The Weekly Smile for the 22nd of February, 2021#weeklysmile

My smiles:

The smile is that although I am still doing a lot of research I am starting to work on the beta reader corrections for novel one and thinking about how to connect novel 2 to include the linkup to novel 1 and add it while doing the rewrites for the beta reader suggestions.

And my second smile is that the 2nd injection in the vaccine series is done and not so bad. Just have some arm pain like last time. Yeah! I am all vaccinated now.

Ginny’s clock radio went off and she stretched out under her sheets and blankets. She was staying at the Banks’s house for now and she had decisions to make. The Banks had been kind enough to let her stay on their couch for the last few weeks since her mom passed away, but she couldn’t stay here forever It wasn’t fair to them either. She had a house that was hers although she was all alone in it. She was a grownup now and had to start acting like one.

She returned to school yesterday and was told that she needed to find a second year student to be her mentor. Most of the nurses had already paired up. She took the list of names of the second year nurses who still needed partners. The only one she knew was Georgeanna Constantine. She actually lived not too far from Ginny. Maybe she still needed a junior partner.

She called the number and a male’s voice answered. “Um,” Ginny stuttered, “I am looking for Georgeanna Constantine.”

“Damn that school,” the male voice exploded. “My name is George Constantine. Someone keeps adding the Anna on it and I think they do it for fun. I am sorry if you are looking for a woman, I am definitely not one.”

“Oh, my God, I am so sorry. The paper says Georgeanna Constantine and I just assumed you were a woman. My name is Ginny Carpenter and I am a first year nurse and I was told I needed to get a second year nurse as a mentor. There are only a couple of names on here and the address is near mine and I thought I knew you, but boy was I wrong. I, ah, well do you still need a first year nurse to mentor?”

“Sure, Ginny, but will your boyfriend mind?”

“I don’t think so, George. I am sure he trusts me. Will your girlfriend mind?”

“Honey, my wife won’t mind as long as you behave yourself,” George was laughing so loud that she took the phone away from her ear.

“Uh, George, ok thanks. My phone number should be on the list. I am not really sure how this mentoring program works.”

“Basically if you have any questions and I can answer them, I will, otherwise just try to do what I do if you are unsure of something.”

“Thanks, George. Oh by the way, are we supposed to meet or anything?”

“Once a week, we’ll get lunch and talk about whatever might be troubling you about the nursing classes. Write down any questions that can wait. Otherwise you can call me if you need to. You have my number. Bye bye!”

Ginny stared at the silent phone in her hand. I can hardly wait.

Suddenly Ginny did a doubletake and almost pushed Thomas aside in her haste. “Mr. Zimmerman, I almost forgot. I pushed the whole matter of her funeral into the background. I don’t know anything about funerals or the first thing that I have to do about setting hers up. Can you help me?”

“Well Ginny, luckily your mother planned and prepaid for her funeral while she was still working. She didn’t want to have you worrying about it when her time came although none of us expected it to be so soon. So here is the contact information for Lawrence Funeral Home here in Angel’s Cove. Call them and they will take you through the steps. Just let me know when and where you are having a memorial service for her or just the funeral. Here’s my card with my personal cell phone number on it. Call me anytime and for anything. I am always here for you Ginny.”

Ginny took the card and fitted it into its own slot in her purse to keep it handy. She felt a kinship with Mr. Zimmerman and if he was telling her the truth he would have been her step dad and adoptive dad if it could be arranged. She had no reason to suspect he was lying to her and she felt grateful for everything he had done for her mom and her.

“Oh Mr. Zimmerman, aside from the death of my mother, my wishes have been granted. I will miss her dearly and am very sorry she will not be able to be at my wedding, but I knew deep down, she wouldn’t have been there anyhow. She couldn’t remember most of what I told her and some days she even forgot I was getting married and at the end there, well some days she simply didn’t know who I was. It was heartbreaking to watch.”

Thomas said, “There were many days Ginny arrived at my house crying after spending time with her mother. She wanted her opinion on things about the wedding, but her mother wasn’t able to even remember she was getting married. I can only imagine how frustrating that must have been. She was trying to see if her mother could help us with the expenses of the wedding, but we couldn’t get a straight answer from her and she never mentioned the trust funds.”

“Well son, there were medical reasons for that and I know before the stroke she talked about Ginny’s wedding a lot. Especially when we were starting to plan ours. I know she didn’t tell you Ginny because she thought you were still too young. No one expected the first stroke and at such a young age. After the stroke, I just canceled all of her plans. I knew she wasn’t going to be up to marrying me. If she would have let me I would have been happy with a justice of the peace wedding ceremony and be content to live with her as her husband to the end, but she was already at a point that she wasn’t considered of sound mind to give her consent to a marriage and I wasn’t going to push it. I just determined to do my best for the both of you as if I had married her. I hope you are not offended Ginny. I didn’t feel it was my place to tell you anything when your mother may say something either way and I didn’t want to confuse her anymore than she was. Some days she didn’t remember me either, but when she was lucid I was here for her. Like I said, all of this was done on those days and with the nurse, who I hired myself, as the witness.”

Ginny was silent for a moment, “This may sound bad, but I was jealous of my friends and their families. Except for one, they all had their mothers and then while we were saving for our wedding and I had to stop buying unnecessary clothes I was in a constant state of jealousy of my friends and their clothes. Does that make me a bad person?”

“Of course not, Ginny,” both Mr. Zimmerman and Thomas said together.

