Fairy Tale Land!!

By Tessa Dean August 2021

My friend Kimmy and I decided to take our five and six year olds to Fairy Tale Land. From what I had read it was a take off of a theme park called Story Book Land when we were kids. The kids were excited and so we packed a cooler with lunch and piled into my SUV. The kids were talking animatedly in the back seats about what they hoped to find there as none of them had been there before.

I thought back to my days at Story Book Land and remembered the children’s rides and tableaus of fairy tales and kid’s stories. There was also a small train that drove constantly around the whole park and everyone had to stop when the warning lights were blinking red and wait for the train to pass.

From what the advertisements said, this was definitely similar although updated from the park we went to as children. We parked in the huge lot and noted where the lunch pavilions were. We could eat in our car or if we wanted shade we could go over to the pavilions and eat there. We would decide later as the kids were pushing us to go to the park.

We approached a large entrance building and suddenly one of our children yelled, “Hey mom, look at that large dragon on top of the building.” We all stopped and stared. The entire roof of the building was covered by a large stone dragon that looked almost real. The kids weren’t sure if they wanted to walk under it to enter the park. After much cajoling and promising of their choice of souvenirs we finally entered the building and thus entered the park. There was so much to see and the children couldn’t decide where to go first. Since there were four children it was going to be hard to choose. Everything was so much sophisticated from the old Story Book Land I knew as a kid.

Finally we got a map and marked off what the kids definitely wanted to see in our allotted time. There was too much for one visit. We may not make everything on the list so everything was numbered as to favorites and everyone got to make their choices. Leaving the dragon behind we decided to start with the train ride through the park so we could see everything before we started to explore each display and/or ride.

After exploring as much as possible, eating lunch and then exploring the souvenir shop we headed to the car to go home. We promised the kids to come again so we could explore the rest of the park.

(Although the story is fictional, in my childhood there was a StoryBook Land and I believe it is still there today. My children grew up with it and had a great time and so did their children.)

For visually challenged reader, the image shows two lego mini-figures sitting on pavement. Batman has a ice cone and Superman has an ice lolly!

Ice Cream!!!

By Tessa Dean July 2021

Why didn’t we get toys some child screamed across the square. An adult, probably a parent is trying to hush the child to no avail. “I want a toy too! Why didn’t we get one, Mommy?”

“I don’t know sweetheart, but we can go back and ask, please stop crying. OUCH! Why did you kick me? I said we would go ask, now be quiet or I won’t take you back there.”

I looked down at my two children happily playing with their toys rather than eating their ice cream, which had begun melting. I tried to get them to gather their stuff so we could go because I didn’t want to be confronted by the mother of the screaming child.

They arrived before we had a chance to get away so I listened to the conversation with the store’s owner. “Why didn’t my child get a toy like those two right after us?” she asked, while holding onto her screaming child.

“I am sorry ma’am, but the sign says that we are having a promotion and every tenth child will get a toy. Since there were two of them I had to give them each one and now I start counting kids again until I hit ten again.”

I turned to the store owner and said, “She is right and that isn’t fair to her child. Give them a toy and if you don’t have enough after that for all the kids in line I suggest you stop giving them out at all. This is no way to run a business.”

“Are you crazy?” she shouted at the store’s owner. “You can’t give toys to only a few children. That is not fair. I demand a toy for my child.” She was past being polite as that answer would anger any parent and I as the receiver of the toys felt bad for that child. I couldn’t take them away from my children though or they would all be crying. I turned to the woman and apologized and told her that I agreed wholeheartedly with her. I could take them from my children, but I couldn’t see having three crying children.

The owner was about to argue, but by now more of the parents in the area were listening to the shouting and he threw up his hands in disgust. “Fine, here is your toy, now take that crying brat away from here, you’re ruining my business.”

Murmuring started behind them and the rest of the people in line all left telling everyone behind them what was going on. The perplexed owner stood there watching his line of customers and their children leave. It was plain from his expression that he didn’t believe what just happened.

Whee!!!!

By Tessa Dean July 2021

They pushed the car as far back on the hill as far as they could and then several of the guys pushed it forward to the edge and watched as the car slid over and down the hill as fast as possible. The guys loved it.

