**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne and his friends fist bumped each other and then pumped each other on the shoulder. All three of the boys were laughing hysterically at Cassie as she stumbled out of her house and to the house next door. It was obvious she had eaten the candy and they were thrilled with out how it worked out. They continued stuffing pizza into their mouths as they watched as the ambulance and police arrived. They thought it funny when the kid came out with the box of candy. Obviously she had been able to tell them she thought the candy was drugged. He wondered if she would realize that he was the one who sent the candy. She might think it, but how would she prove it? She didn’t even know who he was. He rubbed the bottle absently and wondered if he would have to resort to using it. He was planning as he went.

PROMPT #177

The visuals from last week are still floating in my eyes. So, I couldn’t think of anything other than a visual prompt for this week.

You are free to choose any one of the two images given below, and create a piece based on it.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is mirror-4217694_640.jpeg

You are free to use any medium you like to describe.

**********

Cassandra stumbled and fell getting off of her bed. She drug herself to the bathroom. Her vision blurry and somewhat odd. She tried to look at herself in the mirror. What was she seeing? Her face was separated as if she was looking into a fun house mirror, but this wasn’t fun. Was she dreaming again? She raised her hand to her face and she saw her hand, also fractured in the mirror. It was her and she wasn’t dreaming, but why was she seeing such a fractured image of herself in the mirror? She didn’t catch on right away.

She looked away. She didn’t know what she was seeing. Something was wrong and she was scared. She wanted her mother, but then remembered that she was supposed to be babysitting. Oh my God, the children she mumbled. What had happened to the children? They were too young to be alone and her other sister, Kimberley had a date tonight so she wasn’t home. Cassie was in charge and she couldn’t even deal with herself right now.

She vaguely remembered that she had received a box of chocolates in the mail and she assumed they were from Wayne. She loved chocolate and dove into the box and ate several of them and then remembers nothing until she woke up on her bed and stumbled into the bathroom to find her image fractured in the mirror. Was she drugged? Surely Wayne wouldn’t have drugged her. There wasn’t a name on the box that she remembered. It could have been from anyone. The chocolate, it had to be the chocolate.

Her face turned white at the implication. She had to get help. She couldn’t be responsible for her younger siblings. They were all under four years old. She had started to shake uncontrollably and she backed into the corner of the bathroom, not wanting to catch a glimpse of her face in the mirror. She was whimpering and starting to talk to herself. She didn’t know what to do. She needed her mother or at least an adult.

I’ve got to get next store for help she said. Mrs. Banks would help me, if she’s home tonight. Right now any semi-adult would help. There was almost always someone next door at the Banks house.

She headed down the stairs, looking for the children, but she didn’t see them. Oh God, where were the children? Mom is going to kill me.

She struggled with the door knob and finally got the door open. Stumbling across the lawn, she aimed for the Banks’ house. Please someone be home. The next house down was the Callan’s house. She fell up the porch steps and banged on the door as hard as she was able, although it hardly made a sound. What was wrong with her? She couldn’t trust herself to follow a line back to her house or further on to the Callan’s house. The Banks had to be home she pleaded with herself.

Thomas Banks, the oldest child, opened the door. He took one look at Cassie and called his girlfriend Ginny. “Something is wrong with her,” he started to sound frantic himself. “Help her into the house and on to the couch.”

Together they got her inside the house. “Cassie, Cassie…what’s wrong?”

All Cassie could manage was, “Where are the children? Oh God, where are the children?”

Thomas and Ginny exchanged looks. Thomas told Ginny to go next door and see if she could find the children. She must be talking about her little sister and two little brothers. Kimberley was older and could certainly take care of herself and the children so she must not be home either. Their mother was probably at work.

Thomas, hesitated and then picked up the phone. “9-1-1 what is your emergency?”

Thomas was flustered and didn’t know what to say. “I am not sure. I have my neighbor here and she’s acting very strange. My girlfriend when to find out about the little children she says she was watching. If I had to guess I would say she was on a drug of some sort, but I am not a doctor. Plus she doesn’t take drugs. We need help here. She’s mumbling and fidgety and she looks terrified.”

“Help is on the way. Stay with her. You mentioned children. Whose children? Hers?”

“No her younger siblings. There are three of them and they are all under four years old. Cassie is 19 years old I believe.”

Thomas’s phone rang. It was Ginny. “The children are all in bed sleeping. They all seem ok. I will stay here with them. How’s Cassie?”

