The Birthday Party Part 5 (Part 1Part 2Part 3, Part 4)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Wayne came to the door to see what was going on between Thomas and Joseph. He and Jimmy had all been at Joseph’s house watching the daily boxing workout that they hoped was making their bodies more toned. Although watching the show and doing the workout were two different things. In order to actually tone their bodies they would have to do the exercises they were watching. None of them seemed to get that point.

Wayne sees Joseph flat on his back and Thomas is poking him with each word of his threat. Wayne called Jimmy over to watch the action as if it were a comedy routine. They both were laughing. Neither was listening to the words that Thomas was saying to Joseph so neither of them realized he was talking about them all.

Thomas said he was sick of all the nonsense and jokes they liked to pull on each other. He didn’t find them funny and this last one had really hurt. Ginny was important to him and just because they didn’t have girlfriends didn’t mean they could just make fun of him and try to mess up his relationship. He was serious about Ginny and had to admit to himself that after tonight he was falling in love with her and he could see what a wonderful mother she would be to their children.

Thomas stopped poking Joseph and stood up and glanced at the other two. He didn’t know if they were in on this last prank Joseph had pulled, but they were part of all the other ones. It was time to look for new friends. Ones that had girlfriends so they could do things together occasionally if Ginny was agreeable.

Thomas looked at all three of them standing there watching him and said, “I have had it with all the pranks and childish behavior. What Joseph did tonight, with or without you, was the final straw. We are no longer friends. Stay out of Ginny and my lives.” He turned on his heel and left.

The three boys behind him were still laughing, while Joseph was rubbing his rib cage from all the poking. “What’s up with him?” Wayne and Jimmy asked. Joseph looked away and didn’t answer. He hadn’t told them what he had done. It was his prank and because of him Thomas wouldn’t be friends with any of them. He knew it wasn’t fair, but if he told them he might lose all of his friends. As long as Thomas didn’t say anything else, no one had to know what happened.

“It’s nothing man. Just a little prank I pulled on Thomas and he got seriously mad about it. It will probably blow over eventually. Just stay away from him for now. Plus I think we need to tone down those pranks we are always pulling. Thomas was right about one thing, sometimes they do hurt someone.”

Death Notices Necessary

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Betty had a tenacious grip on her boyfriend. She was afraid he would find someone else. She had to know where and when he was going to be at all times. Heaven help him if something held him up, making him miss a date with her. There were no acceptable excuses.

The day John’s mother died, he was late for dinner. She refused to accept his excuse until he brought the death notice.

The Birthday Party Part 4 (Part 1Part 2, Part 3)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Thomas proudly watched Ginny as she sat on the floor and played with his brother Anthony and his new toys. He had been so quick to doubt her when his friends told him things about her. However, here she was playing with his little brother and she looked absolutely beautiful in her soft pink sweater that outlined her perky breasts. Breasts that he knew were real and not stuffed. He blushed a little as that thought crossed his mind as if anyone else knew what he was thinking.

Thomas thought about his friends. They set him up to be upset with Ginny. Lied to him about her asking them to go to the charity ball with them rather than come to Anthony’s party. He was embarrassed over his thoughts. How could he think that Ginny would do that to him. She was a sweet girl. His friends were probably jealous that he had lucked out and that Ginny had chosen him to be her boyfriend.

His thoughts returned to Joseph. Joseph had said that Ginny had asked him and that he said no and that Wayne had said yes. Wayne probably knew nothing about the whole situation. Joseph seemed to be the one starting the trouble here and that he would use our other friends to make the situation worse just showed how useless he was as a friend. He didn’t want friends like that.

Thomas glanced at Ginny who was now rocking Anthony to sleep. She looked so natural with a baby in her arms. Maybe one day she would be rocking their kids to sleep. His mom came and got Anthony to take him to bed. Ginny got up and came over to where he was sitting on the couch and had been watching them.

“He’s adorable. I want to have a little boy like that one day and a little girl too,” she said. Thomas smiled at her and hugged her close.

***

After Ginny left, Thomas headed out to Joseph’s house. When Joseph opened the door, Thomas pushed him hard and he landed flat on his back. He used his finger to poke him to get his message across. “I don’t ever want to see you around me again. You are not my friend. You tried to start something between Ginny and I and I don’t appreciate it. Ginny is my girlfriend, got it?

