For visually challenged writers, the image shows a beach in the half-light, bounded by dark dunes and holding a silvery pool of water that mirrors the sky.

Silvery Pool

By Tessa Dean June 2020

The silvery pool glittered here and there where the sun poked through the clouds. The sand surrounding the pool held the heat from the day, and Suzanne dug her bare toes deep into the sand while sitting on a towel and watching her niece play in the water surrounded by the dunes.

The water wasn’t deep as far as she knew, so she didn’t worry about four-year-old Veronica playing in the water. She decided to work on her homework as she sat on the edge of the water while Veronica splashed around.

She looked up from her book and couldn’t find Veronica. Where had the child gone? Becoming frantic, she walked into the water and looked for any sign of the missing child. “Ronnie, where are you?”

“What are you looking for, Aunt Suzi?” Veronica was standing behind her on one of the dunes. Suzanne let her breath out and tried to calm down before speaking to Ronnie.

“Ronnie, don’t ever do that again. You tell me if you are going to get out of the water and go behind me.”

“Aunt Suzi, I did tell you, and you just mumbled something. I thought you heard me.”

Suzanne grabbed her towel, book, and Ronnie’s hand. “Let’s go,” she said.

    1. Yes it is. We lost our 4 year old in a large amusement park. It only took a moment to look away at the other one and she was gone. Thankfully they had a lost parents building. We headed there immediately and there she was. Some nice person had taken her there. It was very frightening and over so fast.

  1. Scariest moments that have ever happened to me, both with my children when they were young and with my grandchildren. Look down for just a second and poof! There are too many bad people in this world today and my fear was them getting snatched even though they were taught safety first…ALWAYS! 🙂

    1. Yes the most I worried about when my children were little was them wondering away which happened in a large amusement park, but now I know my daughters are very frantic when it comes to their children going out of their site at all. The world has changed in the 40 years since my kids were little.