Now the girls just looked at them like they were crazy. “Give me one of those tubes,” Nancy said to Marty. “I want to go home in one piece thank you very much.” She climbed on and slid down the hill on the tube. The rest of the girls followed her.

The Ring Part 7 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5, Part 6)

By Tessa Dean July 2021

Eileen rubbed the back of her neck and then unbuttoned the top button of her shirt. She bit her lip. Finally Kyle couldn’t stand it any longer. “What are you doing Eileen? Have you changed your mind or what? If you don’t speed up a little bit we are going to be late. Sarah said to come at 8 PM.”

“Is this a smart thing to do Kyle? I admit I am a little bit afraid now. I thought he was just a man who liked watching women, but that report is quite detailed and he is not a simple woman watcher. I don’t know if I can go through with getting him thrown in jail or at least out of the university. What if he comes after me if they don’t put him in jail?”

“You know I can’t help you with that one. I will support you in whatever you choose to do, but I can’t make the decision for you. Maybe the Callans will have some ideas on what you should do. They are older than us. Unless you want to call and cancel let’s get a move on here.”

Eileen sped up and pulled over in front of the Callan’s house. There was a light in one of the bedroom windows which probably meant they were trying to put the twins to bed or maybe one or both of them had woken up. Eileen felt like she was intruding. Why did she think this was a great idea?

Kyle stepped out of his side of the car. Eileen was chewing on her lip, but she stepped out of the driver’s side. They walked up to the front of the house and rang the doorbell. A dog barked. Eileen glanced at Kyle. She was afraid of dogs. The door opened and she hung back behind Kyle as the dog glanced out the glass screen door at them still barking. Eileen was aghast. You would think it was a huge dog from her expression, but he was kind of cute. He was a small dog dressed in a shirt with a “Superman” logo on it. The door opened suddenly and he came out to sniff them. Eileen whimpered and hid behind Kyle. “I’m sorry sir, but she’s afraid of dogs, all dogs.”

Scott Callan apologized and pulled the dog back into the house. He yelled to his wife, Sarah, that he was taking the two of them into the back yard til she was ready to join them, but not to bring out the dog as Eileen is afraid of them. “I’m sorry, but my wife is putting the twins to bed. They had a long day. Taking pictures of two-year olds is hard on everyone. I am Scott Callan and you met my wife Sarah earlier although I understand that one of you works at the restaurant with her.”

“I do,” Eileen managed. “I’m Eileen Weatherby and this is my fiancé Kyle Sanderson. I am sorry if we are bothering you, but I thought this was a good idea at first.”

“When Sarah comes out you can tell us what is on your mind and we can go from there. From the little she was able to tell me it sounds rather serious and I think you need to do something about it, but that is your decision alone. We’ll help in any way we can.”

**********100 words Friday Fictioneers**********

They walked through the gate into the back yard and were met, by an old van that looked like it was growing there. Kyle and Eileen both stopped suddenly and stared at the van. “Most people have the same reaction,” Scott said. “It was an old van that the previous owners had. I was going to haul it away when we moved in, but it is kind of an attention grabber and so I just held on to it. The weeds continue to grow around it. At the rate it is going, it will be completely covered in several years.”

*********************

Scott led them over to the picnic table and Sarah came out with a tray of ice tea. I thought you might be thirsty.” She handed out glasses to everyone and then took a seat by Scott on the other side of the table. “Eileen tell Scott what you told me. This sounds very important and possibly dangerous for you and perhaps some other young women there at the university.”

“I am a little bit scared now that I read that whole report on this professor at our university here in Angel’s Cove. He has been stalking me although I didn’t let on to him that I knew it. He is very popular with the female population and we all know him as being a bachelor. He is always staring at my butt, boobs and legs and when I am sitting at a desk I can see him trying to twist around to look up under my desk to see if my legs are open when I wear a skirt. And then the other day when Kyle proposed to me and that was actually funny rather than romantic, but it is typical Kyle. Anyhow he ended up proposing in front of this carved wooden sculputure which is possibly a man, I am not sure, but the storm was coming quick and I guess he wanted to propose then rather than waiting for a better time and place, but I noticed the professor back there in the woods behind it and he was staring at my skirt which was whipping around in the wind. I tried to hold it down, but wasn’t doing a great job. I had on sexy panties and I know he got a glimpse of them at least once. Once Kyle finished proposing we took off running for his car and my skirt was blowing wildly, I couldn’t hold it down any longer.

