By Tessa Dean January 2021

The weather was starting to change. The lake vacation seemed long ago. School was starting back into session and so most of the Banks children were busy getting ready for their first days of school. There was school shopping to do, both clothes and school supplies. Each child was given a list by their teacher as to what school supplies they would need so none were purchased before the school year began.

Every year Mrs. Banks collected all the unused items so she was ready to start filling each child’s list of required school supplies. Thomas was in technical school for auto mechanics and he used whatever supplies weren’t needed by his brothers.

***

Thomas and Ginny were sitting on the window bench their faces pressed to the window pane as they watched the sparrows flittering around. The weather was getting cooler and soon snow flakes would be flurrying about.

They were talking about the dimensions of the apartment they were going to look for. They had all the brochures from the local apartment complexes, plus the ads for any private owners offering apartments. Although they were only a couple right now and one bedroom would work, they were planning on starting their family once they were married and so they were thinking about a two bedroom apartment if it would fit into their budget. If not they would have to wait until the time came

Mrs. Carpenter was finally told about the engagement and Ginny now sported a lovely diamond engagement ring that Thomas had picked out for her all by himself. He had surprised her with the ring by tying it on a ribbon around a teddy bear’s neck that he had won for her at the carnival. He got down on one knee right there in front of all their friends. The boys were all laughing, but the girls were all crying. Ginny was the first of the group to be engaged. A couple of their friends already had babies, but they weren’t married.

The Birthday Party Part 16 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10Part 11Part 12Part 13Part 14, Part 15)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Ginny was freshly bathed after a swim in the lake. She sat on the porch with Thomas and they talked about world affairs. They didn’t always agree on politics and church policies, just like any couple, but usually they could have a conversation that was friendly. They disagreed about the current political unrest and other current events and usually ended up just agreeing to disagree and not fight about it.

One of the their biggest items though was their religions. They had begun making plans for their wedding despite it being years off and her mother not even knowing they were engaged yet. They liked to make plans and see what they absolutely agreed upon and what they didn’t and figure out what they were going to do about it. The hardest challenge so far has been what church they will be married in. Ginny didn’t really go to church so to her it didn’t matter too much, but Thomas was Catholic and therefore since she wasn’t, they had been told that they couldn’t be married in his church which was a Catholic Church. This bothered him a lot.

***

“Please pass the crescent rolls, Thomas,” Mr. Banks asked, puzzled as to why they weren’t saying much. Usually they were excitely talking about their wedding plans.

“Mom and Dad, Ginny and I have a problem with our wedding plans. It is kind of a big problem for me anyhow.” Thomas spoke very seriously and both parents knew something was up.

“What is it son?” Mrs. Banks looked from Thomas to Ginny, who was just as serious as he was.

“We’re Catholic and I want to get married in our church. I have gone there ever since I was a baby and this is important to me, but I have been told that since Ginny is not Catholic we can’t be married there.”

“Well son that is not true. You can still be married in the Catholic church, but there are some things to consider and you two need to work this out before signing anything and going through the church required programs. You Thomas, have to state that you will remain a Catholic despite what you spouse does. Your children do not have to be raised Catholic although you must promise to try and raise your children as Catholic and you must respect Ginny and her faith, whatever it might be. If you can work these things out there is no reason that you can’t be married in our church.”

Thomas looked surprised. “Are you sure dad? That wasn’t what I had heard.”

“Look it might not be easy and I don’t know Ginny’s faith or if she even believes in God, but you can still get married in the Catholic church and you don’t have to raise the children to be Catholic if Ginny is against it and you can abide by her wishes.”

Everyone turned to look at Ginny. “I don’t go to church anymore, but as a child I went to the local Methodist church with my Mom. My Dad didn’t go to church. I don’t know how I feel about God right now, but I have no problem raising our children as Catholic if that is your desire, Thomas.”

“There is one other thing. True Catholics don’t believe in birth control which is one reason why we have 12 children. If you aren’t planning on children or on just having a few you might want to consider this.”

Thomas said, “Ginny and I had a discussion and we left it at we would compromise and have 6 children. Ginny only wanted two and I wanted 12 like our family. She finally agreed on six, but I know that is not her true wish. We would have to use some sort of birth control most likely. Even if it is just watching the calendar and not having sex as often as we might want. I know they don’t believe in birth control pills, diaphragms etc.”

Ginny looked exasperated at the current conversation. “I don’t want to come between you and your faith and since I do love you I will abide by the Catholic rules and just hope we don’t end up with 12 or more children. Ok, this is a delicate subject. Thomas and I are still virgins, but we are almost 20 years old and our relationship is growing closer. What do we do about not having children before we are ready. Since we aren’t married yet, can I use my birth control pills still. I am on them just in case because I expect to need them shortly. My feelings for Thomas are growing despite our desire to wait until after school to get married. Actually I have been having second thoughts on about waiting until I finish school. I love Thomas and your family and want to start having a family sooner than 5 years from now.”