“Honey you are a teenaged girl. That is perfectly normal,” the lawyer said.

“Actually I am 20 now, but close enough I suppose.”

“Darling you will always be perfect to me,” Thomas smiled tenderly at her, putting his arm around her to hug her close to him.

“Ok so Ginny, your story can have a partial happy ending. You may not believe this, but your mother has been saving for your wedding and college costs ever since you were born. She worked for me as my number one lawyer and I helped her to set up trust funds to pay for your wedding and schooling. She never wasted a cent she didn’t have to. We realized we loved each other despite the difference in our ages and were planning our own wedding when the first stroke hit your mother taking a lot of her memory. I convinced the hospital that she could be taken care of at home with 24 hour around the clock nurses and housekeeping, plus someone to care for Ginny who was at a young age and still needed the guidance of her mother. That was when the nanny was hired to take care of you, Ginny. She took care of you and made sure you were regularly spending time with Caroline. When you turned 18 there was no legal reason for a nanny and you were on your own and used to taking care of things for your mother and spending time with her. The nanny made sure you understood about the stroke and her memory problems. Despite all of this you turned into a very beautiful, self-assured young woman. Caroline told me that you had pledged to her that you would remain a virgin until you were married and I know it’s not any of my business and may sound a little cold, but have you and Mr. Banks here had sexual intercourse? Or anyone else for that matter?”

Ginny flushed and glanced at Thomas, “Mr. Zimmerman, I meant what I told my mother and Thomas here also agrees that we should remain virgins until our wedding night. The most we have done is kiss occasionally and hug or snuggle a bit. His Dad and Mom said that was fine as long as it didn’t lead to sexual intercourse, which we have not allowed to happen. We are both still virgins. We have never seen each other naked or touched each other in a sexual way. This is kind of embarrassing, sir.”

“I won’t bring it up again Ginny, but I am glad to hear that you had held true on your promise to your mother. She meant a lot to me and so did you over the years. I was hoping to marry her and adopting you, but since your father wouldn’t even sign the divorce papers we were pretty sure he wouldn’t give up his connection to you even though he wanted nothing to do with you as a young child. As an adult he might very well try to connect and get money out of you and you have to be very wary of him. Do not let him back into your life and let me know immediately if you hear from him. Promise me this!”

“Don’t worry, I will make sure she is safe from him, sir,” Thomas promised boldly. “She will be my wife and taken care of properly. I will do my best to keep her safe from everyone and everything that could hurt her.”

“Ok great! So down to business. As far as the nurses go, I paid for them. She thought she was still working for me and I was taking the expense out of her paycheck. In the beginning she could still handle a few simple things, but for the most part her brain was too damaged. I did this out of love for her and I mean it when I say you are not to even think about trying to pay me back. If we had been married before the stroke I would have done the same thing. Now on to the trust funds. When she first started to work for me she set these trust funds up for you to have once she had passed away or when you turned 25 years old. She added to them every paycheck without fail. She had worked for me about 15 years when she had the first stroke. That was about 4 or so years ago now. I continued to add to the trust funds because I know she would have done that had we gotten married and even though we hadn’t, I still loved her and continued her wishes. You have $20,000 towards school and $20,000 towards your wedding.”

Thomas and Ginny stopped cold and just stared at each other. “You mean my mother put this money away for me and now I can, after proper mourning, have the wedding of my dreams? I got a scholarship to school so what happens to that trust fund?”

“It’s just turned over to you to use as you see fit. $40,000 would give you a great wedding and this house the rest of the funds would make a great down payment on your own house.”

Ginny reached out and hugged the lawyer. “I can’t believe this is happening.” She turned to Thomas and hugged him, tears streaming down her face. “My mother made it possible for us to have a great wedding and a home as well. I can’t wait to tell everyone.”

Indiscretion

by Tessa Dean February 2021

Jolie stared at the mountain of baskets that held her belongings. She was being punished and for her indiscretion she was being moved to the dorm that held a few more house mothers.

She looked over and saw the package from Will that started the whole problem. He had mailed her a copy of a book that was on the forbidden list. She showed Marti who just passed it on. Once the house mother found the book, she demanded to know who it belonged to and her ungrateful friends gave her up. The book was confiscated, and she was punished.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Feb. 20, 2021

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “nerve.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

***************

As I was growing up my mom always referred to my anxiety as a case of nerves. She was always giving me nerve medicine to calm down my nerves, etc.

I have also heard it said as you are getting on my last nerve, by someone just before they bashed them over the head or broke their leg, arm, etc.

Right now my nerves are on edge and very raw. I am anxiety-ridden for sure. This damn pandemic is not helping matters any. People who are normally gentle can get a bad case of nerves due to the pandemic.

Prompt

Reena’s Xploration Challenge #173

Reena’s Xploration Challenge #173

PROMPT #173

We have a one-word prompt this week.

FLOW

Flow is a state of mind where one is fully immersed in the task involved, and delivers a lot with minimum effort.

Flow is a software by Microsoft, which facilitates team functioning.

Flow is poetic, as in the flow of words, water, winds – taking something from one place to another.

All you need to do is just ‘flow’ with your creativity.

**********

When I think of flow I think of blood flowing through our bodies and giving us life. And the other thing that popped into my head is that flow can turn into flower and all the beautiful flowers there are in this world. I know that second one is just a spelling change, but it did flow into my brain LOL!