“She’s pretty messed up. I called 9-1-1 because she needs more help than we can give her. I will see you once their mom gets home or if they take Cassie to the hospital. Actually their mom is going to need us to watch the little ones until Kimberley gets home because I am sure she will be going to the hospital to be with Cassie.”

Just then sirens could be heard in the distance. Help was on the way. Cassie started screaming, “I can’t look, I can’t look!”

Thomas allowed the paramedics in and stepped away from Cassie. She had started to punch at something only she could see. She pleaded for it to go away and to leave her alone. When they tried to touch her she flinched and told them to leave her alone and go away. “Don’t let the babies have the candy, bad candy!”

Confusion reigned. Thomas called Ginny and asked about candy in some form. She keeps warning us not to eat the candy.

Ginny looked at the coffee table and there was a box of chocolates sitting there and they were open. Several pieces had been eaten. She told Thomas who informed the paramedics who were still struggling with her. Drugged Candy? He was told to get the candy and any wrappings that might have been with it.

Thomas came back and gave it to the police who had finally arrived on the scene. One of the officers was told to take it in and get it analyzed right away. She appeared to be reacting to a drug although they were not sure which. The paramedic sent one of the EMTs over to quickly check on the children to make sure they were actually sleeping and not, God forbid, dead.

Cassie was given an injection of Diazepam to try and calm her down. They had to get her to the hospital quickly. It was unknown how much of whatever drug had been injected into that candy she took. They couldn’t take her in kicking, screaming and punching at something only she could see.

**********Cassie’s Point Of View**********

“I do, I do, I do. I take Wayne Connors to be my lawfully wedded husband, now let me kiss him,” Cassie sits up immediately as they approach the kiss and then realized she was alone in her bed. There was no wedding. She had been dreaming. This was a new development. She hadn’t dreamed about him before while sleeping. She was always daydreaming though and she wasn’t sure which was worse. Either way, Wayne was not her husband although that is what she desired.

Her obsession with him was getting stronger. She ran her tongue over her lips, wetting them in preparation for his kiss, although she knew she had been dreaming. She spent almost every waking moment fantasizing about him and their upcoming marriage. She continued to call him every day, several times a day, even though he did not answer or return her messages. She just knew he would call her back soon. He was probably still sick or maybe he was even sicker and was in the hospital. Maybe she should call the local hospital and ask if he was there.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne loved stringing women along. He got his kicks that way and he loved knowing that he was hurting them. Damn women. They weren’t good for anything much. His own mother ignored him and didn’t care if he was fed or clothed or anything. She could care less. He hated women and so he got back at them by hurting them. He set them up and then after a date he would dump them, but he wouldn’t tell them. He just let the phone ring and ring until SHE finally got the message.

However, Cassie wasn’t giving up. She keeps calling. He even bought more minutes for his phone and he never does that. This damn woman has gotten under his skin and he can’t shake her. Not for lack of trying. She had sunk her teeth in and was holding on. What should he do? He didn’t want to have a real relationship with her. He didn’t, he was sure of that, but for some reason he couldn’t dump that phone effectively cutting her off. He listened to every message she left and he had to convince himself he wasn’t interested in a relationship with her. Well, maybe one date. BUT NO, Cassie wouldn’t let it end at one date. She won’t let it go now and they never went on a date. He met her exactly one time and she is holding on strong. What to do? What to do? He strokes the bottle in his pocket again.

**********Cassie’s Point Of View**********

“Alright Cassie, your mother mentioned that there is a man, not a boy, but an older man in your life at the moment. Your behavior started changing when this man broke a date with you and refuses to talk to you. Now I know this probably doesn’t make sense to you, but there is probably a very good reason why he is not returning your phone calls or rescheduling this date you had set up. Your mother says that you broke it off officially with Peter Smith since this guy said he would not date you if you had a boyfriend.”

“I don’t want to talk about Wayne…”

“Don’t interrupt me now Cassie, I am trying to understand this situation. You can have your say in a minute. So we have an older man, of undetermined age who made a pass at you. He offered you a date and said you would have to break it off with Peter first. So you did and I imagine that didn’t go well.”

“I won’t lie, Peter’s a jerk and he was enraged and going to hit me, for the second time I might add. I don’t want someone like that for a boyfriend, plus he doesn’t see a need to have a job and I am tired of it. Wayne was right about that. I have goals and they don’t include a non-working, little boy who goes into rages, for a boyfriend.”

