Reena’s Xploration Challenge #173

Reena’s Xploration Challenge #173

PROMPT #173

We have a one-word prompt this week.

FLOW

Flow is a state of mind where one is fully immersed in the task involved, and delivers a lot with minimum effort.

Flow is a software by Microsoft, which facilitates team functioning.

Flow is poetic, as in the flow of words, water, winds – taking something from one place to another.

All you need to do is just ‘flow’ with your creativity.

**********

When I think of flow I think of blood flowing through our bodies and giving us life. And the other thing that popped into my head is that flow can turn into flower and all the beautiful flowers there are in this world. I know that second one is just a spelling change, but it did flow into my brain LOL!

The Birthday Party Part 42 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10Part 11Part 12Part 13Part 14Part 15Part 16Part 17Part 18Part 19Part 20Part 21Part 22Part 23Part 24Part 25Part 26Part 27Part 28Part 29Part 30Part 31Part 32Part 33Part 34Part 35Part 36Part 37Part 38Part 39Part 40, Part 41)

The lawyer, Mr. Zimmerman, had them all sit down around his desk as he closed the door to his office. He asked if they were comfortable or would they care for some coffee, tea or water? Mr. Zimmerman noticed what a wisp of a girl Ginny had become as the years took their toll on her mother and her. Life hadn’t been easy for the young girl with no kin except for the one aunt who seemed disinterested in her. He noticed her clinging to the young man’s hand as if afraid he would disappear on her as well.

Ginny’s skin was pale as if she hadn’t seen sunlight in years and for all he knew, she hadn’t. They appear as close as lover’s although her mother said she pledged to her to remain a virgin until she married. There was definitely a deep bond between them though She seemed to need his touch to keep her upright. Her expression was inquisitive, but she seemed to steel herself for reality. From her comments he understood her to believe she was not going to inherit anything but debt from her mother’s death.

By default the debt is usually passed down to the children upon a parent’s death. She didn’t know it yet, but she had cheated the tax man. Confusing as this was going to be for her to understand, the impossible wedding she was so carefully planning, was about to become the wedding of her dreams.

The lawyer watched the two of them for a while. It was refreshing to see two people who almost seemed to be one person in thought and deed. They were so easy with each other and he so tenderly took control of her whole soul and being as if they were indeed one person.

Now it was time to start the explanations. To bring joy to someone who is so lost in her loss of her only parent and at such a young age. There are no explanations as to why her mother, Caroline, was taken from this earth so early. Ginny will never understand that, but he had long hoped to be her father and he would have been if fate hadn’t stepped in and taken Caroline’s memory in the first stroke and there was no way that he could enter into the bond of matrimony with his beloved since she didn’t understand what was happening to her. Her memories were infrequent and she remembered him at times and not at other times. When she was lucid he would come spend time with her and deal with the legal end of things so Ginny was taken care of. He wished he had been there for the final stroke and the ending of her life here on earth. He wished he could hug Ginny now and console her with memories that he had of her mother and her life before that first stroke and maybe someday that would happen, but for now he must be the lawyer and take care of getting her situated legally and get her through the burial of her beloved mother.

Ginny was such a wisp of a girl. She was under five feet and weighed less than 80 pounds soaking wet, they would tease her. Thomas loved to hug her and just hold her, the touch was soothing to them both.

Thomas felt so bad for her. She already knew that her mother probably wouldn’t have made it to their wedding, but she refused to let it cheat her out of enjoying planning the wedding. She would talk to her mother and keep her updated and they talked about what kind of dress she would wear as mother of the bride. Ginny’s mother couldn’t remember much because of the damage from the first stroke and Ginny always talked to her as if it was a brand new subject. To her mother, it was.

Thomas didn’t know what would happen now. First things first, they would have to plan a funeral and that was going to be tough for his little sweetheart. She was almost completely alone in the world except for him and his family. Her mother had a sister, but they never saw her. Ginny had already called her and the woman had already backed out of the funeral. There wasn’t even a date set yet.

His Mom and Dad had already invited her to stay with them and sleep on the couch so she wouldn’t be alone during this time. She called out of work and notified the school she had to take time off.

Now they were waiting out side of the lawyers office, the sign read, Benjamin Zimmerman, Esquire. Ginny squeezed his hand and he squeezed hers back. She seemed calm, no sign of tears at the moment. The receptionist had asked them to be seated outside in the waiting area until Mr. Zimmerman was ready for them.

The door opened and the man she remembered seeing with her mother came out and motioned them to come in. “Miss Carpenter, I am Benjamin Zimmerman and I was your mother’s lawyer, employer and for as long as possible her fiancé. To me she is still my fiancée, but she didn’t remember a whole lot at the end so I didn’t push it. What I have to say is private, but if you wish to have this gentleman present you may, of course.”

