The Birthday Party Part 12 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10, Part 11)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Mr. and Mrs. Banks always take the children on a retreat every summer. This year they have the twins to add to all the commotion. Plus there was Ginny in the picture now. Thomas didn’t want to leave Ginny for two weeks. So there was a discussion about what to do about Ginny. Her mother still hadn’t been told about the proposed engagement. She knew Thomas, of course, but not as well as the Banks knew Ginny. She was always over there and her mother was sick so it was better to not bother her all the time with having to be presentable for Thomas as she felt so bad to always be in her room when he was over and she didn’t usually get up and get dressed as it was hard on her. Thomas understood and he was fine with them spending most of their time together at his house and of course the kids all loved her, especially little Anthony. Ever since his first birthday party he had been entranced with her.

They always rented a large cabin on a lake and the older children slept in tents on the lakefront beach and the little ones slept in the rooms inside the cabin in bunkbeds. This year the twins would sleep in their playpens in the master bedroom, but that still left Ginny.

They could either get a larger tent and put a few more of the boys outside and then Ginny could have a room to herself or they could get a larger tent that divided into several living spaces and Ginny could camp out with the older kids. They decided to let Ginny decide since they didn’t know if she would like camping out and for that matter if her mother would be ok with her going at all. Even though she was 19 now, she still lived with her mother and she would be gone for 2 weeks. The cabin wasn’t close enough to make trips back and forth all the time. Ginny decided to sleep outside in the tent with the older boys. They found a tent that was large and was divided into a sitting room and several sleeping sections around the outside.

There would be 15 of them this year and so they would need at least four vehicles to carry all the stuff. Mr. and Mrs. Banks each had an SUV, plus so did Thomas and 17 year old Rory. Ginny had a white 2020 Kia Soul. If Ginny came they would need her car as well to haul all their camping equipment.

Mr. and Mrs. Banks went with Roger and Ginny to ask if Ginny could go with them and to let her mother know that she would be well chaperoned. It was a family vacation and Ginny had become a part of their family they felt over the last year or two. They also knew that Ginny was afraid to tell her mother that she wanted to be engaged and since she was afraid she might say no if they told her that now, they were waiting until after the trip to tell her the good news. Mrs. Carpenter agreed that Ginny could go on the family vacation with them. She already knew that Ginny was becoming attached to them and she was glad that she had someone she felt she could trust her daughter to because with her being so sick she wasn’t able to do much with or for Ginny.

Thomas and Ginny were at the lake’s edge and they were skipping stones and watching the ripples they made. They stopped to kiss occasionally, but they were both very shy about kissing in public and besides the little brothers would tease them unmercifully about it