“Ok Cassie, we are getting somewhere. Now tell me about Wayne from the beginning and all of it please. This needs to be settled. Your mother says she has never seen you like this and apparently everyone you know feels the same way. So tell me about Wayne and why this man is so important to you.”

“I met Wayne at the restaurant I work at, you know, the Italian one in town. I was having a hard time with a nasty customer and he spoke to me about the situation. He told me he thought the guy was a jerk and we started to talk. He asked if I had a boyfriend and I said maybe, maybe not. Peter and I were having problems and I told Peter to leave me alone unless he got a job and that is the first time he almost hit me. He goes into these trances and becomes enraged and shouting at him brought him out of it and he seemed shocked to find his balled fist aimed at me face. Anyhow he did the same thing when I broke up with him because Wayne said he wouldn’t date me if I had a boyfriend and I didn’t exactly have a boyfriend since we weren’t seeing each other since he refused to get a job. I don’t know how old Wayne is. Rhonda Jo told me that she thought it was very weird and she took the business card he had given me with his number on it and it was perforated she said so it was a homemade card and no address was on it. Just a name and number. She said she was worried about me and the fact that he wasn’t returning my calls had started to upset me. He finally answered and said he had been sick and he had to cancel our date so I wouldn’t get sick. I know I can be gullible at times. I ate his attention up.

“Cassie, this all sounds suspicious. Your friend, Rhonda Jo is right.”

“I know she is right and so is everyone else, but I had my heart set on going on a real date with a man. He refused to meet my friends. He said he was only interested in me and not my high school friends. I guess I am upset about this because he isn’t returning my calls, he refuses to meet my friends and they seem to be right in their suspicions. He is up to no good and deceitful, but I liked him. I guess if I was honest I would like any man who was not Peter paying attention to me, but Rhonda Jo is right to be suspicious I suppose. I don’t know what to do. I guess I am not as mature as I wanted to think I was.”

“So you have no idea where this guy lives, or even if Wayne Connors is his real name. Cassie to top it off you have the fact that he is not returning your calls. Doesn’t that tell you he is not interested despite the little game he seemed to be playing that night. You played right into his hands and he is not interested in you personally. Any girl would most likely do. Can you describe him?”

“That is the other issue. I asked him what color his hair is and he says he keeps it shaved so I would never see the color so it didn’t matter and he had the most brilliant blue eyes. I had hoped he had dark hair, but he says it never grows out. The only description I have is well-built so he probably works out, blue eyes and a shaved head. Sounds pretty bad when I say it that way, but I really wanted to go on a real date. He said we could go anywhere I wanted and even to the restaurant I worked at and I thought that would be cool to have my friends waiting on me for once. Boy this really sounds stupid now that I am saying it out loud. I guess the fact he is not returning my calls is pretty much evidence that he really doesn’t want to go out with me. What an idiot I am being!”

“You are not an idiot. You are someone who just wanted to be wanted by someone who seemed to have the same goals and feelings as you. Peter wasn’t there for you and didn’t seem to care so you clung to him. Cassie, there are plenty of boys in your class who are interested in you. I see them following you with their eyes and their tongues practically falling out. Isn’t there someone here you could try dating. He would be your age and everyone would know him. I am concerned with your safety as well as your mental state of being and your school work, which is suffering right now.”

“I just thought if he wanted to finally have that date, I would make sure my friends were with me. He doesn’t know them so he wouldn’t know they were around watching out for me.”

“Are you sure he doesn’t know who they are. How do you know he hasn’t been following you around. He could put on a wig and use contact lenses to change his eye color. He could have followed you one night to see your friends. You need to think about this. You think he doesn’t know them, but what if he does? How can you be sure? Has he been back to the restaurant since that night?”

“Oh geesh, I don’t know. I would say no, but now that you brought up the disguise, how would I know for sure. He could even change his voice, couldn’t he? We were going to have dinner and catch a movie. All fairly harmless I would think. Lots of people around.”

“Cassie I am worried about you. Despite everything we talked about I am afraid that you will be trying to date him still. I wish you wouldn’t. I wish you would listen to the people who love you and for the love of God, not do this even if he finally says the date is on.”

“I won’t promise you or anyone else that.” And with that she got up and walked out of his office. Mr. Farrell stared after her thoughtfully, but didn’t continue the conversation.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne thrived on deceit and lies and he prayed on the gullible. He could usually tell after talking to someone for a bit whether they would fall for his lies. He usually takes them out for one date and that is the end, but he realized that Cassie was different and he was right. She might be gullible, but she was determined to go out on a date with him and called him constantly. The fact that he didn’t answer the phone didn’t deter her. She was way too determined for him. He didn’t want to do it, but he was going to have to do something about her. She wasn’t going to give up obviously.

