Cassie made a wish before dialing Wayne’s number. She couldn’t deny that she worried that he would answer the phone with displeasure if he knew it was her. She guessed about their age difference. She hoped he hadn’t been born too long before her. She didn’t know if he realized she was just a high school senior and not just a working girl . She looked a lot older than she was. She was pretty sure he was at least 5 years older than her since she believed he was employed and not in school.

A deep voice answered the phone, “Hello?”

“Uh, hi Wayne, it is me, Cassie, from the restaurant the other night. You told me to call if I wanted to go out on that date on Sunday and if I had lost the boyfriend.”

“I remember you Cassie and did you lose that boyfriend?”

“Yes, Wayne, I lost the boyfriend although it was an unpleasant experience to say the least. By a sheer miracle I missed out on another one of his well-aimed punches. I had my friends with me to make sure the break-up got done and that he didn’t hurt me doing it. I just told my family about it tonight, well my mom and my sister. My sister thinks the whole thing is dotty and laughed at me, but my Mom was really upset. She doesn’t like the thought that any of her precious children might get hurt. She agreed to stay on the sidelines and let me handle it for now.”

“So did the boyfriend do penance for his wild hands or did you just tell him it was over and leave?”

“He looked like I had punched him full in the face judging by his expression. He actually is tiny when you compare him to most guys. He is shorter than me even.”

“Well Cassie, I remember the softness of your blonde hair, pulled back into a bouncy ponytail. I really like blondes. Is yours natural or did you acquire it out of a bottle?”

“Wayne, my hair is natural. I am not a bottle blonde. And look who’s talking. What color is the hair you shave off? You are completely bald so I couldn’t tell what color you hair might be although with those beautiful blue eyes I think black hair would be perfect.”

“You will never see me with my actual hair color. I keep it shaved every day so it doesn’t have a chance to grow back in.”

“Never,” Cassie says wonderingly. “Why don’t you let it grow?”

“Let’s just say I prefer to keep it bald and leave it at that.”

“Can I ask how old you are? My friends are worried that you won’t want to try and fit into our group and I can see why. You are obviously older than me, and we are all high school seniors.”

“Cassie, I am sorry darling, but I am not interested in a bunch of high school seniors. I am interested in you only. Don’t be thinking we are going to be hanging around your friends like you do now. I have friends that are much older than you guys and I expect you to be mature like I found you the other night. You seemed mature and you had goals. If you can accept that you will have new friends than maybe this can work, but if you expect me to hang around a bunch of high schoolers than we might as well stop now. I am 25 years old now and keep that in mind.”

“But you haven’t even met them, how do you know that you won’t like them? All I ask is that you meet them.”

“Cassie, I am serious, I am not going to meet your friends and I will expect you to be part of my life when you aren’t working.”

“But Wayne, I also have to babysit my little brothers and sister when I’m not working. My sister and I have to trade days so we both get some time to ourselves.”

“I guess you had better think about this some more. I am not looking for a child, but a real woman. Remember that!”

    1. Sorry about the boyfriend. I am about to take this darker. I have a piece I wrote for Sadje’s “What do you See?” and I have been told to work it in somewhere. I will have to change some details of it, but it gave me an idea for this guy. The one who appears to Cassie as the answer to her problems and is only the beginning of them.
