Thomas gathered up the trash from their special meal. Ginny reached over and pinched him, laughing.

“It is so good to see you laughing again. I was beginning to wonder where my Ginny went. You were always smiling and laughing,” Thomas dropped the trash and hugged her to him.

“Thomas you are wonderful and I think it was heroic of you to travel through all of that snow just to pick up our meal. You got all my favorites too. Tell your Mom that I am not mad at her because she forgot to put the order in and it was later than we planned. It tasted wonderful especially since I had all that hospital food for a couple of weeks. That was terrible. You could have picked up some local fast food and it would have been better than what the hospital fed us.”

“I had my tonsils out when I was younger so my only memory of hospital foods was the ice cream they gave me.” Thomas was laughing at the faces she was making at him. It was good to have her back.

Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt #195 – Gargantuan

Weekend Writing Prompt #195 – Gargantuan

What an Appetite!

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Wally eyed the donut cabinet in the grocery store bakery. He wanted a dozen of donuts to start with. Further down were the cakes all decorated so prettily. There were also danishes and other pastries arranged in the storage cases designed to keep them fresh.

Wally did not care so much about freshness as his gargantuan appetite had to be assuaged with food and the sweeter the better as far as he was concerned.

The salesgirl watched in annoyance. She waited on Wally everyday she worked, and he nearly emptied all her cases out every day.

Let me Out!

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Mary Ellen pounded her small fists on the steel bars. She had been imprisoned by some maniac who lured her off the street and when she got close enough he grabbed her and threw her into the back of his van. He used chloroform to knock her out and pulled a large blanket out so he could sneak her into his basement through the door in his back yard.

For days on end she sat on the small pile of blankets and waited to see if he was going to let her out or even give her some food. She noticed a light come on and it lighted up a small spot in her cell. She was afraid, but she was also starving and she hoped he came bearing food.

A man she vaguely remembered walked into the basement and started towards her cell. He was silent and he hadn’t come bearing food. She wondered what he was up to. He had ignored her for days, possibly weeks. There were several bottles of water in the cell and she had drunk then sparingly for two reasons. One she didn’t want them to run out and two, well she would have to go to the bathroom and all he had left her was a bucket to use. It was full now and overflowing on the floor on the opposite side of the small cell.

She stared at him mutely. She didn’t want to say anything, but she wondered what he planned on doing to her.

Suddenly he grabbed his chest and fell to the floor just outside her cell door. He didn’t move or make a sound. She watched him for hours and just sat there quietly.

Days passed and he didn’t move. She was sure by now he was dead. The rats were coming to chew on the body and the smell became over-powering. Now what was going to happen to her? There was no more water and no other indication that there was someone else in the house.

She eventually just laid down on the pile of blankets. The rats were almost done with her captor and they were coming for her now. Each time she looked up they were a little bit closer. She thought about her family and knew they had missed her. Will her body ever be found she wondered. Not long now she thought as she drifted off into a slow death.

Thomas had told Ginny that today was going to be her welcome home dinner that they had to postpone in the beginning. He had been looking forward to it all day. Although he had to beg Ginny to allow him to bring her the dinner because she had finally started back to school and was worn out.

He pulled into the restaurant that his mom worked at, La Petite Maison de Cuisine, and started inside to pick up his order. His phone rang and it was his mom. “Thomas, I am so sorry, I put your order in my pocket and then forgot to give it to the chef. It is going to be late. I am so sorry.”

“Ma! Are you kidding me? It is already 9:00 PM and how long do you expect it to take to put the order together? I told Ginny I would be there no later than 9:15 PM. She still gets tired easily and she was already grumbling about being tired when I left to come pick up the meal. You were supposed to have it packed and ready to go.”

“Listen Thomas, I am sorry, but I am exhausted myself. I work 30 hours per week and have 12 kids to take care of all day. I forgot. I am sorry. I am sure Ginny will understand. She is a sweet girl. Just tell her that your mom forgot and that I apologize. She will be fine. The chef is just finishing up cooking it and then I will pack it up for you. You won’t be that late, relax.”

“Sorry Ma, I know you work hard for all of us. I am on my way in now.”

As Ginny climbed into his vehicle the nurse leaned in and suggested she take it easy the first few days and slowly build up her strength. The surgery had been hard enough on her, but recovering from the infection of the burst appendix had made it much worse.