He knew her four close friends. He had put on a wig numerous times and changed his eye color and gone out. She had no idea who he was. If he agreed to a date and to meet her at the restaurant, the friends would be able to follow him home so he had to find a better way to do this, because this woman had him under her spell and he was going to do something stupid and go on a date with her. She intrigued him.

**********Cassie’s Point Of View**********

Cassie went to school, but she refused to speak to anybody. Even her best friends were ignored. Ronnie was really worried about her. Cassie was always such a happy person. Even during the break-up with Peter she seemed to take it very well and was looking forward to the date with Wayne. Ahhh, Ronnie thought, the date with Wayne. It still hadn’t happened and her friend was beside herself. She became attached to him despite the warnings that he was trouble and now that he was ignoring her she wanted him even more. Ronnie didn’t know what to do about her friend.

Today was one of the few days that Cassie had not done her homework. The teachers were puzzled when the usually bubbly teenager sat and just stared out the window. This was not like her.

Mrs. Benton called down to the guidance department to ask advice about Cassie. Should she intervene or let it go for now?

Cassie was called down to the guidance department to Mr. Farrell’s office. She glared at her teacher on the way past her desk and out of the room.

“Come in Cassie and have a seat,” Mr. Farrell said. He noted that the usually smiling teenager had her arms crossed and sighed heavily. She narrowed her eyes at Mr. Farrell and just stood in front of his desk. Normally Cassie would sit down and they would talk. He could see that today’s meeting was not going to go that way.

“What do you want, Mr. Farrell?” She asked in a sharp tone as she started to tap her fingers on his desk.

“Cassie I can’t help if you won’t tell me what is wrong. Mrs. Benton is worried about you and said that you had not done your homework and that you were just sitting there staring out the window. She didn’t know what to do. You are always so happy Cassie and now something is obviously wrong.”

“I told my mother this morning that I didn’t want to talk about it and that includes you and Mrs. Benton. None of you can help. There is nothing to talk about. Can I go now?”

“Cassie, no! Please sit down this minute. I don’t want to have to call your mother or suspend you, but this behavior is not appreciated or acceptable.”

Cassie ignored him and stood there waiting for a reason to run. She was frustrated and didn’t know how to deal with her frustration. He was right about one thing. This was definitely not her normal behavior and she didn’t know what to do and what her choices were. She didn’t want to be suspended, whether it was in school or out of school. She needed to talk to Wayne. Maybe he could help her.

“Cassie, is there someone you can talk to? I am trying to help you here. I am about to call your mother. Maybe she can help me with this situation. Does she know what this is about?”

“Look Mr. Farrell, I don’t think any of you can help me with my current situation. I don’t know what exactly is wrong myself.”

Mr. Farrell called Mrs. Jones. “Mrs. Jones, I have Cassandra in my office right now. The teacher couldn’t communicate with her and she is refusing to talk to me as well. Do you know anything at all about this situation?”

Cassie finally sat down. Her eyes were narrowed and she wouldn’t look at him. She sighed again and then stood up and started pacing.

“Wayne?” Mr. Farrell looked at Cassie and saw the color drain out of her face. Ahh we are getting somewhere. “Thanks, Mrs. Jones. I still might have to suspend her if she doesn’t start doing her homework or participating in class. This is not like Cassie at all.”

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne was facing burnout. He had never met the likes of Cassandra Jones. She continued calling. The phone would continue ringing until it ran out of minutes unless he added time to the phone. He doesn’t remember meeting another girl like her. He wanted her to stop calling him and just go away, but part of him was intrigued with the beautiful blonde teen. What should he do? He knows getting involved with her would be a mistake and one he would have to pay for if he didn’t end it soon. He fingered the bottle in his pocket. He had used it a few times, but preferred to flee while he still could. He really liked living in Angel’s Cove although the house was rented, it did have a basement that he could use if necessary.

The phone on the couch rang and he debated on whether to answer it. He just didn’t know what he wanted to do. Cassie had made quite an impression on him and he couldn’t let that happen.

Welcome to Share Your World and Melanie’s Rules!

