Jenny and Josh were approaching a huge rock along the path they were hiking on. The path curved around the rock and you couldn’t see what was behind it. The path was also lined with trees which blocked their view on the sides. They had been told that mountain lions and black bears lived in the area and they wanted a clear view of the path.

The rock was considered to be the home of the guardian of the area. Did the guardian live behind it everyone wondered? Perhaps he lived on top of it. No one had been brave enough to follow the path around the back of the monstrous sized rock to find out.

Jenny and Josh weren’t far away now. Should they take the chance and try going around the rock or not? “Let’s take a break and think about it. Maybe eat something,” Josh said.

“Josh what about the smell of food? Will it bring the bears and mountain lions out to attack us?

“I didn’t think of that. I am curious about what is further along that path, but the stories that are being told aren’t good omens for it to be a good idea.”

“Josh, I can live without finding out about guardians, mountain lions and black bears. Let’s just turn around and find somewhere else to camp tonight.”

Taking one last look, they turned around and headed back along the trail to find a more open area where they could spot the enemy if there was one.

Reena’s Exploration Challenge #170

Reena’s Exploration Challenge #170

Welcome to yet another week!

I don’t see the scenario changing as expected. I see faint glimmers of hope, not the bright sun. Will 2021 be another transitional year, or a pathbreaking year?

Let’s go off at a tangent, and conquer —- our mindsets, if nothing else. Control the controllable!

Write a post on your blog, and copy-paste the link in Comments. In case you are using a pingback, do check back to see if it has worked.

Last, but not least, don’t forget to tag the post “Reena’s Exploration Challenge” for easy location in the blog roll.

**********

There are so many things that we can’t control. I don’t see this year being much better than last year although one can hope.

As far as things we can control, that is a very small list in my opinion.

  1. I can get a vaccine, but I can’t control what others do. I also can’t control how the vaccine will work considering how little testing was done on them.
  2. I can order most of my products online to avoid stores, but sometimes you can’t avoid it completely.
  3. I can use telemed for most of my appointments, but some I simply have to go to. I have to go to the eye doctor and the lung doctor and the podiatrist. Oh and the nephrologist for my kidneys. I think that could have been done by telemed since he wasn’t actually listening to or touching my kidneys, but they made me come in. I will have to see the cardiologist in person as well too. And my transportation is in person.

Anthony had pulled all the papers on local apartments and Thomas and Ginny’s wedding plans out and started to scribble all over them. “What is the meaning of this Anthony?” Thomas was shouting at the two-year-old.

Anthony just sat there and continued to draw on the papers. The words Thomas was shouting had no meaning for him. He saw paper and pencils and started scribbling, his form of writing like he had seen the adults do. He figured the pages were for writing.

Ginny began to gather up the pages and removed the last one from the baby’s hand. He started crying. Ginny handed him some blank pages to scribble on. He quieted down and Ginny began to access the damage that was done.

“Thomas please calm down. He doesn’t understand what he has done. I think we can remake these lists fairly easy. Who knows, maybe the new changes might be better. As for the apartments, most of the ones in the paper have most likely been taken already and we aren’t quite ready to rent yet. We are still saving for our deposits. We’ll go back and get new copies of the local apartment rentals. I believe the store downtown keeps a regular supply of them so we can get new ones. Problem solved. Please calm down.”

#JusJoJan, Non-Fiction, Prompt

#JusJoJan prompt the 29th – “Beach”

JusJoJan prompt the 29th – “Beach”

**********

Right after we got married my now ex-husband joined the Marine Corps. We ended up stationed near the beach and the first home we had was only five minutes away and we went to the beach almost every day when he came home from the base. He was allowed to live off-base since we were married, although they were not happy about it.

I loved crabs and although my ex didn’t he would go and get me a bushel of crabs and take our hibachi down to the beach and cook them for me. Back then we used the salt water from the ocean although I wouldn’t do that now. That was in 1977.

Sometimes we invited our friends along for the feast. One day one of those friends who happened to be a neighbor came over and asked me if I wanted the rest of the bushel of crabs they had bought. They weren’t going to eat them. I said sure and was excited at the prospect. I got out the large pan, filled it to the top with water and had it boiling by the time he got back with them. They were in a paper bag that was falling apart. I looked at it wondering if they were going to escape the bag. However, that was the least of my worries. When I went to pick up the first crab to drop it in the water I used a pair of tongs. I wouldn’t touch them. I dropped it and it started running around the kitchen and I was barefoot. I jumped on top of the dryer and stayed there until my husband came home and stopped laughing long enough to pick it up and put it in the pot. He finished putting the rest in for me, but he was still laughing.

I enjoyed the crabs anyhow, but I was not very happy over what happened and his laughing at me. That isn’t the reason he is the ex now, but it came close, ha ha!

Linda G Hill’s Rules:

Hey there! Welcome to the 8th annual Just Jot it January challenge! This year is going to be far simpler than the last couple of years. One prompt per day, link to that post, that’s it. Details below.

But why should you participate in this challenge? To keep the ol’ fingers warm and meet up with an awesome blogging community, that’s why! Just Jot it January, AKA JusJoJan, is a challenge to write a post every day of the month of January. We’ve grown from a handful of participants in 2014 to close to fifty for the past couple of years. Let’s see if we can make it to sixty this year!

Here are the JusJoJan Rules:

1. Just Jot It January starts January 1st, but it’s never too late to join in! Here, we run on the honour system; the “jot it” part of JusJoJan means that anything you jot down, anywhere (it doesn’t have to be a post, it can even be a grocery list), counts as a “jot.” If it makes it to your blog that day, great! If it waits a week to get from a sticky note to your screen, no problem!