“Mr. Zimmerman, this is Thomas Banks, my fiancé and I would like him present please. We were planning our wedding when my mother passed away. She may not have told you since she couldn’t remember it herself. I was constantly going over the wedding plans with her in the hopes she would retain some of it, but she never did. I think she realized I was getting married and she realized she would be alone except for the 24 hour nurses and had just requested that I see about a long term care facility for her. I was wondering how she would pay for that because the nursing care was from what I could tell, starting to drain her bank account, although she told me not to worry about that because you were taking care of things. She remembered the oddest things.”

“Yes, Ms. Carpenter or may I call you Ginny?”

“Ginny please, Mr. Zimmerman.”

“Ok, Ginny, you are about to be surprised. In a good way so please don’t look alarmed.”

Ginny tried to calm herself down. Her whole life had just been pulled out from under her and she was having a hard time dealing with it all. “I’m sorry, Mr. Zimmerman, but I am really terrified right now and I have no idea what to do or how to do it and worst of all how to pay for it.”

“Ok, first of all Ginny, you are not alone. I will be with you the whole way. This was a request from your mother and in writing before she lost that ability of her functionality. She still knew me at the end and we always had the nurse in there as a witness and she signed all documents as a witness. So there shouldn’t be any legal problems with your mother’s wishes. I do understand that your father removed himself from your lives before you were born. If he hears about her passing and that she wasn’t as poor as he thought, he might come sniffing around. Whatever you do, do not speak to him. Refer him to me. I will deal with him. He didn’t respond to her repeated requests for a divorce so we went the legal way and had the divorce become legal. He may try to get around you and convince you otherwise, but don’t listen to him or give him any money. I mean it, he has no rights here so don’t let him badger you. Let me know and I will have him taken care of.”

“But she was poor, we lived very cheaply and she was paying a lot for those nurses I am sure.”

“Ginny, I am going to explain the whole situation to you in a moment. Just know that you are going to be well taken care of.”

I love cupcakes which is silly considering that I eat them with a fork or spoon and a knife.

PS These are my favorite: all vanilla (with or without the sprinkles).

Ginny remained in Thomas’s embrace, her eyes closed, tears coursing down her cheeks. She thought planning the wedding was confusing enough without her mother’s help. She had to rely on Thomas’s family, who had taken her under their wing. They knew she was worried about her mother and the toll her illness was taking on her, although she never complained. She just did what needed to be done. Now it was over. She and Thomas had kept their promise to her mother and to the church and remained celibate and had not experimented with being lovers other than kissing and snuggling. She intended to keep that promise even though her mother was no longer here to guide her through life. She was completely on her own. Her father had abandoned her mother as soon as her heard she was pregnant. There was no child support and her mother had worked hard until the first stroke felled her and she couldn’t work anymore. She was a great lawyer according to Benjamin Zimmerman, the number one lawyer in NJ. She worked for him and was his number one lawyer on staff.

Ginny still occasionally sees Mr. Zimmerman, as he would come to see her mother quite often. She was just entering her teens when she realized that her mother was having a relationship with Mr. Zimmerman. He was a dapper man and quite handsome. He was older than her mother, but that didn’t seem to bother them.

“Miss Ginny,” the nurse came out of the room after her mother’s body had been taken away. “I have a list here that I was supposed to follow and then inform you. I called the doctor first of course, and then I put in a call to Mr. Zimmerman, her friend and lawyer. He says he has to talk to you. Your mother left something in his care and he needs to see you as soon as you feel up to come to see him in the office. He says he understands if you need a few days to digest all of this, but he needs to talk to you as soon as possible.”

“Thank you, Myra! I will call him tomorrow and set up an appointment. Maybe he can help me with the funeral arrangements or maybe that is what he has that my mother left in his care. I am a little lost right now.”

Thomas hugged her and she started to cry again.

Thomas stroked Ginny’s smooth skin tenderly trying to comfort her. Even though her mother had been very ill she was not prepared for her death so soon. Her mother had just started talking about moving to a long term care facility so she would be more comfortable. She knew that the daily stress on Ginny, who felt that she had to take care of her mother, plus go to school and work was making her restrict herself to home and not go out with Thomas and her friends. The upcoming wedding was also a problem. Ginny found it hard to make definite plans because her mother was not able to be an active participant in the planning or the actual wedding itself. And Ginny was worried that she wouldn’t be able to attend the wedding at all.

Now this! “How could this have happened?” she asked the doctor. “Was he sure it was a stroke?”

“Well,” the doctor said, “I am as sure as I can be. She was already suffering the effects of a serious stroke that left her bed-ridden and with 24 hour nursing care. I am going to say that the signs point to a massive stroke. The last one unfortunately. Before the major stroke there had been signs of mini-strokes which weren’t noticed. That one could have killed her but she survived with most of her faculties intact for the most part. Another, massive stroke is not unusual and this one happened to be fatal, my dear. I am truly sorry for your loss.” He briefly shook her hand and after conferring with the ambulance crew, he left.
