Idyllic Spot

by Teresa Smeigh May 2020

Caroline stared wistfully at the lovely painted bridge she had just crossed over. She had never been here before, and she would have thought she was in the wrong spot if Robert hadn’t mentioned the lovely red bridge crossing over the stream and leading to a lush wooded spot.

She stared at the lovely, colorful butterflies flitting around the flowers and bushes. Occasionally a pretty hummingbird would enter the area and fly around. The stream sparkled and glittered with the occasional sunshine that made it through the dense area surrounding this open spot.

She wondered why they were here. Usually, they went to more secluded spots. She assumed that they were going to talk. She always hated it when Robert would want to have a conversation as they usually had to do with their relationship, and she knew it was not supposed to be a long term affair. He had been looking for someone to see outside his marriage, and sometimes things got a little uncomfortable for him, and they had to talk about it. She wondered what she had done this time.

He was late, and she was getting tired of standing. She looked for somewhere to sit, but other than the lush green grass, there wasn’t anywhere to sit. So she gingerly sat down and tried to pull her skirt up so she could bend her legs to sit on the grass.

She had been seeing Robert for over five years now, and she never expected this relationship to last that long. He knew she was looking for more than a casual fling, but so far, she hadn’t tried to force the issue. He made himself clear that he had no intention of leaving his wife. She had agreed to that and tried not to let it bother her. She had made the mistake of falling in love with a man she knew wasn’t looking for love, just a fling. That wasn’t his fault. She could only blame herself.

Caroline heard the lilting sound of voices coming closer. She was about to have company, but it wouldn’t be Robert as he came alone unless he ran into someone on the path coming in here. Her car was in the parking lot, and it was a slightly longer hike than normal. Anxiously she watched the opening to the bridge.

Much to her surprise, it was Robert, and he was with a woman. Watching them cross the red bridge, she thought she saw a resemblance to his wife in the woman’s face. She had seen pictures of her. Surely he wouldn’t have brought his wife along.

She stood up and waited for them to approach where she was standing. She didn’t move to greet them.

“Caroline,” Robert began and stopped. He looked very uncomfortable, and she could imagine he was.

The woman was watching her carefully, saying nothing at first, but her expression said she wasn’t happy. “Robert, let’s get this over with, I have to get back to work. I have no idea what you were thinking, but this ends here or else.”

“Caroline, I’m sorry, she caught me leaving this morning as she came home to get something she forgot for work. I didn’t plan for this to happen. She found your birthday present, and it was kind of obvious since it is not her birthday yet, not to mention that the present wouldn’t suit her. Samantha wouldn’t be caught dead in sexy lingerie, and I have never bought her any.”

Samantha opened her tote bag and tossed a sexy teddy at Caroline, smacking her in the face with it. Next came the birthday card addressed to Caroline. Caroline ducked this time and backed up.

“I don’t know what you think you are doing with someone else’s husband, but it won’t be mine. If I find out he’s been sniffing around you again, I will kill you both, and I am not kidding. My daddy won’t put up with this kind of thing. Robert is mine, or he’s history, and if it is you he is with, you are history too. Do you understand me? Speak up, girl. I can’t hear you.”

“Yes, ma’am, and I’m so sorry. I will never set my eyes on him again.” Caroline picked up her purse and left, practically running across the red bridge.

A True Funny Story – My Hair Appointment

My hair appointment with my stylist was Friday and since she is so popular I had to wait three weeks for this appointment. So yesterday, just before my appointment, I was talking to my neighbor about how long I had been waiting for this appointment and my hair was so shaggy and long. So I said to him “Come Hell or high water” I was going to this appointment and I already had one problem since my walker wheel had come off and I was struggling with the old aluminum one I had, but I was going to get my hair done, dammit!

