned off or the battery was dead.

“If you can think of anything that might help the investigation please call us and if we find something we’ll let you know. I don’t think I have to tell you that time is of the essence.”

***

The next morning looking down into the flower bed, Kimberley saw the child-size set of rabbit glasses. They had been Cassie’s favorites as a child and when their little sister, Margaret arrived, Cassie offered them to her once she became a toddler and she loved them too. Kimberley picked them up and started crying again. This can’t be happening, she shudders just thinking about Cassie being in that position due to that monster who had abducted her.

*****Cassie’s Point of View*****

Cassie was sitting in the dark. She was hunched together and trying to avoid the nasty, urine-smelling blankets below her. The smell was something she couldn’t do anything about and there was no fresh air so it smelled pretty bad in there. She was pretty sure she was in a basement although she couldn’t see the windows from where she was. There had been some light earlier, but it must be night now. She had no idea how many days she had been there.

She was taking small sips of the bottled water because she didn’t want to have to use the bucket to pee in. That was just gross. She examined her clothing and except for her shoes, everything else seemed to be intact. Did that mean she wasn’t raped? She hoped so. Memories were slowly returning and with it the realization that it had been Wayne who kidnapped her. He and his filthy friends. There were three of them altogether. Being right about her mistrust of him there at the end didn’t make her feel any better. She was currently locked up in a cage.

A rat scurried across the floor. Cassie shrieked, “Wayne, let me out of here. What are you trying to pull? Let me out NOW!” She hugged herself tighter. She so wanted this to be part of the drug-induced visions, but she was fairly sure that was a real rat.

*****Wayne’s Point of View*****

Wayne laughed out loud. He could hear Cassie screaming at him so she was ok anyhow. They didn’t give her too much of the drug. He was only worried about that since she interested him in a sexual way. Otherwise dead was easier to handle. He wondered if she had found the envelope yet. He had set it in the cell before they brought her in. He wanted her to know what she did wrong as far as he was concerned.

*****Kimberley’s Point of View*****

She gulped in a deep breath of air and forced it back out. She clasped her hand over her mouth and she tried to process what Peter had just told her about Cassie being abducted by Wayne. This couldn’t be happening. “Oh my God Peter, please tell me this is not true. I can’t believe this is happening. She was really beginning to think that Wayne was bad news and determined to stay away from him, but you’re saying he just snatched her up?”

“I wish I was making this up Kimberley. I asked my mom to drive past the restaurant so I could check her car and it is still there for now. One of those guys might realize they need to get it and hide it, but for now, it is still parked behind the restaurant and it is almost midnight. She left work at 10 PM and they left right after that. It was a quick snatch and grab.”

“Mom gets done work at midnight. I am afraid to call her and tell her, but I have to tell her something. She expects Cassie to be here when she gets home. Listen, Peter, would your mom bring you by here to help me tell my Mom and figure out what to do?”

“Mom’s listening to the whole conversation and she says we’ll be right over. Hold on, Kimberley.”

Swift Passage…

RIP Sue!

Sue Vincent's Daily Echo

A Guided Visualisation by Sue Vincent…

*

Close your eyes, relax and prepare for an inner journey, breathing deeply and easily.

You stand on a green mound by a sunlit sea. Far below you is a pristine shore of white sand. You hear the echoes as the waves wash gently, rhythmically, against the base of the cliff. The soft, rushing sound of water in the shingle whispers in the clear air of morning.

The sky is a pure blue, the colour of the Lady’s robe. Forget-me-not blue, and at its heart, as in the flower, the golden circle of the sun. The cry of a distant gull touches your heart with an unfathomable yearning, yet you are here, now, in this time and in this place. Three Things Challenge 554

Pensitivity101 Rules:

Welcome to The Three Things Challenge.
Below are three things that may, or may not, be related. Simply read the prompt and see where your creativity takes you.
You can use one, two or all three words in your post, there are no restrictions regarding length, style, or genre apart from keeping it family friendly.
You can use 3TC, #threethingschallenge or TTC as a tag and my logo if you wish.
Invite us along by creating a pingback to this post, then leave your link in the comments so that other people can read your writings and I’ll see it to respond to you directly. You might like to check out some of the other contributions while you’re there.