I try to stay away from him typically, but he gave me a big red zero on my final exam and I know I didn’t deserve a zero. I am a straight-A student. I was trying to figure out what to do about it when I got the idea that maybe this jerk had a wife or something back home, wherever that was and decided to do one of those background checks. What I found scared me silly. He was married, but was accused of beating and killing his wife, but it couldn’t be proven so he was let go. Then there was a list of instances where he was accused by female students of either stalking them or beating them if they chose to go out with him. Nothing was ever proven as none of the women would press charges. He just kept changing schools. Now he is here and I am definitely on his radar. I have to get this grade changed which means going to him and he will probably offer to change it if I go out with him. Well I can’t let that happen. A beating and/or death is not in my future if I can help it. And he knows I am engaged.

“Wow,” Scott said and glanced at Sara. “I understand you want to print out the report and do something, but now you are getting second thoughts. I can’t say I blame you. He sounds like a very dangerous man. How about we print out the report to begin with. I want to see this. Which one did you use?”

“I used the number one background site especially for criminal backgrounds. I wasn’t expecting what I got back though.”

“Good choice. It is probably the one most people choose. Let’s go to my den where my computer is. You can sign in and print out your report. We will make several copies just in case. After I read it I will tell you my thoughts.”

Kittens!

By Tessa Dean June 2021

We had a beautiful white cat. She had these gorgeous blue eyes and a kink on the end of her tail. Since she adopted us we had no idea if the kink was a fight or genetic. One day we found out she was pregnant. The kids were almost hysterical in their excitement.

One day she disappeared. We were worried because we knew her time was near, but we couldn’t find her. We did our best to explain her disappearance to the kids although we didn’t know the real reason why she went missing.

We put food outside, her usual fare, although she rather preferred catching her own food, but being pregnant put a halt to that for a the time being. We hoped she was ok and my now ex-husband converted a play shed we had made for the kids into a cat home with a door flap so they could come and go if they every showed up. It was a little house with pegs to hang things on and shelves for their outside toys, etc.

Finally one day she obviously was trying to bring the kittens home. She had them somewhere else and we looked outside thankfully before throwing the door open and stepping on this tiny little kitten. We left it alone and kept peeking outside and then there were three kittens out there and we saw her trudging down the driveway from the next house up with another kitten in her mouth. Now there were 4 of them. Overnight she brought the last 2 over from the other house. We have no idea why she had them there unless she was out roaming and got caught and couldn’t get home. We stopped using that door and didn’t touch them.

One morning they were all gone again. We were concerned, but not a lot we could do. I got ready for work and went to leave and realized she had moved them off the step and underneath my car. Thank God I saw them and didn’t drive over them. I guess she wanted them out of the open air porch and thought they would be better protected under the car. Bad idea, but she didn’t know any better. So my husband had to try and get them out from under my car so I could go to work. We knew there were six or at least she only brought home six. Now we had touched them and we hoped that wouldn’t be a problem. Animals are finicky especially with their young. He placed them in the playhouse on cushions and for a while she stayed there with them. There were 3 pure white ones like her and 3 tabby cats, one orange, one gray and one black with barely discernable stripes. And once they were up and walking around we saw they all had the kink in their tails so it was genetic. As they got older they started to wander further and further away and then the white ones were gone. As we drove around the neighborhood we saw them because you couldn’t miss the kink in their tails. The tabbies hung around and we had to find them and the mother homes as we were selling the house. The white ones had found homes in the neighborhood so we left them alone.

Our other experience with pets and their babies was a dog that gave birth to 10 puppies. Boy was that a treat and finding them all homes was rough. We kept one of them and the mother. She was fixed right after that. No more puppies.

An FYI on my current writing

I started my very first novel in July 2020 and then rewrote it for November 2020 NANOWRIMO. Now I have gone through the beta readers and am editing it prior to getting a professional edit. I will not be publishing this book for you to buy, but once done it will be published on this blog in its entirety. This one novel has now become a series. I created a fictional small town and these will be their mysteries and murders.

