Missed the Concert and Needing a New Tire

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Sarah was taking her twin teenage sons, Aiden and Ethan, to a concert at the high school. The boys were fighting in the back seat. Sarah turned to yell at them.

“Stop it, you two, or we’re going home.”

There was a loud thump, and the car careened across the road to the median strip.

Sarah told the boys to stay in the car as there was a lot of traffic. She got out and looked at the tire. There was no way Sarah could save that one, and she had no spare tire. She would need a new tire.

The Birthday Party Part 2 (here is part 1)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Thomas tore the rented tux off, changed into his jeans and tee shirt, and dashed over to the shop to return it. He told the older woman at the desk the story of why he was returning it and she said that she would return the fee he paid to rent it as she also believed in family being important and she was happy that his girlfriend was so understanding.

Thomas went home and told his friends that Ginny was actually going to attend Anthony’s first birthday party instead of insisting they go to this fancy charity affair that she had planned on and he had just returned the tux to the shop. His friends began teasing him that she was just saying that and that she would most likely ask one of them to take her to the charity affair instead.

Thomas’s hopes were slightly dashed. Would she do that to him? She seemed sincere when she said it was ok with her and that she would be honored to go to the birthday party. Now Thomas had to wait and see what Ginny would actually do tomorrow night. Maybe he should call and let her know what time he would be picking her up for the party and see what she says. No, he had to trust her. She seemed sincere and he would wait and see whether she called him to find out what time he would pick her up and go from there. He wanted to trust her, despite what his friends said.

Linda G Hill’s Rules:

Hey there! Welcome to the 8th annual Just Jot it January challenge! This year is going to be far simpler than the last couple of years. One prompt per day, link to that post, that’s it. Details below.

But why should you participate in this challenge? To keep the ol’ fingers warm and meet up with an awesome blogging community, that’s why! Just Jot it January, AKA JusJoJan, is a challenge to write a post every day of the month of January. We’ve grown from a handful of participants in 2014 to close to fifty for the past couple of years. Let’s see if we can make it to sixty this year!

Here are the JusJoJan Rules:

If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure.

Here are the simple JusJoJan Rules:

1. Just Jot It January starts January 1st, but it’s never too late to join in! Here, we run on the honour system; the “jot it” part of JusJoJan means that anything you jot down, anywhere (it doesn’t have to be a post, it can even be a grocery list), counts as a “jot.” If it makes it to your blog that day, great! If it waits a week to get from a sticky note to your screen, no problem!

2. I’ll post prompts at 2am my time (GMT -5). The prompt will be the word in quotation marks in the title of my 2am post. You don’t have to follow the prompt every day, but that will be where you leave your link for others to see. You’ll get a prompt for every day except Wednesday, when the prompt is simply my One-Liner Wednesday and on Saturday, when your prompt will be the Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS, which will appear at about 9:30am Friday. Each prompt post will include the rules.

2 a) The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!

7What’s the most embarassing position you have ever been stuck in? Stood up in the ocean and the weight of the waves pulled my top down over my huge pregnant belly so my whole upper body was exposed.

18You have just woken up …. the first thing you do is? PEE!!!

#JusJoJan prompt the 12th – “Sing”

**********

I can’t sing. I can’t carry a tune to save my life. I have no middle register. It is either high or low, no normal in the middle range. Singing embarrasses me so much. My ex-husband had a great singing voice and he was in the schools musicals. We didn’t go to the same school so I couldn’t be part of them in any way, but I went to every rehearsal and knew every part and could have been a stand-in if necessary except for the singing parts of course. I knew all the words though to both the play and the songs.

Non-Fiction Mostly (just a few minor changes)

The letter and a Brand New Car

By Tessa Dean January 2021

I had been laid off from my job. Unemployment had paid for me to take some minor business courses that would allow me to start a business rather than look for work. My husband and I had decided to open a store. We joined a wholesale website and received catalogs of items we could order at wholesale prices. We decided eventually we would open a store, but we were going to start by selling at a flea market and I would work on putting a catalog up on a website. He decided since he was still working this would be mainly my business with his help when needed.

One night I was working hard at adding pictures to the website and had a question for him about the new car he had bought me that morning. I padded downstairs, barefoot as always, and entered the family room where he had his computer. He didn’t hear me. I stared, speechless. He was holding a large letter, a sheet of white paper with a large heart and across it was written “I love you and miss you so much, M.”