The Birthday Party Part 3 (Part 1, Part 2)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

A day ago, he was sure that Ginny would say no to going to Anthony’s party instead of the fancy affair, and when he asked her, she hadn’t dashed his hopes and said no right off the bat. He hoped she wasn’t teasing him, but his friends seemed to think that she was just putting him on and that she was planning on asking one of them to take her to the fancy affair in his place.

The doldrums settled in, and he became thoughtful. How well did he know Ginny? They had met early in the year, and a few months later, they became boyfriend and girlfriend officially. He didn’t know what her expectations were for their relationship as he had never asked. He usually asked her where she wanted to go on a date, and she usually replied, “Anywhere is fine with me.” She had been planning the date to the charity ball for a few months, and so when he asked her about going to the birthday party tomorrow instead, he was surprised she didn’t say no right off the bat.

He didn’t want to appear weak, so he didn’t keep asking her if she was sure about giving up the charity ball. He would call tomorrow and tell her what time he would pick her up for the party.

He changed for bed and looked in his closet to see which of his jeans were suitable for the birthday party. They weren’t going anywhere fancy, but he didn’t want to look bad. She was a fine-looking woman, and so he wanted to look nice without his family thinking he was becoming too fancy for them. He wondered what she would wear. He didn’t want his family thinking she was his mistress, and this was the first time they would be meeting her. She always dressed fine in the past, but hopefully, she would tone it down for tomorrow.

Just before he went to bed, his friend Joseph called and said, “I have some bad news for you, man. Ginny just called and asked me to take her to the charity ball tomorrow night.”

“What? Are you kidding me, man?”

“No, I’m not kidding. I wouldn’t do that to you, man. I said no, but I heard that Wayne told her yes.”

Thomas was dazed. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. His whole outlook on their relationship just changed within minutes. He thanked Joseph for having his back and went to bed.

Thankfully he hadn’t told his mother that Ginny was coming yet. That would have been too embarrassing to have to tell her what happened. No one else needed to know.

The next night the party started. The family had gathered around Anthony’s high chair where he sat with his cake, and there was a commotion at the door just before they began to sing “Happy Birthday.”

Thomas waited to see who was at the door. “Oh Thomas, I am so sorry I am late,” a familiar voice said. “I hope I didn’t miss the whole party. My mom had to go to the hospital. She’s ok, but I had to bring her home and get her settled into bed before I could come over to the party.”

“Ginny?” Thomas went into the hall to greet her. She was alone and dressed for a little boy’s birthday party and not a fancy charity ball. “I am sorry about not calling you with a time to pick you up. Joseph told me he had a message for me from you, and I believed him. I am so sorry for not calling you, and I am glad your mother is ok.”

“What could Joseph possibly have to tell you about me? I haven’t talked to him or any of your friends in weeks.”

“Never mind, I think I need some new friends. You are just in time to sing “Happy Birthday.” They sang, and then he introduced Ginny around as his girlfriend.

Missed the Concert and Needing a New Tire

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Sarah was taking her twin teenage sons, Aiden and Ethan, to a concert at the high school. The boys were fighting in the back seat. Sarah turned to yell at them.

“Stop it, you two, or we’re going home.”

There was a loud thump, and the car careened across the road to the median strip.

Sarah told the boys to stay in the car as there was a lot of traffic. She got out and looked at the tire. There was no way Sarah could save that one, and she had no spare tire. She would need a new tire.

The Birthday Party Part 2 (here is part 1)

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Thomas tore the rented tux off, changed into his jeans and tee shirt, and dashed over to the shop to return it. He told the older woman at the desk the story of why he was returning it and she said that she would return the fee he paid to rent it as she also believed in family being important and she was happy that his girlfriend was so understanding.

Thomas went home and told his friends that Ginny was actually going to attend Anthony’s first birthday party instead of insisting they go to this fancy charity affair that she had planned on and he had just returned the tux to the shop. His friends began teasing him that she was just saying that and that she would most likely ask one of them to take her to the charity affair instead.