  1. Barely moments after I said this there was a tremendously loud crash of thunder and a huge lightning bolt hit very close. I had rarely heard thunder that loud and so I guess the storm was right on top of us and then another neighbor comes running down the hall.
  2. She goes that lightning bolt split the big tree in front of her apartment (we’re on the 6th floor which happened to be a good thing) as the tree split in half and fell across towards the front entrance. I glanced over to the first neighbor and was speechless. That wasn’t the end.
  3. Next thing you know the lightning hit the building and knocked out the electricity which accomplished two things.
  4. One, the fire alarms started screeching and those suckers are loud and I am hard of hearing so I can only imagine how people who can hear must have felt and….
  5. Two, when the fire alarms go off the elevators shut down for a fire.
  6. My neighbor hands me my phone and says, “Make the call, you aren’t going anywhere!”

I don’t know if we had high water, but we sure had Hell. The divine guy upstairs wasn’t amused at what I said I guess.

And even if was crazy enough to go out in that weather, I can’t walk down 5 flights of stairs to the bottom floor with a walker and if I didn’t get struck by the crazy lightning if I could get out of the door, my windshield wipers on my car do not work thus I wouldn’t have been able to see to drive.

Needless to say, someone was determined I was going to keep this mop of hair for now.

Something’s Missing

Written by Tessa Dean August 2021

Alan tiptoed down the stairs Christmas morning before dawn. He had dropped one of his daughter, Dawn’s, gifts on the trip downstairs to lay them under the tree. She was named Dawn since she had been born at Dawn on Christmas Day and so today was also her birthday. She had asked for a jump rope for Christmas when hers broke last week. They had made a mad dash to find her the sparkliest rope they could find and then he drops it on the way down the stairs. Such a dolt. She was only five years old and Santa meant a lot to her.

Glancing over at the front door he realized it was open and he could hear Scamp barking. What’s he doing outside and how did he get there. He couldn’t open the door himself. Alan shoved the wrapped jump rope behind the gifts and dashed to the door and outside while the frost was still covering the grass and there was his daughter Dawn skipping up and down the walk. Trying not to scare her he turned on the light and went outside.

“Dawn what are you doing out here. And where’s your coat?”

“Waiting for Santa, Daddy, he forgot my new jump rope.” How did she know that unless she had been snooping through the gifts?

“Dawn come inside immediately. Santa probably forgot it and is on his way back here, but he won’t stop if you are outside. Now come on back inside and into bed. It is way too early for you to be up yet.”

Pouting Dawn followed him back inside, up the stairs, and got back into bed where he tucked her in again. “Wait a little longer and I’m sure Santa will find the rope and return to drop it off. Now go back to sleep and stay in bed until Mommy and I get up.”

Dawn settled down and closed her eyes. He left the room and watched outside for while to see if she came back out. Finally he went to bed again.

“It’s here, it’s here,” Dawn was shouting. So much for staying in bed until we got up, he thought, but she must have found the rope.

“Dawn,” he tried to remain stern while his excited daughter was holding the rope in her hands, “I thought I told you to wait until we got up.”

“I know, but I just had to see if Santa remembered and brought me a new jump rope. Alan ruffled her hair and hugged her tight.

For visually challenged writers, the image shows a flower-strewn cliff-top above the sea, where a rocky outcrop, seemingly shaped into many forms and faces, looks out over the waves.

Hide and Seek

by Teresa Smeigh May 2020

“This is boring,” Carl said, wiping the sweat off of his face with his shirt.

“Oh, Carl, you are always bored. What do you want to do?” Susie said, also wiping the sweat onto the bottom of her shirt. “I am tired of coming up with ideas on what to do. You choose today.”

“Let’s head down to the sea wall. Lots of places to hide, and we can play hide and seek. I’ll even let you hide first.”

“I don’t know, my parents have always stressed that it was too dangerous down there to play.”

“Oh, Susie, you are so boring. I play down there all the time.”

“I don’t know…”

“Come on, please.”

“OK, but don’t tell anyone. I don’t want to get in trouble.”

