Let me Out!

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Mary Ellen pounded her small fists on the steel bars. She had been imprisoned by some maniac who lured her off the street and when she got close enough he grabbed her and threw her into the back of his van. He used chloroform to knock her out and pulled a large blanket out so he could sneak her into his basement through the door in his back yard.

For days on end she sat on the small pile of blankets and waited to see if he was going to let her out or even give her some food. She noticed a light come on and it lighted up a small spot in her cell. She was afraid, but she was also starving and she hoped he came bearing food.

A man she vaguely remembered walked into the basement and started towards her cell. He was silent and he hadn’t come bearing food. She wondered what he was up to. He had ignored her for days, possibly weeks. There were several bottles of water in the cell and she had drunk then sparingly for two reasons. One she didn’t want them to run out and two, well she would have to go to the bathroom and all he had left her was a bucket to use. It was full now and overflowing on the floor on the opposite side of the small cell.

She stared at him mutely. She didn’t want to say anything, but she wondered what he planned on doing to her.

Suddenly he grabbed his chest and fell to the floor just outside her cell door. He didn’t move or make a sound. She watched him for hours and just sat there quietly.

Days passed and he didn’t move. She was sure by now he was dead. The rats were coming to chew on the body and the smell became over-powering. Now what was going to happen to her? There was no more water and no other indication that there was someone else in the house.

She eventually just laid down on the pile of blankets. The rats were almost done with her captor and they were coming for her now. Each time she looked up they were a little bit closer. She thought about her family and knew they had missed her. Will her body ever be found she wondered. Not long now she thought as she drifted off into a slow death.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Feb. 6, 2021

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “flag.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Flag and Drum Squad

Non-Fiction by Tessa Dean February 2021

“Oh mom, can I join the flag squad,” my twelve-year-old daughter, Kitty pleaded. “It will be so much fun and we get to go in parades too.”

“I don’t know Kitty. You have joined so many things just to quit in the first week or so.”

“I won’t Mom, I promise.”

Against my better judgement I allowed her to join the squad with her friends. She was in the squad long enough to get the uniform and then sure enough came the complaints. She didn’t want to practice and she didn’t feel like marching on parade day. Another failure in a long line of them. I did force her to continue for a while, but it didn’t make sense to spend my time dragging her to things she didn’t want to do. My husband didn’t agree with me on letting her quit, but when I told him that if she continues then he would be the one dragging a crying, complaining, pain in the neck kid to practice and parades. He changed his mind real quick.

Thomas had told Ginny that today was going to be her welcome home dinner that they had to postpone in the beginning. He had been looking forward to it all day. Although he had to beg Ginny to allow him to bring her the dinner because she had finally started back to school and was worn out.

He pulled into the restaurant that his mom worked at, La Petite Maison de Cuisine, and started inside to pick up his order. His phone rang and it was his mom. “Thomas, I am so sorry, I put your order in my pocket and then forgot to give it to the chef. It is going to be late. I am so sorry.”

“Ma! Are you kidding me? It is already 9:00 PM and how long do you expect it to take to put the order together? I told Ginny I would be there no later than 9:15 PM. She still gets tired easily and she was already grumbling about being tired when I left to come pick up the meal. You were supposed to have it packed and ready to go.”

“Listen Thomas, I am sorry, but I am exhausted myself. I work 30 hours per week and have 12 kids to take care of all day. I forgot. I am sorry. I am sure Ginny will understand. She is a sweet girl. Just tell her that your mom forgot and that I apologize. She will be fine. The chef is just finishing up cooking it and then I will pack it up for you. You won’t be that late, relax.”

“Sorry Ma, I know you work hard for all of us. I am on my way in now.”

The Birthday Party Part 26 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10Part 11Part 12Part 13Part 14Part 15Part 16Part 17Part 18Part 19Part 20Part 21Part 22Part 23Part 24, Part 25)

As Ginny climbed into his vehicle the nurse leaned in and suggested she take it easy the first few days and slowly build up her strength. The surgery had been hard enough on her, but recovering from the infection of the burst appendix had made it much worse.

Ginny didn’t argue with her because she was still feeling tired and resting would definitely help her get back to school earlier. She was scheduled to go back on Monday, but perhaps she might have to wait another week to rest up so she felt up to going back to school full time.

On the ride home Ginny didn’t say much. She didn’t feel much like talking right then. Getting dressed was hard even though she had help. She glanced at the clock on the dashboard and then closed her eyes since she had a half hour ride home. She knew that Thomas had planned a special meal for her and she wanted to enjoy it, but she was just so tired.

After a few minutes of driving Thomas asked her if she felt up to the meal or should he cancel it till she was feeling stronger? Ginny didn’t answer right away as she thought about it. She didn’t want to disappoint Thomas, but she was exhausted. The surgery and infection treatment had taken a lot out of her.

“Thomas would you be very disappointed if I asked you to wait, maybe a few more days. I think the first few days home will be quite a challenge. I don’t even have anyone to support me as my mom is so sick herself. Her nurses most likely are not going to take me on as well. I am on my own and no you know you won’t be able to help me. We aren’t married yet and so you can’t help me dress and bathe. You do understand my meaning right? We made a decision to wait until we were married before getting intimate. They may have just been words to you, but to me it means something.”

Thomas took his eyes briefly off the road to grab her hand and squeeze it. “You mean everything to me and that was a decision we made together and it means a lot to me that you would accept my decision to remain celibate until I am married. It is a part of my faith and has a lot of meaning in my religious beliefs. I love you Ginny and I thank you so much for agreeing to wait for me.”

“Thomas! Watch out for the other cars on the road. You just missed that last one while you were looking at me. Let’s get home in one piece please. Do you think we can just get some regular take-out for dinner tonight and save the special dinner? There will be many other dinners as we grow old together. I love you too, but please keep your eyes on the road from now on.”

The nurse had called around noon and told Thomas he could come pick Ginny up from the hospital around 2:00 PM. She suggested he park and come upstairs first because Ginny had a lot of belongings still to be packed up and taken home with her. Then he could go down and load up the car and bring it around to the front entrance where she would be wheeled down in a wheelchair for pick up.

Thomas hoped Ginny wouldn’t be too tired for their celebration. Maybe he should have put the order in to the restaurant for earlier, but he didn’t know what time she was coming home and besides he needed Rory to bring the order to them. He knew the restaurant could prepare it earlier, but he wasn’t sure if Rory would be available before 9:00 PM which was the time they agreed upon. He was working tonight at the restaurant with their mother and he didn’t get done until 8:30 he remembered Rory telling him.

At least the weather was cooperating. It was only raining outside and not the original snow storm they had predicted.