Books two and three are partially started and that is what you have been reading on here although these serial prompts (as I call them) are not the total story and may change while actually doing the full writing for the book. You are seeing bits of it. They will also be published on this blog eventually.

I want people to enjoy my writing, but regular publishing, both traditional and Indie, aren’t for me right now due to financial considerations. BUT I still want people to enjoy them.

These two serial prompts are brought about by:

“The three things challenge”

Rochelle’s “Friday Fictioneers”

Sadje’s “What Do You See?” Look under categories

Reena”s “Exploration Challenge”

Sammi’s “Weekend Writing Prompt”

New to Writing – #WritePhoto

These are just some of the prompts I follow (and can use for these stories), but not all of them can be used in my current work. Check them out if you like writing to prompts. These are some of my favorites, but my favorites are not limited to these particular ones. There are so many prompt sites out there, but I can’t write for them all sadly, especially if I want to write books too. I have about 8 books planned for this series so far. Some of them are old NANOWRIMO books I never finished or did anything with and some like books two and three are made from serial prompts. And actually book one uses many of my older serial prompts put together to form the story.

And for anyone looking for horror prompts, my friend Laura Nettles has 100 of them on her blog.

Flipping Houses – Ooops

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Joey and Willy picked up this house for $1.00. All they had to do was move it to another location. Willy told Joey it wouldn’t be a problem. His brother, Mac, could move the house for them. He’s a house mover he told Joey.

Mac arrives at the house and finally manages to get the house up on his truck. He never thought to ask the guys where he had to move it to so when they pointed at the skyscrapers, he was puzzled. On one side of the house was a community and on one side was all skyscrapers.

“Wait,” he said puzzled. “Are you telling me this house has to go through those skyscrapers to the other side of the city?”

Both guys just nodded lazily, grinning.

‘How am I supposed to get to the other side?”

“There’s a large park down the center of the skyscrapers. Just make it through the first tight street and enter the park and then exit at the end and go through that last tight street and there’s a piece of land on the other side waiting for it. We got it for a $1.00, all we have to do is move it. Cool, don’t you think?”

Mac shook his head. “This ain’t going to work fellas. I’m not sure I can get the house through the first set of skyscrapers even. What about the traffic lights and wires? Do you have permits to drive through there and then through a park and then through another set of skyscrapers?”

Willy asks, “What do need with all of that? Just drive through it. I seen you do it hunnerts of times.”

“Look guys, it ain’t that easy. You just can’t drive it through there.” He turned away, shaking his head. “I am going to get dinner while you guys figure this out.”

Willy left his truck and walked across the street to a restaurant to get dinner. Suddenly there was a ruckus going on outside. He felt his pockets and said, “Damn, I left the keys in the truck. I bet those fools tried to move it themselves.”

Sure enough Joey and Willy had drove off and as they were passing through the skyscrapers they took down the first set of traffic lights and wires and then hit the park with the house half off the truck. They kept driving until the house was all the way off of the truck and stuck with one side buried in the park and the other end up in the air. They didn’t stop either. They kept on driving pulling whatever happened to remain attached to the truck behind it.

Everyone was talking about these two crazy guys in the truck, but Mac stayed quiet. This was all gonna come back on him and his boss was gonna kill him.

Twenty Years Later

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Kara and Sonny were sailing slowly past the Eiffel Tower. They shared a kiss, one full of love and remembrance.

They reminisced about this very same trip taken 20 years ago on their honeymoon. They decided to celebrate their 20th anniversary by taking the very same trip. Their feelings today even stronger than they were 20 years ago.

“Sonny do you remember what I said to you on our honeymoon trip 20 years ago?” Kara asks him shyly and wondering what his response would be.

“Certainly, honey, you told me we were expecting our first child. Wait, are you telling me you are pregnant again? And at your age? I thought we were done with having more children.”

“Well, Sonny, God sees it another way. And yes, we are pregnant again. I am 8 weeks along. The doctor has already told me that it will be harder now at my age, but not impossible. A lot of his patients are my age and are giving birth to perfectly healthy babies. I can hardly wait.”

