“Hold on tight and pull the trigger,” my husband said for the umpteenth time.

“I don’t want to shoot this gun!”

He wouldn’t listen to me and just kept repeating himself and reminding to hold tight because it would kick back.

I finally pulled the trigger and I thought my heart was going to stop. That scared me silly. That was the first and last time I shot a gun. Never again.

Linda G Hill’s Rules:

Hey there! Welcome to the 8th annual Just Jot it January challenge! This year is going to be far simpler than the last couple of years. One prompt per day, link to that post, that’s it. Details below.

But why should you participate in this challenge? To keep the ol’ fingers warm and meet up with an awesome blogging community, that’s why! Just Jot it January, AKA JusJoJan, is a challenge to write a post every day of the month of January. We’ve grown from a handful of participants in 2014 to close to fifty for the past couple of years. Let’s see if we can make it to sixty this year!

Here are the JusJoJan Rules:

1. Just Jot It January starts January 1st, but it’s never too late to join in! Here, we run on the honour system; the “jot it” part of JusJoJan means that anything you jot down, anywhere (it doesn’t have to be a post, it can even be a grocery list), counts as a “jot.” If it makes it to your blog that day, great! If it waits a week to get from a sticky note to your screen, no problem!

2. I’ll post prompts at 2am my time (GMT -5). The prompt will be the word in quotation marks in the title of my 2am post. You don’t have to follow the prompt every day, but that will be where you leave your link for others to see. You’ll get a prompt for every day except Wednesday, when the prompt is simply my One-Liner Wednesday and on Saturday, when your prompt will be the Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS, which will appear at about 9:30am Friday. Each prompt post will include the rules.

3. Please ping back or link to the daily prompt. To ping back, just copy the URL from the daily prompt post, and paste it anywhere in your post. Check to make sure your link shows up where you want it to, and go back occasionally to see other bloggers’ entries – the more you visit others, the more they’ll visit you! Note: A) The newest pingbacks will be at the top of the comments section. B) Ping backs only work if you’re blogging on WordPress. Everyone else must paste a link manually.

4. Tag your post JusJoJan and/or #JusJoJan.

5. Write anything! Any length will do! It can even be a photo or a drawing – you’re going to title it, right? There’s your jot!

6. If your post is NSFW, do not ping back. Please leave your link in the comments with a warning.

7. If you’d like to, use the JusJoJan badge so that others can find your post more easily.

I am terrified of needles. As a child they used to have to chase me around the office to give me my shot. At the age of 18 I embarrassed my father at the emergency room. I had fallen and since I was carrying a bottle in my hand, I landed on it and shattered it into 100’s of pieces that had to be picked out of my hand one by one. I was already infected so it required a tetanus shot. I started yelling bloody murder although I didn’t run away this time. My dad said, “Haven’t you outgrown that yet?” Uh, well no I guess I haven’t. Next time I was 30 years old and my dad took me for outpatient surgery. The nurse walked into the room with two needles on a small tray. I was ready to start yelling, but I looked at my dad’s face and thought of last time and said to myself, ok self, it is time to get over this you are 30 years old now, not a child. I made it through.

Now I am a diabetic who had to learn to give herself shots. Granted the insulin pens are much easier. And now I am always in the hospital and always giving blood, getting insulin, flu shots or whatever. They still scare me, but mind over matter, and I make it through.

Waiting for my turn for the new Covid-19 vaccination. I just got the notice for the senior citizens, but I have to be 65 or over and I am just under 65. So I have to wait until the next time.

The Birthday Party Part 13 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10Part 11, Part 12)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

The Banks family and Ginny went to a local pool for the day. Today they didn’t have to swim in the dirty lake water. Ginny was happy because the cedar water in the lake was turning her bikini colors. She brought a new one that she kept just for swimming in a chlorinated pool. It was a beautiful shade of pink, her favorite color and it contrasted with her beautiful black hair.

She climbed the ladder to the upper level diving board. She arched her back in a majestic back dive and landed perfectly in the cool water of the pool. She came up to a chorus of clapping. She blushed as she tried to hide her embarrassment. No one knew it, but she was a trained diver and had been on her old school’s dive team. Even Thomas didn’t know.

The Birthday Party Part 12 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10, Part 11)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Mr. and Mrs. Banks always take the children on a retreat every summer. This year they have the twins to add to all the commotion. Plus there was Ginny in the picture now. Thomas didn’t want to leave Ginny for two weeks. So there was a discussion about what to do about Ginny. Her mother still hadn’t been told about the proposed engagement. She knew Thomas, of course, but not as well as the Banks knew Ginny. She was always over there and her mother was sick so it was better to not bother her all the time with having to be presentable for Thomas as she felt so bad to always be in her room when he was over and she didn’t usually get up and get dressed as it was hard on her. Thomas understood and he was fine with them spending most of their time together at his house and of course the kids all loved her, especially little Anthony. Ever since his first birthday party he had been entranced with her.

They always rented a large cabin on a lake and the older children slept in tents on the lakefront beach and the little ones slept in the rooms inside the cabin in bunkbeds. This year the twins would sleep in their playpens in the master bedroom, but that still left Ginny.

They could either get a larger tent and put a few more of the boys outside and then Ginny could have a room to herself or they could get a larger tent that divided into several living spaces and Ginny could camp out with the older kids. They decided to let Ginny decide since they didn’t know if she would like camping out and for that matter if her mother would be ok with her going at all. Even though she was 19 now, she still lived with her mother and she would be gone for 2 weeks. The cabin wasn’t close enough to make trips back and forth all the time. Ginny decided to sleep outside in the tent with the older boys. They found a tent that was large and was divided into a sitting room and several sleeping sections around the outside.

There would be 15 of them this year and so they would need at least four vehicles to carry all the stuff. Mr. and Mrs. Banks each had an SUV, plus so did Thomas and 17 year old Rory. Ginny had a white 2020 Kia Soul. If Ginny came they would need her car as well to haul all their camping equipment.

Mr. and Mrs. Banks went with Roger and Ginny to ask if Ginny could go with them and to let her mother know that she would be well chaperoned. It was a family vacation and Ginny had become a part of their family they felt over the last year or two. They also knew that Ginny was afraid to tell her mother that she wanted to be engaged and since she was afraid she might say no if they told her that now, they were waiting until after the trip to tell her the good news. Mrs. Carpenter agreed that Ginny could go on the family vacation with them. She already knew that Ginny was becoming attached to them and she was glad that she had someone she felt she could trust her daughter to because with her being so sick she wasn’t able to do much with or for Ginny.

***

Thomas and Ginny were at the lake’s edge and they were skipping stones and watching the ripples they made. They stopped to kiss occasionally, but they were both very shy about kissing in public and besides the little brothers would tease them unmercifully about it
