How Deep is it?

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Ron had been told by some of his friends who hiked a lot that there was a nice area up on Walden Manor property. The path approached a large stone embankment that suddenly dropped off right in front of you. No one seemed to know if it was the cement remnants of an old bridge or not. However suddenly the cement dropped off and overlooked a body of water that was deep and dark. It was said to be bottomless there, but in reality there had to be a bottom of some sort although it could be much deeper than anyone could imagine.

Ron decided to make the trip to the area and see this spot everyone talked about. He and a few of his buddies would hike up looking for an area to camp in for the night. If it suddenly dropped off he didn’t want to be up there hiking in the dark so they would camp before they got there and then in the morning resume the trip to the drop-off spot. He didn’t think he would try to jump into the water as he had heard rumors of those who tried to jump into the water and never came back up. Just seeing it would be enough for him.

One-Liner Wednesday – Drive Slowly

Badge by Laura @ riddlefromthemiddle.com

I had an appointment at the drive-through brain scraping for my Covid Test for my hospital procedure and there was a person leaving and none in line, but I was early, what to do I think, so I pulled up and said I’m early and they said no problem. Not like they were fighting to keep the line moving.

“Mrs. Banks, dinner is delicious,” Ginny smiles at her future mother-in-law.

“Are you trying to butter me up, little miss?” Mrs. Banks smiles back. “By the way you can call me mom as you are almost my daughter.”

“Well, I don’t want to spoil a beautiful dinner, but Thomas and I have some things we need to talk over with you and my mom. I would have asked you if my Mom could join us if she could indeed join us, but she is pretty limited in leaving the house. The wedding is going to be hard enough on her and she will probably have to leave before the reception, which is another problem we have run into.”

“Ginny I know this is hard for you and Thomas, but you don’t need a big wedding to get married. The marriage is the important part. The other stuff is not as important. We will get through this, don’t you worry.”

“Oh Mrs. Banks, uh Mom, you make me feel a little bit better. However, we do need to get serious here for a bit. I am overjoyed to be marrying your son. Believe me I can hardly wait any longer, but I know that some things will take time and need to be booked in advance.

“The church says it needs a minimum of 6 months to book the church for the wedding. We have certain things we must do before they grant us rights to get married in the church. Ginny doesn’t have to convert to Catholicism, but if she does it will push the wedding back to another year or two.” Thomas explains looking at his list. “She is willing to convert, but I think she should wait until after the wedding unless we want to wait up to another year or so although that would allow us more time to save for the wedding, reception, and honeymoon. Not to mention the dress she absolutely loves.”

Ginny looks serious as she says, “I know this is going to be expensive no matter how simple we make it. My mother is sick and her savings is shrinking to cover her nursing care. My dad is a no-good-for-nothing jerk and doesn’t help her and certainly hasn’t even contacted me. I have never met him. Thomas has some savings and I have a very little savings although now I am going to get serious about the no frivolous buying sprees I go on. I will be saving as much as I possibly can from my hours at the restaurant. Oh I just had an idea. Don’t they rent out that room for receptions in the back? Do you think we can get a discount since we both work there?

“Excellent idea Ginny. I will talk to the boss tomorrow and see what he says. I don’t know what the average cost is for a place like that, but it would most likely be less if we can get an employee discount. But wait, we have a large, rather nice backyard. What if we plan the reception to be out there with tents included in case of bad weather. It would most likely be a lot less than a fancy hall. I have heard that you would probably average around $14,000 or more for everything at a reception hall. We can do it here for much less, I am sure. I would check around at prices to rent things we need before asking for a discount on that reception hall at the restaurant. Remember that is a fancy restaurant and most likely it would be even more than $14,000. If he gave us a 10% discount it would be about $1400 dollars, 20% would be around $2,800. I don’t know if he would even give us a discount.”

“Oh Thomas, that would be a wonderful idea. I love your back yard. Ok, tomorrow I will make up a list of what we need and call around for rental pricing. You have to get the measurements of the back yard for tents. Which brings us to another problem. We know that you have a large family and the cost alone for your family is going to be pretty large. My family is much smaller, but they still will add to the amount and then we have friends. We aren’t sure we will have enough for the reception at all. I don’t mind looking at wedding dresses on the sales racks. I don’t have to have the dress of my dreams. It is expensive and I don’t want to wait for five years to get married.”

“Ginny, please don’t start this again. I want you to have your dress.”

“Thomas which is more important, a dress or our marriage as soon as possible?”

Oh Grandma, Where are You?