“Kara, my love, I am excited and can hardly wait myself. I know we wanted another child, but it didn’t look like it was going to happen and now, our 2nd honeymoon, you say the exact same words. What a blessing it is.”

Oh Grandma, Where are You?

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Amelia looked at the last line of her long list of nursing homes. The list was just for her state because she didn’t think her mother would go too far away from home, but now she was on the last home and no sign of her Grandmother. She had recent pictures in case her Mother had changed her name and so far no one had seen her or had her registered at that nursing home.

Amelia was crying now. She missed her Grandmother who she considered her real mother rather than that whimpering, whiny drunk who gave birth to her. If she found her, unless there was a medical reason she needed to be there, she was bringing her home to live with her.

She got her tissue out and dried her eyes. She wanted to be professional so they would listen to her if her Grandma happened to be there. Please God she prayed. Let Grandma be here.

Amelia approached the southern looking mansion and spotted the small pond with water lilies floating on it. How pretty, she thought. She looked around her. The place looked nice. Would her Mother pay this much for her Mother to live in a nice home like this? Her Mother had money, but she never spent it on her or her Mother. She drank her money away. Probably some drug usage as well.

Amelia walked towards the beautiful white double door entrance. She didn’t know if she should knock or just walk in. She was pretty sure it was a nursing home so she should just walk in.

Opening the door she was met by a woman, who she knew was older than she looked. She looked good for her age. She was in good shape and probably worked out. If she lived here this place must be quite expensive because she was also nicely dressed.

Amelia was stuck on what to say at first. She just couldn’t imagine her Grandma living here, although it was a beautiful place.

“May I help you young lady?” The woman had a sheaf of papers in her hand and was set to look through them.

Amelia began to cry. She tried to talk, but the tears were coming harder and faster. She had vowed not to do this, but this was her last chance for the most part without hiring a private detective.

The woman put an around her and led her over to a plush couch. She sat down next to her with her arm still around her. “What’s wrong honey?”

Amelia worked to pull herself together. She started her spiel. She had used it so many times she knew it by heart. She reached in her purse and pulled out her pictures and before she could say a thing, the woman said, “Ruth? Why do you have pictures of Ruth?”

Amelia said, “You know her? She is my grandmother and I have searched this whole state for her.”

“Yes honey, Ruth lives here and has for many years now. Why didn’t you know that?”

“Because my no-good, drunk of a Mother hid her Mother from me. Ruth raised me when my Mother couldn’t. My Mother hated to be reminded of it so she sent her away. She refused to tell me where and I have searched this whole state looking for her in places like this. If she isn’t medically dependent on living here I want to bring her home to live with me.”

“Well, I am gathering you must be the Amelia she always talks about. She is medically fine and will be delighted to see you again I am sure. Come with me, she is on the veranda with Maisie. Maisie will miss her, but maybe you can bring her up to see Maisie occasionally for a visit.”

“Oh I would do anything for my Grandma. She raised me right.”

“Come this way, child.” Amelia put on a happy face and followed the woman to the veranda on the side of the house. There was her Grandma and she looked great. This place was wonderful for her. She hoped she would want to leave to live with her.

“Amelia? Amelia is that you child?” Ruth raised herself up and walked over to meet them. She put her arms around Amelia and hugged her tight. “I never thought I would see you again. Rhonda made sure I was far away although she did put me in a decent place.”

“Oh Grandma I am so happy to see you. I have been driving all over the state looking for you. I want to bring you home to live with me. I have a nice three bedroom house and you would even have your own bathroom. All the rooms have their own bathrooms so you could choose whichever one you wanted. Will you come live with me? I promise to bring you to see Maisie almost every weekend for a day or if they rent out rooms occasionally I could rent you a room for the weekend and you could stay here all weekend. What do you think?”

“I would love to live with you doll and you are such a nice Granddaughter to think of letting me still see Maisie. Yes they keep guest rooms for just that reason. You could drop me off and then pick my up on Sunday.

Amelia hugged Grandma and then they headed to Grandma’s room to pack. Maisie came along to help. The staff brought in some boxes and told her to just pack what she absolutely needed right now and then she could pick up the rest of her things on the next trip when she came to visit with Maisie.
