“Shhh! It’s your turn now!” Charlie laughed and turned to Roger. “Let’s see you beat that,” Charlie teases his brother Roger. Ten-year-old Roger is unsure exactly how to make hand shadow puppets. He has watched 18 year old Charlie do it repeatedly, but he never quite got the hang of it.

Roger turns on the light and faces it to the wall like he had seen Charlie do. He placed his hand between the wall and the light, and a shadow appears, but it isn’t an animal or anything recognizable. “Charlie, come on and teach me how you do it. Your animals are so real, and I get lumps of unrecognizable blobs on the wall.”

Charlie gets out his laptop and looks up the chart where he first learned to make the shadow puppets. “Here, it shows you just how to hold your hands to make any of these animals.” He left Roger alone to practice. He didn’t tell him that it took him many months of constant practice before he got the animals to look like real animals. Charlie took off chuckling at his kid brother.

The Pond

by Tessa Dean August 2021

“Benjy, no!” I screamed as my puppy headed onto the ice, making it crack. Benjy stopped in his tracks, fear making him shake. I stood on the edge of the pond, crying. A man’s large boot appeared beside me. “What’s the problem, little lady?”

“My puppy is drowning. The man reached down, picked up the tiny puppy, and handed it to me. “Oh, thank you,” I manage to choke out.

“No problem, little lady, the puppy was only 6 inches out and not in danger of drowning at all, but I am sure he is cold. Go dry him off.”

Archie!

By Tessa Dean August 2021

“Ow, Archie,” Dana turns around and gives Archie a shove away from her. “It is dark in here, and the last thing I need is you kicking my heel. That hurt! Why I allowed you to persuade me to enter this dark, creepy building is beyond me. We could have stayed outside on the steps and watched the pond while we talked. Instead, you have me hiking through a dank old building and walk on the back of my foot. I admit the arch is pretty, but I would have preferred staying outside and looking at it from the outside. Who told you about this place anyhow?”

“I met a man while walking the other day, and he told me about this place. I thought it would be fun to walk through. He showed me pictures of the outside, although I had no idea this place was falling apart on the inside, or I wouldn’t have brought you inside of here. You know I try to make our short times together enjoyable. I’m sorry, I had no idea what we would find inside, and it was so dark, and I didn’t think to bring a flashlight, so I missed that hole, and it tripped me up. I didn’t mean to kick you. Look, let’s get our picnic and the blanket and spread it out near the pond. I brought your favorite lunch. Does that make you feel better?”

“Well, Archie, it will help, I suppose. The day is beautiful and pleasantly cool, so sitting by that pond would be a lovely place to eat our lunch. You’re always so thoughtful. Let’s get out of here. I’m starved.”

#WeekendCoffeeShare, Non-Fiction, Prompt

#WeekendCoffeeShare : Book Reviews, Streaming and Depression

Natalie’s Guidelines and newest post is here.

Coffee, Pen, Notebook, Caffeine, Cup
Picture compliments of Pixabay.com

Thanks to Natalie the Explorer for hosting this prompt.

Grab yourself a beverage and pull up a chair. If we were having coffee I would tell you that I am continuing my physical therapy but for some reason the pain is now increasing. They are increasing the amount of exercise so that might be part of it.

I would tell you that I am still doing live streams on YouTube, but the attendance is way down. There are more people streaming than ever, plus everyone is worn out from all the writing for NANOWRIMO in July. Sometimes I wonder why I bother for just a few people. There are some people that still get a decent amount of viewers, but there are so many streaming now that everybody gets a few.

I had a meeting with the people from this newest facility. It was a medical and financial review. The place would be great in so many aspects, but there are also a lot of people applying for a spot. The place is not fully built yet so move-in wouldn’t be until 30 to 60 days most likely. Everyone gets their own private room with a bath and kitchenette. The kitchenette has lots of cabinets, a microwave and a fridge with a small freezer. All meals are provided in the dining room so that would be more for snacks or if you wanted something other than what they were serving. My anxiety is high as I wait for a decision and I have no idea when that will be made.

I would tell you that I finally got an answer from my psychiatrist. It took a while. She wanted to keep adding all these anti-depressants that I have already taken and can’t take. I was really getting frustrated and finally pinned her down and asked why can’t I go back to my normal dose of the medication I was taking. Normally she is on the ball, but she gave me some crazy answer and told me how she can’t remember my old records and she doesn’t have them anymore and on and on. Finally she agreed that I can go back to the normal dose. Hopefully this helps. I am tired of the deep depression and having no desire to do anything, but sleep.

Have a great week everyone.

Review/Fantasy “Knights of the Wraithmaker,” by Melanie Doan

Reagan Colby and Benko Wyatt, best friends and fellow squires in the Academy of Knights in Nitedque, must work together with others who may or may not be on the same side as them to save Nitedque. As the Wraithmakers are devouring souls to build their army in the Sindycate, Reagan and her best friend Benko, who have made a blood oath to become life mates when she turns seventeen in a couple of years, must find a way to defeat them. Reagan is one of the best swordsmen in the Academy of Knights in her age group, despite being female. Magick is banned in Nitedque and so Reagan must be careful of keeping her majick under wraps as she practices to become stronger at it while keeping it secret. The magick leaves her vulnerable to Death, leader of the Sindycate, and she faints when a wraithmaker gets too close to Nitedque. The fainting spells come quicker and quicker leaving her with the knowledge that time is running out. Reagan lost her mother as a young child and she discovers that she has a connection to King Conrad Godwin that she never could have imagined – one that makes her understand why her oldest brother, Draven seemingly hated her from the days she was born. Her remaining family is also part of the King’s army trying to protect Nitedque from the Sindycate and an oncoming war seems inevitable. Follow Reagan and Benko as they try to avert a war between Nitedque and the Sindycate. Despite Magick being banned we meet others who still practice it in secret. Despite the fact that I do not like fantasy books for the most part, this book held my interest and I would highly recommend you read it if you are looking for a quick read and like fantasy books dealing with magick. The book moves at a great pace and is easy to follow. Get your copy on Amazon.
