The Birthday Party Part 11 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9, Part 10)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Two-year-old Anthony sat down hard on his diapered butt, the padding in the diaper softening his landing. He started to cry a little bit and Ginny reached over and picked him up and put him in her lap to comfort him. She rubbed his hair and kissed his furrowed brow. She used a napkin to soak up his tears and he snuggled closer to her and quieted down.

Mrs. Banks brought the teapot over to the table and asked Ginny if she would like a refill. Ginny agreed even though her arms were filled with Anthony. She asked Thomas to add two spoons of sugar to her tea and stir it for her. He readily agreed.

Next Mrs. Bank brought over the coffee pot and asked her husband if he wanted another cup and after filling it asked Thomas if he would like a cup of coffee or another can of cola. He turned down the coffee and opted for another can of cola. Coffee wasn’t his favorite drink.

Mrs. Banks asked what the other boys were doing and Thomas said they were out tumbling on the mat and wrestling. The huge mat was much easier on the boys knees and elbows so they weren’t always scuffing them up.

Thomas looked at Ginny and she smiled at him. He cleared his throat and said, “Mom and Dad, Ginny and I would like to talk to you. We have both been thinking. We are both almost 20 years old and have been talking about our future. Our future together. We know we are still young and have schooling to finish, but we would like to get engaged with the understanding that we wouldn’t get married until we have both finished school and Ginny here wants to be a nurse so she will be in school for 4 years to get her BSN degree. I am going to technical school to become a mechanic and then work for dad. So I will be working and saving up the few years she will be in school longer than I will be. I am also hoping that you will be okay with me living at home until we get married. I will pay you rent, of course, and still help out with all the kids, but that way I can save for when we get married and look for a house or apartment of our own. Ginny still has to talk to her mother, but she doesn’t think she will object since we won’t get married for almost 5 years from now. Ginny hopes her mother won’t object to her living at home during that time and hopefully she won’t have to pay rent so she doesn’t have to work a full time job as well as going to school. She has a scholarship to pay for her schooling so that part is taken care of. I will have a student loan to pay for my technical school. We have tried to figure all the details out and think we have a pretty good grasp on them. Before I put the ring on her finger we are hoping for your blessing.”

His parents looked at each other and smiled. They had a feeling this was coming and couldn’t be happier. They loved Ginny and all their children did too.

The Birthday Party Part 10 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8, Part 9)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Today was the twins’ Baptism. The whole family gathered at the church. Everyone was dressed up in their Sunday best. The gang was picture perfect and they had several friends snapping pictures of the group.

“Boys, quit pushing each other so we can get a nice family shot for over the fireplace,” James said to his family.

“Dad, he pushed me first so I had to push him back,” said 5-year-old Billy.

“Did, not,” said 7-year-old Jason pushing him sideways.

“Did too.”

“Boys,” James said. “Enough already, stand still for a few minutes please.”

Thomas turned to Ginny who was beautiful in a pink polka-dotted dress and matching pink high heels which emphasized how slim she was. She usually wore flat shoes since she was so tall. She was almost as tall as Thomas in high heels. “That could be us in 20 years.”

Ginny tossed her long hair over shoulder and said in a serious tone, “Thomas, although I love children and especially your brothers and sister, I decided that I only want two children. I want a boy and a girl, what they call a perfect family.”

“I am a little disappointed. I was hoping for a large family. I grew up in one and just figured I would have one when I grew up.”

“Thomas, raising a family that large is not easy. Just ask your mom and dad. Sure they love all of you kids, but ask them if it is easy or hard. I am sure most of the time it is hard. Especially now with the twins and Anthony is only two still so they have their hands full with three kids under three still in diapers and perhaps Roger is still in diapers at three, I am not sure I can remember or not. I am sorry, but I am going to keep my resolve on the matter of not having 12 kids.”

“How about ten then? That is not quite as large.”

“Look Thomas, don’t start an argument here of all places. I am a lady and I will not resort to cursing, but you don’t want to see me angry, believe me.”

***

After church there was a reception. Everyone ate till they were stuffed. A waitress came around with a teapot and refilled Ginny’s cup. Ginny leaned back on the chair’s padding-covered back and closed her eyes. She was still mad at Thomas and didn’t feel like talking to him at the moment. She knew he was watching her, she could feel his eyes on her.

Everyone was watching the daily comedy show. Sherry and James each had a child and were changing their diapers on the mat that came in the diaper bag. They had to buy an extra setup since they had the two babies now. Anthony and Jacob shared one diaper bag and Mary had her own pink one. They always kept a couple of the larger diapers and pants in Mary’s diaper bag just in case Roger needed to be changed. He was potty-training, but still had an occasional mishap.

Ginny sighed and opened her eyes and looked over at Thomas. “Look, I am sorry about earlier, but we are going to have to compromise somehow on the subject of kids. We are talking marriage in about five years from now, but I don’t want this hanging between us. If we compromised in the middle that is six kids. That is still four more than I want, but I will consider six for the sake of compromise. Do you think you can live with us just having six kids?”

Thomas looked at her steadily. He thought for a bit, then said, “Ginny I love you and I would do whatever I can for you. If you are willing to compromise at six kids I could live with that. I don’t want to fight about this either.”

The Birthday Party Part 9 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7, Part 8)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Thomas, Ginny and his brothers all gathered around to see the pictures of the two new babies. His father had dropped the pictures off so they could all see before they brought them home. Thomas looked around as this would be the last time there was just ten kids. They were about to become a dozen.

“What’s their names Dad?” Thomas tried to quiet them all down so they could hear the names of their new brother and sister.

“Mary Elizabeth and Jacob John,” their father, James Banks, answered them. “Your sister is named after your mother’s two sisters and your brother is named after my brothers. Naming all of you kids has been quite difficult. It is hard getting two people to agree to a name and we had to do twelve of you.”

A slim woman came into the yard and the children ran to her, except Anthony who clung to Ginny’s skirt. Ginny whispered, “Is that the other aunt? Anthony isn’t letting go of my skirt. I remember what your Aunt Mary said the other night.”

“Yes that is my Aunt, Elizabeth Armstrong. She is the baby of the family.”

“Hi all! I am so excited to see my new niece and nephew. I am especially happy about my niece. You guys are going to have to take care of her. Keep her safe. She has 11 big brothers. She even happened to fall into the last in line when it came to her birth ranking.”

“Aunt Elizabeth, this is Ginny Carpenter, my girlfriend.”

“Nice to meet you Ginny. I see Anthony loves you too.”

“Ok, let’s go Beth and pick up Sherry and the twins,” James said. Excitement was gleaming in his eyes.