2. I’ll post prompts at 2am my time (GMT -5). The prompt will be the word in quotation marks in the title of my 2am post. You don’t have to follow the prompt every day, but that will be where you leave your link for others to see. You’ll get a prompt for every day except Wednesday, when the prompt is simply my One-Liner Wednesday and on Saturday, when your prompt will be the Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS, which will appear at about 9:30am Friday. Each prompt post will include the rules.

3. Please ping back or link to the daily prompt. To ping back, just copy the URL from the daily prompt post, and paste it anywhere in your post. Check to make sure your link shows up where you want it to, and go back occasionally to see other bloggers’ entries – the more you visit others, the more they’ll visit you! Note: A) The newest pingbacks will be at the top of the comments section. B) Ping backs only work if you’re blogging on WordPress. Everyone else must paste a link manually.

4. Tag your post JusJoJan and/or #JusJoJan.

5. Write anything! Any length will do! It can even be a photo or a drawing – you’re going to title it, right? There’s your jot!

6. If your post is NSFW, do not ping back. Please leave your link in the comments with a warning.

7. If you’d like to, use the JusJoJan badge so that others can find your post more easily.

Ginny woke up to a cool air blowing over her. The blankets were down around her feet. Somehow she had kicked them off after returning to bed once she had put Anthony back down to bed. It was still early morning and no one was stirring, but someone either had turned down the heat or opened a window near her. She sat up and looked around. She wasn’t used to waking up on a couch rather than her own bed.

“Boo!” A young voice came from behind the couch. It was Roger, Thomas’s four-year-old brother. He had on a pair of shoes along with his pajamas.

“What are you doing up so early, Roger?” Ginny asked him as he climbed up on the couch with her.

“I couldn’t sleep. There was a dog barking outside.” The next thing she knew there was Anthony trailing his soft blanket behind him. He yawned and then climbed up beside Roger and right on Ginny’s lap. She pulled the blankets up and covered them all but their faces. Anthony yawned again and it had a ripple effect and they were all yawning.

Mrs. Banks came down to start getting breakfast ready. “It sure is cold down here. Do you have a window open?”

Ginny said, “No, I don’t have a window open, but it is cold down here. Is the heater working?”

Mrs. Banks went to check on it while Ginny wandered over to the window and glanced out at the snow covering their little part of the world. The sparrows were flying around trying to keep warm. It was strange that sparrows didn’t fly down south for the winter Ginny thought.

Everyone must have sensed it was time for breakfast as they started to appear one by one. Thomas came over to the couch and gave Ginny a quick kiss. “How did you sleep,” he asked her.

“Not very well,’ she said. ‘Anthony came down here twice during the night and then Roger came down because he said the dogs were barking outside. He seemed to fear them or maybe he was shaking from the cold. It is very cold down here. And Anthony can now climb out of his crib all by himself. He woke me up climbing on the couch with me.”

Thomas turned on the television and the first show was about the civil unrest in the world. Ginny shook her head. He flipped the channel and there were divers on a high dive. They arched their backs and did a back dive just like Ginny had done that day during the summer retreat and they had spent the day at the pool. He flipped it again and this time the show featured ballet dancers. “Do you miss it Ginny, ballet I mean,” Thomas watched the majestic dancers.

“Not very much, Thomas although occasionally I will see some dancers and wonder what if.” Ginny snuggled against Thomas, the two boys in her lap. The warmth of their bodies making her feel more mellow. The house seemed warmer perhaps Mrs. Banks was able to figure out what was wrong.

The smell of breakfast began to waft through the house. Ginny was getting hungry. She got up after lifting the two boys off of her and went to help Mrs. Banks with breakfast. She rolled out the crescent rolls and put them in the oven while Mrs. Banks fried up the bacon and eggs and got out the cheese ready to put the sandwiches together as the family began arriving at the table.

Thomas was looking through the Sunday paper and found the apartments for rent section. “Hey Ginny, come look at this ad. This apartment’s dimensions are huge and there are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It’s on the other side of town so still fairly close to everything.”

“Oh Thomas, how much is the rent? If it’s that large it has to be a lot of rent, surely.”

“You know we are probably going to have to get a one bedroom apartment to start. I may have a college scholarship, but my part time job is not going to provide much. We have to live mostly on what you make and you have to pay for your education at the technical school so we will have student loans to pay for between your classes and whatever my scholarship doesn’t pay for.”

“Oh Ginny, I can dream can’t I?”

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Ginny was spending the night at the Banks’ house tonight as the weather had turned nasty and the snow was flying and the roads were icy. Thomas feared for her trying to drive home in this weather so a conference was held between the three parents and it was decided that Ginny could stay the night, but she had to promise to stay downstairs in the living room and on the couch. Thomas and Ginny were still virgins and had sort of decided to wait until they were married and so they weren’t planning on any hanky panky.

Sometime in the early morning Ginny felt a soft item hit her followed by elbows and knees. “Thomas?” Ginny asked groggily.

“Nope,” a very childish voice answered. Ginny got up and turned on the lamp by the couch. It was Anthony and his favorite blanket, now ensconced in her lap. “Anthony, what are you doing up and down here with me. How did you get out of your crib?”

Anthony sucked his thumb and just cuddled closer to her. Picking him up she headed upstairs mindful of the promise to stay down there on the couch, but surely bringing Anthony back up to bed wasn’t going to be a problem.

She went into his room and the crib side was still up. Anthony now knew how to climb out of his crib. She went to the master bedroom and knocked on the door. Mr. Banks opened it and looked out. “What’s going on? Why are you up here? Anthony?”

“I am sorry Mr. Banks, but Anthony came downstairs on his own and climbed into bed with me. I brought him up here only to find out he managed to climb out of the crib. It looks like it is time to move him to the big boy bed that is waiting for him.