“You mean that you are willing to get married even sooner, Ginny?” Thomas was grinning ear to ear.

“Yes, Thomas, I would like to start planning our wedding for real and for let’s say in another year, two at the most.”

“I am so happy to hear this. What do you think Mom and Dad?”

“Well you two are almost 20 and I think a year or two is a good time to get married. You need about a year to properly plan a wedding so that is a good time frame.” Mrs. Banks smiled at the two of them. “I think there is someone you need to tell right away though. Your Mom needs to know what is going on Ginny and will she be well enough to help you plan the wedding or do you need my help? I don’t want to offend her.”

“I will ask her Mrs. Banks. I think she will be happy for the help because I know it is hard for her to do a lot of things, but I am sure she will want to be involved. I know she likes Thomas so that shouldn’t be a problem. I am sure she will give her blessing.”

Thomas and Ginny grabbed hold of each other’s hands and started whispering. They left the dinner table to start making plans for real now.

The Weekly Smile for the 25th of January #weeklysmile

The Weekly Smile for the 25th of January #weeklysmile

My smile would have to be the amount of writing I am getting done. Book 2 of the first series is on hold at the moment while I work on the beta reader’s constructive criticism. Nothing major so far and I am on the second reader and so far the two have not found the same things so I am not sure if that is good or bad. In some ways it is good because they are finding more things. Phrases rather than complete sentences and lots of proofreading type errors. I tend to forget the 2nd quotes on dialog all the time. Run on sentences, etc.

But what really is making me smile is that I have a possibility of another book on my hands. Different genre. More young adult romance type of thing. I started a prompt and it is a daily one. It has 3 words (not related) and you can create a post. Well the first one came to me after I had already finished and published the blog post so went back and redid it and then the next day the words fit and so on and now I have a 15 part serial story all from prompts and it has the makings of a YA book. I am not real familiar with that genre so will have to do some research, but it is just flowing so I think it is a good possibility I have going right now for another book/series. The series part I am not sure about, but definitely think one book can come from this.

#JusJoJan prompt the 28th – “Storm”

**********

The howling and screeching of the wind woke me up and the sounds were terrifying and feeding into my fear of thunder and lightning storms. The house was located in the midst of a lot of trees, many of which were old and very large and partially dead. They were creaking and groaning in the powerful wind. My fears were growing as the intensity of the storm increased.

It got to the point that I had my hands over my ears and my head was under the covers. I was in constant fear that one of those huge trees was going to come down on my head and since I slept just under the roof I would be the first in line if one came down.

Luckily the only thing that came down were some huge branches and not a lot of damage was done. We were lucky.

Linda G Hill’s Rules:

Hey there! Welcome to the 8th annual Just Jot it January challenge! This year is going to be far simpler than the last couple of years. One prompt per day, link to that post, that’s it. Details below.

But why should you participate in this challenge? To keep the ol’ fingers warm and meet up with an awesome blogging community, that’s why! Just Jot it January, AKA JusJoJan, is a challenge to write a post every day of the month of January. We’ve grown from a handful of participants in 2014 to close to fifty for the past couple of years. Let’s see if we can make it to sixty this year!

Here are the JusJoJan Rules:

1. Just Jot It January starts January 1st, but it’s never too late to join in! Here, we run on the honour system; the “jot it” part of JusJoJan means that anything you jot down, anywhere (it doesn’t have to be a post, it can even be a grocery list), counts as a “jot.” If it makes it to your blog that day, great! If it waits a week to get from a sticky note to your screen, no problem!

2. I’ll post prompts at 2am my time (GMT -5). The prompt will be the word in quotation marks in the title of my 2am post. You don’t have to follow the prompt every day, but that will be where you leave your link for others to see. You’ll get a prompt for every day except Wednesday, when the prompt is simply my One-Liner Wednesday and on Saturday, when your prompt will be the Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS, which will appear at about 9:30am Friday. Each prompt post will include the rules.

3. Please ping back or link to the daily prompt. To ping back, just copy the URL from the daily prompt post, and paste it anywhere in your post. Check to make sure your link shows up where you want it to, and go back occasionally to see other bloggers’ entries – the more you visit others, the more they’ll visit you! Note: A) The newest pingbacks will be at the top of the comments section. B) Ping backs only work if you’re blogging on WordPress. Everyone else must paste a link manually.

4. Tag your post JusJoJan and/or #JusJoJan.

5. Write anything! Any length will do! It can even be a photo or a drawing – you’re going to title it, right? There’s your jot!

6. If your post is NSFW, do not ping back. Please leave your link in the comments with a warning.

7. If you’d like to, use the JusJoJan badge so that others can find your post more easily.