Ginny didn’t argue with her because she was still feeling tired and resting would definitely help her get back to school earlier. She was scheduled to go back on Monday, but perhaps she might have to wait another week to rest up so she felt up to going back to school full time.

On the ride home Ginny didn’t say much. She didn’t feel much like talking right then. Getting dressed was hard even though she had help. She glanced at the clock on the dashboard and then closed her eyes since she had a half hour ride home. She knew that Thomas had planned a special meal for her and she wanted to enjoy it, but she was just so tired.

After a few minutes of driving Thomas asked her if she felt up to the meal or should he cancel it till she was feeling stronger? Ginny didn’t answer right away as she thought about it. She didn’t want to disappoint Thomas, but she was exhausted. The surgery and infection treatment had taken a lot out of her.

“Thomas would you be very disappointed if I asked you to wait, maybe a few more days. I think the first few days home will be quite a challenge. I don’t even have anyone to support me as my mom is so sick herself. Her nurses most likely are not going to take me on as well. I am on my own and no you know you won’t be able to help me. We aren’t married yet and so you can’t help me dress and bathe. You do understand my meaning right? We made a decision to wait until we were married before getting intimate. They may have just been words to you, but to me it means something.”

Thomas took his eyes briefly off the road to grab her hand and squeeze it. “You mean everything to me and that was a decision we made together and it means a lot to me that you would accept my decision to remain celibate until I am married. It is a part of my faith and has a lot of meaning in my religious beliefs. I love you Ginny and I thank you so much for agreeing to wait for me.”

“Thomas! Watch out for the other cars on the road. You just missed that last one while you were looking at me. Let’s get home in one piece please. Do you think we can just get some regular take-out for dinner tonight and save the special dinner? There will be many other dinners as we grow old together. I love you too, but please keep your eyes on the road from now on.”

The nurse had called around noon and told Thomas he could come pick Ginny up from the hospital around 2:00 PM. She suggested he park and come upstairs first because Ginny had a lot of belongings still to be packed up and taken home with her. Then he could go down and load up the car and bring it around to the front entrance where she would be wheeled down in a wheelchair for pick up.

Thomas hoped Ginny wouldn’t be too tired for their celebration. Maybe he should have put the order in to the restaurant for earlier, but he didn’t know what time she was coming home and besides he needed Rory to bring the order to them. He knew the restaurant could prepare it earlier, but he wasn’t sure if Rory would be available before 9:00 PM which was the time they agreed upon. He was working tonight at the restaurant with their mother and he didn’t get done until 8:30 he remembered Rory telling him.

At least the weather was cooperating. It was only raining outside and not the original snow storm they had predicted.

Watch Out For Forest Fires

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Sue and Christopher were hiking slowly through the woods and looking with disappointment at the burned husks of trees. The fire had been many years ago as there was plenty of lush green trees and bushes scattered among the burnt out areas.

When they arrived at the warden’s office there was an officer who was appointed to oversee the area and point out ways to hike safely and with caution in order to try and avoid another fire like that one.

However he also explained that wildfires are a natural part of many environments. They are nature’s way of clearing out the dead litter on forest floors allowing important nutrients to return to the soil. Fires also play an important role in the reproduction of some plants. That is why they would see so much lush overgrowth in the area where the fire had been. Nature has a way of taking care of its own.

Thomas listened to the weather report. Snow and ice were predicted for tomorrow which was the day Ginny was supposed to come home from the hospital. Perhaps the weathermen are wrong as they usually are and it will simply just be rain.

He knew that Ginny was still tired from recovering from her surgery and the infection due to her burst appendix, but he wanted her to enjoy her first day or possible night at home. He didn’t have a discharge time yet, but he had arranged with his dad to have the day off of work and told his teacher he would be out tonight so he could spend the first day home alone with Ginny. No family, just him and her at her house. Her mom and her nurse would be in their rooms and there would be no brothers and a sister to interfere with their time alone.

The doctor warned them she would have to take it easy and try to build her strength back up slowly. Nothing strenuous the first week or so. She was allowed to go back to class on Monday so she still had a few days to rest up.