I didn’t utter a sound and just then across his computer screen came the same words and heart and she signed her name. “When can we get together again,” she wrote.

Just then he realized I was there and had seen everything. I didn’t say a word and headed for the upstairs bedroom where my office was. I sat down and just started to work. I didn’t know what to do. This explained the new car which I never got to choose before. I would drive it, but never choose it. He even encouraged me to get the more expensive model I wanted.

About 15 minutes later he came upstairs and sat on the bed and said, ” I just wanted to take my shoes off.” The man never brought his shoes upstairs. She had probably told him that he should check to make sure I wasn’t have a mental breakdown or committing suicide or whatever. I ignored him and continued to work. He sat there and finally went downstairs again.

Days went by and I didn’t say a word. However the day he came home from his nighttime job and found the whole house lit up, he knew the shit was about to hit the fan.

I asked him what he planned on doing. Were we getting a divorce or what? He assured me that no, he didn’t want a divorce and to break up our family. We had 3 children and the youngest was only 12 years old. I knew he was full of it, but figured I would wait and see.

A couple of days later he came home and he said he was sorry, but her husband had just found out and he wanted to be with her.

He said I could divorce him for adultery, but I said no, I wanted nothing to do with it. If you want a divorce than you would have to do the filing. We went to a divorce center because we didn’t have money for lawyers and filled out forms and they typed the legal documents up. We paid the court fee and it was over.

I told him that I couldn’t afford that fancy car and it was all his. The dealer had screwed up and put it in his name and not mine. Idiot! I also asked him why he did something so stupid. Someone had to pay for that car and it wasn’t going to be me. I took the old, paid off station wagon and my oldest daughter and I got an apartment to share.

I was relieved as I wanted a divorce, but couldn’t bring myself to be the bad guy. I wasn’t and she’s a liar and a bitch and he has spent the last 21 years with her and she bosses him around like he always bossed me around. I thanked her for taking him off of my hands and wished them good riddance.

I did tell the kids not to blame it all on him and her. We were both responsible for the break up.

The second letter came from me and I poured out all of my aggravation and pain as to what he had actually done. Not a good idea and the kids didn’t need all the details, but I felt better.

Now he doesn’t get away with telling me what to do. He still tries, but that ship sailed. The 12 year old is 33 years old now, but took his sister’s having a baby while in high school to heart and was very careful. He is still childless.

My oldest grandson could make me a great grandma at anytime, but hasn’t. He just got discharged out of the Marine Corp.

Sunday Writing Prompt – 10th January – Getting Lucky

Sunday Writing Prompt – 10th January – Getting Lucky

This week write your response to the expression ‘Getting Lucky”.
What circumstances in your life would give rise to you feeling lucky, or getting lucky?
Go have fun and leave a link to your writing in the comments section below.

**********

My ex-husband and I had decided that we wanted to have three children and his personal request was that the first one be a boy. Well as luck would have it, child number one was a girl. The time came to start trying for child number two and again his one wish was that it was a boy. As luck would have it again, we had a second daughter. Time had run out and he was getting out of the military so we had to put the third child on hold.

Years passed and we were getting older. We were watching the movie “Micki and Maud” and the ending was filled with a lot of babies and we started to think about that third child. It wasn’t an ideal time, but I was almost 30 and didn’t want any more children after I turned 30 (well actually I guess that would be 31). 30 was my cutoff date. We were both really thinking that we wanted to have that third child. It had always been our plan to have three children.

Our marriage was pretty rocky and sex wasn’t often so the chances of me getting pregnant were kind of slim. But as luck would have it I got pregnant on our very first try. I knew the exact date of conception obviously since we hardly had sex and I looked at the calendar and said it is possible. Just one try and BINGO, I hit the jackpot. I was pregnant. Now again he wanted a boy. I told him no matter what the sex this was our last child period. We didn’t find out the sex until the day I pushed that baby out. I was hoping for another girl and had everything washed and ready for another one. That was all we seemed to have.

So the day came and I pushed and there was silence until the staff started to sing “Happy Birthday.” I assumed it was another girl. Well my husband was kind of speechless because lo and behold it was a BOY this time. I guess it just took waiting long enough for those boys to wake up and start swimming. We went home and packed up all the little girl clothes and went shopping for boy clothes. It was just a few months shy of my 31st birthday.
