Riding the Rails
By Tessa Dean copyright August 2020
Mac and Stu raced towards the moving train, anxious that they may miss the next phase of their journey across the country. Grabbing for a handhold to pull themselves up and into the freight car, they helped each other over the threshold and into the dirty car.
They had jobs waiting on the east coast, and they were only halfway across the country to their destination. The jobs wouldn’t wait for them to arrive, so they had to make sure each freight car change went smoothly. Suddenly the train stopped, not a good sign. They hid as best they could.

Let’s hope it’s nothing to do with Mac and Stu. The treatment of those riding the rails without a ticket was often quite brutal.