He had already called up the restaurant where his mother worked, LA Petite Maison de Cuisine, and ordered Ginny’s favorite foods to be ready for pickup at 9 PM and his brother Rory was going to pick it up for him and drop it off at Ginny’s house. He was so excited to have her coming home and to be able to be alone with her again without a nurse or aide or a doctor poking their heads into the room.

Thomas finished work and headed home. Tonight was his night to watch the kids while Mom worked at the restaurant and Dad had his one night a week going out with the guys. Rory had done it last week and he had a pretty good idea he had plans for this Friday night, but Thomas only got to see Ginny Friday nights when he didn’t have to watch the kids and then Saturday and Sunday.

Ginny was still in the hospital recuperating from her burst appendix and she was lonely. Thomas missed seeing her as well, but he had to continue working, going to school the four nights a week he was scheduled, and keep getting her assignments from her college classes that she could do at home. She was still doing book learning and hadn’t started working in the actual hospital yet so he could bring her the current assignments. He brought her a laptop to work on so she wouldn’t fall too far behind. It was a real challenge keeping up with everything including doing his turn at babysitting the kids.

Thomas got up his courage and headed out side to where Rory was standing in the road and examining his front flat tire. “Hey man, do you have a spare,” Rory asked Thomas. “I never got mine fixed after the last flat tire I had.”

“I don’t know if it has air in it or not. I wanted to ask you something. Is there some way you can take over watching the kids tonight? I really want to see Ginny tonight and I know it is my night to watch them, but I can’t see her all week.”

“Oh man I would, but I have concert tickets tonight with my friends and I was supposed to drive, but my tire is flat.”

“I wonder what Joshua is up to tonight. I wonder if he could do it?”

“I don’t know man, you know Mom and Dad don’t like him babysitting too much since he is still under 16 years old and I think he has done it already this month so we could both have the same Friday night off.”

“I know, but I really miss Ginny and she is pretty lonely there at the hospital. Let me check my spare tire.” Thomas walked over to his vehicle and looked at his spare. “I’m sorry, but it is flat too. It isn’t holding air very well it would seem. Well since it is my turn to watch the kids you can take my vehicle. I’m not going to need it.”

“Hey man, cool. Thanks a lot. Sorry, I would do it if I didn’t already pay for these tickets.”

“It’s alright. I can Skype with Ginny instead. It is the next best thing to being there provided the kids behave although the twins are always a handful. Maybe I can get them to sleep early enough that I can still talk to Ginny for a while. She should be coming home soon and things will be easier once she is fully healthy again.”

Thomas sat awkwardly in the hospital waiting room. He had received a phone call early this morning that Ginny had been taken from the school by ambulance. They couldn’t tell him why, but that he needed to get to the hospital because they were going to have to do surgery from the looks of things. He was listed as her contact person since her mother was too sick to be able to do anything and they were planning on getting married.

He hurriedly left work telling his Dad, that he had to go to be with Ginny at the hospital. They said she probably needed surgery.

Unfortunately he had missed seeing her before they took her back for surgery. He looked at the clock and the doctor should be out shortly he would think. What was taking so long?

“Mr. Banks?” The surgeon stood before him.

“Yes. Is she ok?”

“She is ok now, but her appendix burst before we could remove it. We had to clean the infection out and that is what took so long. Did she mention any pain before today? She should have had some warning pain before it burst.”

“She complained yesterday and the night before of some stomach pain, but Ginny doesn’t like to complain and she just mentioned it once and then didn’t say anything else. The school called me this morning to tell me that she had to have an ambulance take her to the hospital as she was complaining of severe stomach pain.”

“The didn’t know her appendix was about to burst though so they didn’t rush things along. Her appendix burst on the way in and so we had to rush her to surgery which is why you couldn’t see her first. They cleaned out the infection and she will be on IV antibiotics for a couple of weeks at least. She should recover with little difficulty as we caught it not too long after it burst. She was lucky.”

“Can I see her now?”

“Are you family?”

“She’s my fiancee and since her mother is not able to take care of her I am her chief contact person and I need to see her. I have to make sure she is ok and let her mother know.”

“Ok you can go in and see her for a little while and then you must leave so she can rest. Tomorrow you can spend some more time with her. She will be here for a couple of weeks or maybe more depending on how fast she heals. We have to stop the infection.

“Ok, Doctor, thanks!”