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Amelia looked at the last line of her long list of nursing homes. The list was just for her state because she didn’t think her mother would go too far away from home, but now she was on the last home and no sign of her Grandmother. She had recent pictures in case her Mother had changed her name and so far no one had seen her or had her registered at that nursing home.

Amelia was crying now. She missed her Grandmother who she considered her real mother rather than that whimpering, whiny drunk who gave birth to her. If she found her, unless there was a medical reason she needed to be there, she was bringing her home to live with her.

She got her tissue out and dried her eyes. She wanted to be professional so they would listen to her if her Grandma happened to be there. Please God she prayed. Let Grandma be here.

Amelia approached the southern looking mansion and spotted the small pond with water lilies floating on it. How pretty, she thought. She looked around her. The place looked nice. Would her Mother pay this much for her Mother to live in a nice home like this? Her Mother had money, but she never spent it on her or her Mother. She drank her money away. Probably some drug usage as well.

Amelia walked towards the beautiful white double door entrance. She didn’t know if she should knock or just walk in. She was pretty sure it was a nursing home so she should just walk in.

Opening the door she was met by a woman, who she knew was older than she looked. She looked good for her age. She was in good shape and probably worked out. If she lived here this place must be quite expensive because she was also nicely dressed.

Amelia was stuck on what to say at first. She just couldn’t imagine her Grandma living here, although it was a beautiful place.

“May I help you young lady?” The woman had a sheaf of papers in her hand and was set to look through them.

Amelia began to cry. She tried to talk, but the tears were coming harder and faster. She had vowed not to do this, but this was her last chance for the most part without hiring a private detective.

The woman put an around her and led her over to a plush couch. She sat down next to her with her arm still around her. “What’s wrong honey?”

Amelia worked to pull herself together. She started her spiel. She had used it so many times she knew it by heart. She reached in her purse and pulled out her pictures and before she could say a thing, the woman said, “Ruth? Why do you have pictures of Ruth?”

Amelia said, “You know her? She is my grandmother and I have searched this whole state for her.”

“Yes honey, Ruth lives here and has for many years now. Why didn’t you know that?”

“Because my no-good, drunk of a Mother hid her Mother from me. Ruth raised me when my Mother couldn’t. My Mother hated to be reminded of it so she sent her away. She refused to tell me where and I have searched this whole state looking for her in places like this. If she isn’t medically dependent on living here I want to bring her home to live with me.”

“Well, I am gathering you must be the Amelia she always talks about. She is medically fine and will be delighted to see you again I am sure. Come with me, she is on the veranda with Maisie. Maisie will miss her, but maybe you can bring her up to see Maisie occasionally for a visit.”

“Oh I would do anything for my Grandma. She raised me right.”

“Come this way, child.” Amelia put on a happy face and followed the woman to the veranda on the side of the house. There was her Grandma and she looked great. This place was wonderful for her. She hoped she would want to leave to live with her.

“Amelia? Amelia is that you child?” Ruth raised herself up and walked over to meet them. She put her arms around Amelia and hugged her tight. “I never thought I would see you again. Rhonda made sure I was far away although she did put me in a decent place.”

“Oh Grandma I am so happy to see you. I have been driving all over the state looking for you. I want to bring you home to live with me. I have a nice three bedroom house and you would even have your own bathroom. All the rooms have their own bathrooms so you could choose whichever one you wanted. Will you come live with me? I promise to bring you to see Maisie almost every weekend for a day or if they rent out rooms occasionally I could rent you a room for the weekend and you could stay here all weekend. What do you think?”

“I would love to live with you doll and you are such a nice Granddaughter to think of letting me still see Maisie. Yes they keep guest rooms for just that reason. You could drop me off and then pick my up on Sunday.

Amelia hugged Grandma and then they headed to Grandma’s room to pack. Maisie came along to help. The staff brought in some boxes and told her to just pack what she absolutely needed right now and then she could pick up the rest of her things on the next trip when she came to visit with Maisie.

Welcome to Share Your World and Melanie’s Rules!

QUESTIONS

In your opinion, do May/December (older partner with much younger partner) romances ever work? I think they can work sometimes. An older male and a younger female aren’t so bad, but I tried it with a younger male. I was 50 and he was 24. I found it awkward in several ways. I prefer older men, preferably at least 10 years old than me.

What physical action or gesture do you find romantic? Kissing and holding hands.

What is your idea of a romantic dinner? Seafood since it was always a special meal. Now I have a neighbor who makes me a shrimp dinner at least once or twice a month and we aren’t in a relationship other than friends.