I schedule the challenge to go out around 6.30 am UK time, but pingbacks have to be approved manually so might not show immediately. This could be because I’m late accessing my blog or due to time differences, but I will get there, I promise!
I look forward to reading your responses, and as always thank you all for your continued support.

Your three words are:

SAME
WELL
TEMPTATION

**********Kimberley’s Point of View using the 100 word Friday Fictioneers Photo Prompt**********

Kimberley loved to bake and since she was feeling a little sorry for how rough things had been for Cassie these last few months, she decided to bake her favorite cookies. She knew her little brothers and sister would love them as well.

She realized it was getting late and she had to hurry up and get the kids ready for bed. She was mixing the icing when she heard her phone ring.

She glanced at the screen and saw a text as well. Kimberley, PLEASE take my call it read.

Peter? What in the world did the creep want?

**********Peter’s Point of View**********

“Kimberley, please don’t hang up, please, it’s important.”

“What do you want Peter. I am busy right now.”

“Look, I know you don’t like me and that’s fine, but I think Cassie is in trouble.”

“What do you mean in trouble? How?”

“You may not believe it, but I am still in love with Cassie. Things haven’t been the same without her and well I have been following her hoping to get to talk to her and well tonight I was sitting outside the restaurant waiting for her to come out and for the courage to speak to her, when an old gray van backed into the slot next to her car. You know it is kind of dark in the employee’s parking lot. I watched her come out and head towards her car. A guy got out of the van and she sort of hesitated and then continued walking towards him. Two guys got out of the van and walked behind her and she kind of leaned in like she was going to kiss him, but she sort of fell into him and they shoved her into the van. I swear to God!”

“What are you trying to say Peter? This isn’t funny!”

“I am not trying to be funny. I was just trying to tell the police what I saw and they said they can’t do anything until she is officially listed as missing and teenagers go off on their own all the time. There are a lot of temptations out there. I tried to tell them Cassie wasn’t like that, but they wouldn’t listen to me. I was trying to follow them and had a car in-between so they wouldn’t know I was chasing them and I didn’t see the car in front of me stop suddenly and I lost track of the van when I crashed into the back of the car. I have a rough idea where they were only.”

“Peter are you serious? Please tell me you are not serious. She should have been home about 5 minutes ago. She always lets us know if she’s going to be late or spend the night with a friend.”

“I am dead serious. I love her, I always have. I even got a real job now and work full time at the local department store stocking and doing deliveries and now it is a good thing since I will have to get a new truck since I am sure this one is totaled. Look my mom is about to pick me up, but you have to let your mom know if Cassie doesn’t come home and report her missing immediately. Get the ball rolling on this one now. I am worried.”

“Oh God, Peter, this can’t be happening. Did you get a look at the guys?”

“Not a good one. The first guy was bald. I could see that. The other two looked really rough and bad news.”

“Bald? Oh no! That sounds like Wayne. That was the guy she was supposed to go on a date with and then she chickened out last night. Oh my God, you think he kidnapped her for that? She was really beginning to think he was bad news and backed out of the date at the last moment. What am I going to tell my Mom?”

“Tell her what I told you and tell the police. I will go over the story with them again if you need me to. I would do anything for Cassie. I love her, Kimberley, I really do.”

My smiles:

My biggest smile would be getting out of the hospital after a week stay. Ugh!

Next, although book one still needs to be edited for the beta reader critiques (yes I am procrastinating but there is a time limit since it has to be to editor by May 1st) I have the middles of both book 2 and 3 done as I am writing them from my prompt sites.