They start walking towards the sea. Upon arrival, they both start to climb to the top of the sea wall, and Susie looks around. The area was pretty, and she saw lots of rocks and things that she could hide behind.

As Carl begins counting to 100, Susie heads to the rocky area and spots a large rock to hide behind. She was pretty close to the edge, and when Carl hit 100 and started to look around, she was afraid he might see her and started to back up, not noticing she was approaching the edge of the cliff they were on.

Her foot started to slip on the sandy surface, and she let out a scream, catching Carl’s attention. He races to her and grabs her arm just as she slipped off the edge and was dangling there.

“Give me your other arm and stop struggling,” Carl urgently pleads with her.

She tried to calm herself down and gave Carl her other arm, and he slowly dragged her up the side of the cliff and back onto firm ground. He was shaking and couldn’t talk. He just hugged her tightly until their shaking subsided.

“Thank you, Carl. Oh my God,” she practically stutters. She was still shaken and started to cry.

“Susie, I am so sorry. I didn’t think this was a dangerous place to play. I should have listened to you. I will never come here again. I don’t think I will ever forget how close you came to falling off that cliff.”

Carl puts his arm around her, and they head towards home and away from the sea.

The Shimmering Globe

Written by Tessa Dean August 2021

I walked across my parents front yard as the moon shimmered brightly on the globe that set atop a stand. The night was dark except for the glow of the moon directly on the globe. I put my hands out to rub it across the globe and the smoothness that was usually there was missing. I cut my hand on something sharp. The moonlight was too dim to see what happened, but I felt a sharp pain.

I hurried inside to check out my hand and was surprised to find a large cut across my palm that was bleeding profusely. I headed to the bathroom to clean the cut and bandage it before getting a flashlight and heading out to the globe to see what had cut my hand. I was astonished to find the globe was almost upside down and the base of it was shattered causing me to cut my hand. I took it into the house to examine it, but I couldn’t find a reason for the globe to still be intact when it had been partially shattered. Why didn’t the whole thing just disintegrate into hundreds of little pieces. And more to the point, what had caused it to shatter? I set it on the table to show my parents in the morning. I know my mom loved that globe and it would be hard to replace.

SHARE YOUR WORLD 8-23-2021

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is sywvaccine.jpg

Welcome to Share Your World!

I will post four or five different questions each week for you to answer.  Additionally, I offer a ‘Gratitude’ Section for those who like a little affirmation with their questions!  It’s optional to participate in that of course.

There are two ways in which you can participate:

  1. Create a Share Your World post.
  2. Then post the link to that blog post.
  3. Alternatively, leave your answers in the comments box of this post.
  4. To make it easy for others to check out your post, title your blog post “Share Your World”  and link it to this post.
  5. Ping-backs are activated, but how efficiently varies.  I don’t manually approve them, but sometimes they don’t show up immediately.  Why that happens is an unsolved mystery.   For instructions on how ping-backs work, in case you weren’t certain, please click here.  You may wish to leave a link to your blog post in the comments just to be sure.  Thanks!
  6. Some questions might be recycled from time to time.  Sorry if they come too close together!  The number of interesting questions (to me) is finite.   I try to mix them up judiciously but bungle that sometimes.  Mea culpa!

QUESTIONS      (a random bag today)

Can you parallel park (if you drive)? Yes occasionally. It really depends on the area and how much room is available. I hate to do it though.  If you don’t drive, can you still skip? Can’t skip and that is obvious since when I broke my foot I couldn’t do crutches and had to go to a rehab until I got a walking boot.

Do you prefer early morning or late evening?  Or something in between? I prefer the middle of the night. I am a night owl.

Do you like avocados? NOOOOOOOOO!

Is mind or matter more real? I guess it depends although I would say matter is more tangible than mind.

and a bonus ‘deep’ question just because

Are people in this current generation less or more sensitive than people from past generations? Less sensitive and more “me me me.”