QUESTIONS

How well do you know your next-door neighbors?   Do you like them?   (credit to Cyranny for the question) Well here’s the thing. I am crammed into a high rise. There are mere feet between our doors. Some are ok and some “OH MY GOD!” Does that help? One is great and will do anything for me without expecting something in return. The other one expects everything with me and then remembers he needs to be helpful to me so I will continue to do things for him. He does take advantage of me, but I let it go as he does things in return so fair is fair. The other’s I don’t care one way or the other. I am only close to a few people in that 100 apartment high rise.

Do you have a full length mirror?  (credit to Sadje for the rest of the questions) No, I only have a mirror in the bathroom and can barely see in it.

(for the men)  Do you shave every day or do you like the ‘stubble’ look, or a beard?

(for the ladies)   How long do you spend putting on make-up in the morning? I do not wear or own makeup. I am who I am, take me or leave me, doesn’t matter to me and if makeup is that big a deal I don’t need you in my life.

How many items of clothing are in your bedroom (or closet) and not hung up? This pains me, but I am a hoarder and a slob so there are probably about 40 plus items not hung up. And there are way too many for me to wear so I have too many period.

**********Cassie’s Point Of View**********

Cassie stretched out on her bed after turning off the alarm clock. It was a rainy morning and she was in no rush to get ready for school. She simply put her arms behind her head and rubbed her neck while she watched the little bird out of her window. He was staring intently at her. She pondered what he was thinking as he watched her.

“Cassie,” he mother called from down the hall. “Are you ready for school yet? I have to use the bathroom to get ready for work.”

“Damn,” Cassie uttered under her breath. Her mom was going to know that something was wrong. “I’m coming!” She ran down the hall and hoped her mother wouldn’t notice the fact that she wasn’t her usual bubbly self. She was usually excited to go to school, but not today. She just wanted to crawl back under the covers.

Her mother followed her into the bathroom. “Ok, what is up with you today young lady?”

Clearing her throat, Cassie managed to utter “Ummm.” She then turned away from her mother sure that her very thoughts were there for her to see.

Her mother reached out to hug her and she flinched. Now this was the Cassie she was used to. “Cassie, please tell me what is going on. You were excited a few days ago about this new guy and now you don’t want to get out of bed and go to school. I know something is up.”

Turning her back on her mother, she said, “I don’t want to talk about it right now. Can we please drop the subject? I have to get ready for school.”

Reluctantly her mother left the room. She heard the lock click from the inside.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne sighed heavily. Cassie had called again last night and he ignored the call. It was the only phone in that pile still ringing. The others had got the message and gone away. Cassie was determined and that annoyed him to no end.

He narrowed his eyes. He crossed his arms and tapped his foot. What should he do about this one? She was still talking about their “date” when he was feeling better. She was a lot smarter than he realized.

He was afraid if he agreed to the date then she would have her “friends” watch out for her. It was obvious they were all close and watched out for each other. If he agreed to one date he was setting himself up for more and she obviously doesn’t let go once she has you in her clutches. Look at the boyfriend from when she was a young child. She just assumed they would be together forever and he had to shock her into letting him go. That is where he went wrong. He should have realized that once she is determined about something she would continue that way. She now sees something she wants more than that old boyfriend. He made himself more appealing before he realized what had happened.

He could put a wig on and take out the blue contact lenses. She most likely wouldn’t recognize him, but going near her was asking for trouble. He felt himself drawn to her though and that was part of his problem here. He could simply tell her to get lost, but he was drawn to her as well. For now! What happens when he is tired of her? She doesn’t let go easily he has already seen that in her personality. And the friends she grew up with, well they would probably follow him home and he couldn’t have that. How to get her away from them was his new problem to figure out. Since it was raining today he had plenty of time for introspection and answers to his problem. He didn’t want to have to resort to the final ending, but if she didn’t let go soon it might be his only chance to get rid of her.

My smiles:

Still doing beta reader corrections and rewrites for book 1, have at least half done, but have until May 1 to get it to the editor. I am rewriting certain parts thanks to the beta readers comments.

During the week it was quite warm, low 70’s and so my neighbor washed my car by hand and rubbed it clean with a towel. What we thought were scratches were simply very clingy dirt and it washed off and looks really good for a car that is 15 years old. I have to sell it when I move to assisted living as I can’t pay for the insurance since Medicaid takes my whole disability check to pay for the facility. I get maybe $50 a month for incidentals. So no car. A roommate and no car. Big adjustments so far. Don’t know what else will change for me.

Weekend Writing Prompt #200 – Vista

Look at That?

By Tessa Dean March 2021

The vista was spread out before her. Lights twinkling in the distance marking the spot where the humans were, ripe for snatching. Her stomach growled in response. It’s time!
