Thanks to Natalie the Explorer for hosting this prompt.

I was wondering if anyone was hosting the coffee share or not. I just happened to come across it on another blog I was reading.

7 weeks ago I broke my foot. I am 64 years old and disabled so this made it necessary that I had to go to a rehab hospital. The place was terrible and I am trying to decide whether to report them to the state. Everyone is encouraging me to do it. There was definite neglect and mistreatment of the patients (including me) and a lot of them were older people who did not have their faculties about them. I did and so they couldn’t pull that stuff off without me noticing and telling people what was going on. It was limited mainly to the one section of the hospital which was the 2 week quarantine area for Covid. I was moved at two and a half weeks to the main rehab section and except for a few things it was considerably better and I was able to build up a rapport with my aides and nurses.

I was there almost 7 weeks. Just got home the other day, but still having difficulty with a lot of things and although I have a walking boot, walking is still difficult. I hope to have it off soon, but that will depend on how well it is healing. My appointment is on June 7 with the orthopedic doctor who examined me. He said it should take only 6 weeks to heal. I hope he is right. Other people have told me other stories of how it took them longer.

For those of you who do not know, I am a writer. Besides blogging I write short stories, poetry and my first novel is at the point it is almost ready for professional editing. My one novel suddenly became a series and not being able to write while in the hospital since I am not great with my iPhone, really upset me. I had to put off my editing since I wasn’t ready and had made some changes to the story itself and still have to finish them, but since my editor was sick and in the hospital the same time as me, she’s not ready to edit it anyhow so I have time to work on it. The other thing that bothered me was that I ended up missing NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month – April Edition). I was going to finish book one and then start on book two. I am not going to publish these either traditionally or Indie. I am going to publish them on my blog. I currently have a section of my memoir on there and the link is below to that.

I am an avid youtuber in the authortube section on writing (see link below to my channel). I make videos and I run live streams where we do timed writing sprints and I am the host of the one connected to my channel. I really missed them while I was in the hospital. I have to restart them and might do one tonight to get back into the groove.

The other big thing in my life right now is that I am looking for an assisted living facility. I can’t live alone anymore and I don’t want to go to a nursing home. Assisted Living is in-between and I will still have some freedom although I might have a roommate. It won’t be fancy as it will be paid for by Medicaid which is state run and so nothing fancy. Can’t afford to move to one otherwise since I live on a small Social Security Disability check. The aide that Medicaid was providing for me quit while I was in the hospital and so I don’t have any help at all right now. The aide cleaned, did some light cooking, did laundry, shopped, bathed and dressed me. I am currently on my own right now. Aides are hard to find due to Covid 19.

Last night one of my daughters brought me a meal for Mother’s Day. She brought all three of her children ranging in age from 23 years, 14 years and a 1 year old. I haven’t seen the youngest grow up. We went into lockdown a couple of months after he was born. I saw him born and then just pictures of him mainly. Yesterday he was running around here. He has large bright blue eyes. Blue eyes are not very common in my family.

  1. Welcome back to Weekend Coffee Share, Tessa. I hope your foot heals well.

Just want to mention that at the top of your blog post, where it reads “Thanks to Natalie the Explorerhttps://natalietheexplorer.home.blog/link-up/ for hosting this prompt.”, the first half of the link went to Alli’s web site and gave an error message. If you correct it to link to my blog post, it should do a pingback. Thank you.

    1. Thanks Natalie. I didn’t realize it. I will fix it. Yeah I didn’t realize it had been taken over by someone else so I was glad to see it on Trent’s blog and could find you through him. I will go see about fixing that link problem.

    1. Thanks! I am glad too. That was a horrendous experience although my foot hurts right now and my body is so deconditioned since I laid in bed for almost 7 weeks. My first day home and it was like doing exercise after none for years. My whole body hurts, not just my foot. Granted my body usually hurts, but this is worse. I have so much to catch up on. The mail piled up and I missed so many dr appointments. I have no aide at the moment so if I make a mess it pretty much stays that way. I hope the dr lets me take this boot off on June 7th. That is 6 weeks and he said it should take 6 weeks.

  2. I feel for you and the other patients in the rehab hospital about the neglect and mistreatment on the quarantine unit. I am glad your experience with the main unit was better.

I definitely understand your feelings about needing to find an assisted living facility. I am in a care home and thankfully, I do have my own room and actually my own bathroom too. This is in the Netherlands though and within developmental disability services. Nursing homes for the elderly still have rooms for two, although that’s changing here. I can understand you don’t want to go into an actual nursing home, so I hope you find a place within assisted living soon.

I’ll be checking out your YouTube channel. It sounds cool.

    1. Thank you Astrid. I hope you like my You Tube channel. I do the live streams if you happen to write although writing is not a requirement. Sometimes people read or do housework because they like the camaraderie and timed work times. My care manager said that some places do have single rooms or even small apartments although most paid for by the government are 2 to a unit. So you share a bathroom and I don’t know if it is like a nursing home with just a curtain to separate it although we have to bring our own furniture so I hope there are at least walls between the rooms and just a shared bath and possibly kitchenette. Most places provide meals in a main dining room. I just have to wait to see what is available.

  3. Hello, hoping your foot heals up quickly and you are able to find a great Assisted living facility. I’m so sorry about your terrible experience at the rehab and I would agree, that reporting them is what should be done. you need to be an advocate for yourself and others. My mother in law had to do this when she experienced some situations when visiting a friend at an assisted living/nursing home facility.

    1. Thank you Kirstin. We just expanded the search area for the assisted living facility. Hopefully that might help speed things up. I still haven’t found an aide though. There aren’t many available due to the pandemic. So many of them quit working in that field. I am all alone here and it is a struggle, especially getting dressed. I am still thinking about the rehab situation. Several people have warned me about them. However I know my sister is constantly fighting with my dad’s nursing home. Very conflicted.
