PROMPT #176

Our prompt this week has the potential to cover more than the written word. Think images, computer art, paints and brushes or a camera lens. Words are not going anywhere though, because that is what we are talking about.

If you are a book, what will the cover look like?

You are free to use any medium you like to describe.

Beach Party Part 16 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10Part 11Part 12Part 13Part 14, Part 15)

By Tessa Dean March 2021

Mrs. Jones arrived home quietly hoping the kids were asleep and she could just sneak in and up to her bedroom to get ready for bed. She knew Kimberley was on a date and would be coming in shortly before her. Cassie should have Janet’s precious little ones in bed and be doing her own thing by now. Peace, she was almost dreaming about it and the softness of her bed.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the situation that greeted her. Cassie entered the living room with tears streaming down her face and a crumpled tissue laid testament that she had been crying for quite a while. She didn’t see Kimberley or the babies so she hoped they were asleep or at least in bed.

“Cassie, what is wrong my love?” She put her arm around Cassie and hugged her close, brushing the tears away as best as she could. This must be bad, because Cassie was at the age where she didn’t talk to her mother much and Janet was worried about her. Usually Cassie would pull away if Janet tried to hug her.

“Oh Mommy, I had to break up with Peter today and he tried to punch me in the face again. His rage was out of control and if I didn’t have my friends on the sidelines hidden from his view he might very well have lost total control and hit me. I know he has always had a temper, but this rage is different. He goes into a trance almost and it is as if he doesn’t know what he is doing. I tried to do the adult thing and break up with him in person.”

Janet led Cassie to the couch and sat her down. She debated and then sat next to her and pulled her head down onto her shoulder while rubbing her back in an effort to comfort her. She didn’t know how to help her older daughter who seemed to never need help. Tonight was different. She was asking for help and allowing her mother to hug her. Janet wanted to be there for her. This thing with Peter was getting seriously dangerous to her precious daughter. She’d kill him herself if he laid a hand on her.

“Ok, tell me what happened, Cassie.”

“I called him up and told him we had to talk and to meet me at the beach in Cove Bay, our usual spot. Then I called all of my other friends in the group and asked them to come and stand behind the dunes as I was actually terrified he might try to hit me again. He arrived all jolly and goofy as if he knew all along I had been kidding with him. He assumed I wanted to get back together. When I told him no I was officially breaking up with him, that glazed look came into his eyes and he balled up his fist ready to punch me. I screamed no and he sort of lost the glazed look and of course my friends came out immediately and grabbed a hold of him and asking him what was he doing. He scares me. I told him it was over, done, we were through, and then I left with my friends. Mom, I am afraid he will try something else. What if he doesn’t accept that we’re through and tries to interfere in my life?’

“You two were always so close growing up. Do you really feel he would do something to hurt you?”

“Mom you didn’t see his face, the look, the glazed look that comes over his face just before he tries to punch me. It is nothing I have ever seen before and Mom what if he finds out I am dating someone else? I didn’t tell you yet since I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but I met a guy at the restaurant. He is older than all of us, but he appears to be a decent guy and he told he he would like to take me out if I didn’t have a boyfriend. I told him about Peter and what he had done to me and he asked me if that is what I wanted out of life. I told him, of course not. I have plans and want a man who is responsible and wants the same thing out of life as I do. He said he won’t hound me or ask again. I have his number and if I lose the boyfriend to call him and we will go on a real date this Sunday. The day I don’t work.”

“Oh Cassie, are you thinking about doing it? I worry, as your mother, of course, but I want you to be happy also. I know Peter is childish and from the look of things planning on staying that way.”

“I want to, Mom. He is even wiling to let me choose the restaurant including the one I work at if it will make me feel better and he would take me to the movies. A real date! I want to see where this goes. He is gorgeous. He has bright blue eyes and a shaved head. I loved the bald look on him. I don’t know his age, but he was all dressed up like he came from work and definitely mature as opposed to what I dealt with when Peter and I were together. He actually talked me through a rough patch with a nasty customer. I want to try this Mom. I want to see what a real date is like and what a man and not a child is like. Peter is never going to grow up I seriously doubt, so this is a chance to see what life with an adult is like.”

“Well Cassie you are 19 so no drinking and well you know about the sex talk, etc. I won’t ask you to do anything except make sure it is what you want and that you are protected. You are an adult now and so I can’t really say no, but I can warn you to be careful.”

“I will Mom, I promise. This is what I want. Just remember it is this Sunday and if you decide to work make sure Kimberley or a sitter is available. Thanks, Mom for understanding.”

Beach Party Part 15 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6Part 7Part 8Part 9Part 10Part 11Part 12Part 13, Part 14)

By Tessa Dean March 2021

Cassie was still shaking from her encounter with Peter. She thought doing the adult thing and telling him about the breakup in person was the right thing to do, but after that encounter she wasn’t sure anymore. Thankfully she had the hindsight of asking her friends to be there, although they were hidden. Peter had no idea he was being watched. She didn’t trust him not to hurt her anymore. Safely escorted by her friends, she headed home to talk to her mom. She really thought it was a miracle that he hadn’t hurt her. This was not the Peter she grew up with. She knew he had a temper, but he mainly kept it in check.

After saying good bye to her friends at her door, she headed inside and to her bedroom that she shared with Kimberley. Kimberley was out on a date and so she had the room to herself to reflect deeply on what had just happened. Peter was so enraged, he was definitely about to punch her. He seemed to go into a trance and not know what he was doing. Seeing it so up close was scary. How many other people had he done this too. She knew his temper was getting worse.

Her mother wasn’t home from work yet so she had to wait for her before they could talk. Her mother had no idea what was going on. She thought she was not dating Peter simply because he wouldn’t get a job. She would be very angry when she found out he had almost hit her again.

She went to the kitchen and got a full glass of soda and told Lauren, the babysitter she had hired for her conversation with Peter, that she could go. She wasn’t going out again. She paid her and took the full glass of soda back to her bedroom.

She still had to call Wayne as well. She definitely wanted to get to know him and was excited that he had planned a real date. She would have money with her just in case something came up and she had to pay her share of the date, but she felt that he was the kind of man who would take her on a date and actually pay for it. He was not a teenager anymore. She wondered just how old he actually was. They had a lot of talking to do.

She was only 19 and so a bar was out of the question. He said where they went would be her choice. She didn’t mind eating at the restaurant she worked at. It would be kind of fun to have her friends wait on her for a change.

Her phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID she could see it was Ronnie. Ronnie and the others would be checking up on her to make sure she was ok and that Peter didn’t come to her house. She answered the phone and stretched out on her bed. They talked for a little while and then she heard the front door. She told Ronnie she had to go and to let the others know she was fine and had to talk to her mother now. She hung up and braced herself for the ordeal to come.
