**********Kimberley’s Point of View**********

Kimberley was still trying to absorb the situation involving her sister Cassie. Peter and his mom had arrived by the time Kimberley and Cassie’s mom, Janet Jones, got home from work at quarter after midnight last night. Peter tried to explain exactly what he had seen to Mrs. Jones. Cassie was still not home and she should have been home from work by 10:30 at the latest. Her mom was in shock. At first she went totally silent and didn’t move, even to sit down. Her daughter was in danger and that was all she was able to understand at that point. She licked her lips and stared at Peter as if he could produce her at will. She glanced around, but not really seeing them.

“I don’t understand,” she said after looking at each of them. “Cassie is never late. Cassie wouldn’t go anywhere without letting us know.”

“Mom that is what Peter is trying to tell us. He called me earlier to tell me what he saw and how he had tried to follow the van that she had been shoved into by that miserable rat she knew as Wayne. She was right to worry about him. She canceled the date because she was positive he was up to no good and she really thought he was the one who had sent that drugged candy through the post office. Thankfully that situation didn’t end up as bad as it could have. I have thought about the situation plenty, but I don’t ever remember her talking about where he lived or anything that might help us. That is why we thought his suggestion to meet him at the restaurant was a good one since she would drive herself there and back and not get into what was essentially a stranger’s car. However, I did not see this coming.”

Peter was pacing around the living room, “Look,” he said to Mrs. Jones, continuing to pace, “You have to call the police and somehow convince them that Cassie wouldn’t just disappear. She was always responsible and I am an eye witness although I wish I hadn’t had that accident which prevented me from seeing where they turned. I just know they were on Grant Street and had their left turn signal on although that doesn’t mean they turned left, of course.”

***

Kimberley finally persuaded her mother to call the police. Her mother just couldn’t believe this was happening and kept coming up with reasons why Cassie wasn’t home yet. Everyone that knew Cassie, knew that she was reliable and she certainly wouldn’t just not come home without telling someone. Plus there was Peter’s eyewitness account. He may be immature at times, but he was adamant that he loved Cassie and that she had been kidnapped.

“Do you have a picture of your daughter, Mrs. Jones?” The officer had listened to a very jumbled account of what had happened and even contacted the officer who had been the one to talk to Peter at the accident scene. They had his notes and noted that he didn’t appear to have been drinking so they felt it was a reliable account. The officer dispatched to the restaurant reported that the car was still in the parking lot. They put a boot on it in the hopes that the kidnappers wouldn’t try to remove it. Someone was set out to keep an eye on the car for now just in case they did decide to come back for it.

Peter wasn’t sure of the numbers of the houses where he had the accident, but that was all in the police report. There was the possibility that the vehicle didn’t belong to the person living in that house so finding it with just a description of an old gray van was not going to help much. Peter said it all happened so fast he didn’t have time to think about the license plate number.

“Did she have a cell phone, Mrs. Jones? If she does and it is turned on we might be able to track her by GPS. Sometimes kidnappers don’t think about that.” Mrs. Jones gave them her daughter’s cell phone number. They had tried to call it and it was going right into voice mail so it was probably turned off or the battery was dead.

“If you can think of anything that might help the investigation please call us and if we find something we’ll let you know. I don’t think I have to tell you that time is of the essence.”

***

The next morning looking down into the flower bed, Kimberley saw the child-size set of rabbit glasses. They had been Cassie’s favorites as a child and when their little sister, Margaret arrived, Cassie offered them to her once she became a toddler and she loved them too. Kimberley picked them up and started crying again. This can’t be happening, she shudders just thinking about Cassie being in that position due to that monster who had abducted her.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

“I can just imagine Cassie now gearing up for a big row about me not calling her or returning her calls often enough. She seems the type to harp on a subject. Although she won’t be in any condition to fight about anything right away,” Wayne tells his two life-long friends, Rocky and Butch. He unconsciously fingers the bottle again.

**********Cassie’s Point of View**********

“Hey Kimberley come look at this. I don’t remember that strange table being in the park a few weeks ago when I was over there. From its proximity, I would have thought we would have noticed it either from this window or coming in and out of the apartment.”

Kimberley was struggling to remember if she had noticed it before or not. It sure was a strange table. “Do you think someone might be having some kind of party over there? I would expect a picnic table in the woods though.

How Deep is it?

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Ron had been told by some of his friends who hiked a lot that there was a nice area up on Walden Manor property. The path approached a large stone embankment that suddenly dropped off right in front of you. No one seemed to know if it was the cement remnants of an old bridge or not. However suddenly the cement dropped off and overlooked a body of water that was deep and dark. It was said to be bottomless there, but in reality there had to be a bottom of some sort although it could be much deeper than anyone could imagine.

Ron decided to make the trip to the area and see this spot everyone talked about. He and a few of his buddies would hike up looking for an area to camp in for the night. If it suddenly dropped off he didn’t want to be up there hiking in the dark so they would camp before they got there and then in the morning resume the trip to the drop-off spot. He didn’t think he would try to jump into the water as he had heard rumors of those who tried to jump into the water and never came back up. Just seeing it would be enough for him.

Watch Out For Forest Fires

By Tessa Dean February 2021

Sue and Christopher were hiking slowly through the woods and looking with disappointment at the burned husks of trees. The fire had been many years ago as there was plenty of lush green trees and bushes scattered among the burnt out areas.

When they arrived at the warden’s office there was an officer who was appointed to oversee the area and point out ways to hike safely and with caution in order to try and avoid another fire like that one.

However he also explained that wildfires are a natural part of many environments. They are nature’s way of clearing out the dead litter on forest floors allowing important nutrients to return to the soil. Fires also play an important role in the reproduction of some plants. That is why they would see so much lush overgrowth in the area where the fire had been. Nature has a way of taking care of its own.

Jenny and Josh were approaching a huge rock along the path they were hiking on. The path curved around the rock and you couldn’t see what was behind it. The path was also lined with trees which blocked their view on the sides. They had been told that mountain lions and black bears lived in the area and they wanted a clear view of the path.

The rock was considered to be the home of the guardian of the area. Did the guardian live behind it everyone wondered? Perhaps he lived on top of it. No one had been brave enough to follow the path around the back of the monstrous sized rock to find out.

Jenny and Josh weren’t far away now. Should they take the chance and try going around the rock or not? “Let’s take a break and think about it. Maybe eat something,” Josh said.

“Josh what about the smell of food? Will it bring the bears and mountain lions out to attack us?

“I didn’t think of that. I am curious about what is further along that path, but the stories that are being told aren’t good omens for it to be a good idea.”

“Josh, I can live without finding out about guardians, mountain lions and black bears. Let’s just turn around and find somewhere else to camp tonight.”

Taking one last look, they turned around and headed back along the trail to find a more open area where they could spot the enemy if there was one.

Thursday photo prompt: Returning #writephoto

Prompt word: Returning

Prompt Photo:

Every morning Jane watched her children as they trekked off down the mountain side to the small school at the base of the mountain where their small house was perched. She was always afraid that one of the small ones would fall and get hurt so she always made sure they made it down the side safely to the small school that served for all 12 grades and kindergarten for this region.

Every afternoon she was there waiting for them to return home and watched as they made the dangerous trek back up again. If her health had been better she would walk down with them and make the trip twice a day, but she had to be content that her oldest children would look after the younger ones.