Is ‘love’ a real ‘thing’ or merely a physical chemical response and brain activity pulling our emotional strings? I honestly don’t know because I fall in love after meeting someone for five minutes sometimes. I don’t know them I just fall in love and fantasize about our relationship that is in my mind completely. And I certainly was NOT in love or even felt love for my husband. He’s been gone for 21 years now and he is miserable with his girlfriend and I am poor, but happier. Go figure.

Thomas said to Ginny, “I am having a vision in my mind of you walking down the aisle to me in a beautiful white wedding gown.”

Ginny felt for his hand and held it tightly. “Thomas you are such a kind person and I love you telling me that you have such lovely visions of me, but you know we have talked about the problem of the cost of the wedding.”

“Ginny please, I know what we have discussed, but I want you to have the wedding of your dreams.”

“My mom doesn’t have much and the bride’s parents are expected to pay for the wedding. I have never met my dad so I doubt he will be paying for anything. So that leaves you, and me, and if your parents want to chip in some to help that would be great. This wedding is going to have to be small. We are going to have to have a very small list of attendees and I know your family is huge which is a problem already. I don’t want to disappoint anyone. Neither one of us can take on another job between school and working we are already tapped out. So we either postpone the wedding now or have a smaller one than we had hoped. And we need to figure out our budget soon and the guest list and we are going to have to have an uncomfortable conversation with your parents about possibly chipping in. It could be their wedding gift to us if that helps.”

“Oh man, I wanted you to have the wedding of your dreams and the dress you constantly point out to me in the wedding magazines. You should be allowed to have that even if we have to live a smaller lifestyle in the beginning until we are out of school and getting paid more.”

“Thomas, the wedding date we picked is coming up. We have to let your priest and church know what date soon. And if we want a reception in a hall we will have to pick that out real soon and put the down payment down. The other option is a small reception held at the church after the wedding, if your church would allow it. I know many of my friends did it that way. Also how many attendants are we going to have? We definitely need a best man and a maid or matron of honor, but the others are extra and we need to make a decision so they are equal. I don’t have a sister so I don’t have to worry about paying for her gown, but you will most likely have your brothers in the wedding to some extent and your family will need tuxes for them all. Plus your dad needs a tux and my mom will need a new dress. You also need a tux.”

“I have a savings account I have been saving in and it is getting pretty big. How about you Ginny? Do you save your income or spend it?”

“Thomas I am a girl and partial to new shoes. I spend a lot of my salary so my savings account is not very big, but from this date forward I will not buy anything that is not absolutely necessary. Including all the new clothes I always buy.”

“Okay we need to set up a budget, talk to your mom, and my parents about what they can contribute and then work from there. I will ask my parents about all the family since we can’t afford to invite them all most likely. They may want to chip in some so we can invite more. I don’t mind a small reception at the church if they allow it and we can wait on the honeymoon if you want to save a little there. Once the wedding is paid off we can start saving for our honeymoon.”

“We might have to push the wedding date out,” Ginny warned him.

“I dare you,” Thomas leveled an evil grin at Ginny and then laughed at her expression.

Ginny was looking at him in shock. “Thomas, how could you dare me to do that. We have never kissed in front of your parents before. And they know we plan to remain celibate until we get married. I know kissing isn’t super intimate and certainly not a bad thing, but I feel so weird kissing in front of anyone.”

“Oh come on Ginny. They will think it is cute most likely.”

Just then Thomas’s parents came downstairs clad in their pajamas to get a snack. Thomas arched a brow at her. She nodded yes briefly and closed her eyes. Their lips met and both of Thomas’s parents clapped and cheered them on.

“We were beginning to worry about you two. I know you have taken a vow of celibacy, but you don’t absolutely have to abstain from kissing and snuggling. Celibacy is definitely no sexual intercourse or penetrating sex of any kind. I know you snuggle so you aren’t fully celibate and a kiss now and then is not bad. Don’t be so hard on yourselves. A kiss and snuggle are okay as long as they don’t lead to sexual intercourse,” Mr. Banks told the blushing couple.

Thomas gathered up the trash from their special meal. Ginny reached over and pinched him, laughing.

“It is so good to see you laughing again. I was beginning to wonder where my Ginny went. You were always smiling and laughing,” Thomas dropped the trash and hugged her to him.

“Thomas you are wonderful and I think it was heroic of you to travel through all of that snow just to pick up our meal. You got all my favorites too. Tell your Mom that I am not mad at her because she forgot to put the order in and it was later than we planned. It tasted wonderful especially since I had all that hospital food for a couple of weeks. That was terrible. You could have picked up some local fast food and it would have been better than what the hospital fed us.”

“I had my tonsils out when I was younger so my only memory of hospital foods was the ice cream they gave me.” Thomas was laughing at the faces she was making at him. It was good to have her back.