Thomas’s hopes were slightly dashed. Would she do that to him? She seemed sincere when she said it was ok with her and that she would be honored to go to the birthday party. Now Thomas had to wait and see what Ginny would actually do tomorrow night. Maybe he should call and let her know what time he would be picking her up for the party and see what she says. No, he had to trust her. She seemed sincere and he would wait and see whether she called him to find out what time he would pick her up and go from there. He wanted to trust her, despite what his friends said.

Linda G Hill’s Rules:

Hey there! Welcome to the 8th annual Just Jot it January challenge! This year is going to be far simpler than the last couple of years. One prompt per day, link to that post, that’s it. Details below.

But why should you participate in this challenge? To keep the ol’ fingers warm and meet up with an awesome blogging community, that’s why! Just Jot it January, AKA JusJoJan, is a challenge to write a post every day of the month of January. We’ve grown from a handful of participants in 2014 to close to fifty for the past couple of years. Let’s see if we can make it to sixty this year!

Here are the JusJoJan Rules:

If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure.

Here are the simple JusJoJan Rules:

1. Just Jot It January starts January 1st, but it’s never too late to join in! Here, we run on the honour system; the “jot it” part of JusJoJan means that anything you jot down, anywhere (it doesn’t have to be a post, it can even be a grocery list), counts as a “jot.” If it makes it to your blog that day, great! If it waits a week to get from a sticky note to your screen, no problem!

2. I’ll post prompts at 2am my time (GMT -5). The prompt will be the word in quotation marks in the title of my 2am post. You don’t have to follow the prompt every day, but that will be where you leave your link for others to see. You’ll get a prompt for every day except Wednesday, when the prompt is simply my One-Liner Wednesday and on Saturday, when your prompt will be the Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS, which will appear at about 9:30am Friday. Each prompt post will include the rules.

2 a) The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!

Rose Lynn’s Unexpected Trip

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Rose Lynn stared down the tracks looking for a sign that the train was arriving. She was holding her mama’s hand and excitement had her bouncing all around.

“Rose Lynn, please stop fidgeting. Stand still and wait quietly. Daddy will be here any time now.

As the time of arrival came closer the people started gathering to wait for their loved ones and there was pushing and shoving as they tried to move to the front of the line closest to where the doors would open.

Before she knew what had happened Rose Lynn’s hand was torn from her mother’s and she was pushed into the crowd of people waiting to board for the next station.

The train arrived and the doors opened, people spilling out while others shoved to get on for when the train left on its next part of the journey.

Rose Lynn didn’t see her mommy or her daddy. She was just shoved along with the crowd and before she knew the train whistle blew and the train started moving and she was on the inside with strangers and not with her parents.

She started crying as the people scrambled for seats. A nice man in a uniform who said he was the conductor asked her what was wrong.

“I can’t find my mommy and daddy. I wasn’t supposed to get on the train. Daddy was getting off of it. I’m scared.”

“What is your name young lady and I will call the station and let them know what happened and tell them what station to go to find you. I am sure your mommy and daddy are frantic right now and looking for you. I will take you to the office and you will wait there with someone to make sure you find your parents. OK?”

Rose Lynn nodded with tears running down her cheeks. “Honey, I need your name.”

“Rose Lynn Michaels,” she managed to tell him through her tears.

“Ok Rose Lynn, come with me to the front of the train and we will make that call. You will see your parents in no time as I am sure they are frantically trying to find you themselves.”

Rose Lynn followed the conductor to the front of the train and he quickly explained what happened and the call was put through to the station they had just left. Rose Lynn’s parents were already at the office and were relieved when the call came through letting them know where to go to pick her up.

When the train pulled into the station, the conductor escorted her to the office and introduced her to Sadie, one of the women who worked in the office. He told her the story and she took Rose Lynn’s hand in hers and said, “I will get you to your mommy and daddy as soon as they arrive.”

It wasn’t long before a young couple came running into the office shouting for Rose Lynn. Sadie said, “I bet that is your mommy and daddy now, honey.”

Rose Lynn turned and yelled, “Mommy and Daddy, here I am, see?”

Rosie and Wayne Michaels turned at the voice of their daughter and smiled. They gathered her into a big hug and turned to thank Sadie for watching out for their daughter. She explained that the conductor did the hard part all she did was hold her hand for a few minutes until they arrived. They asked Sadie to thank the conductor for them and asked for his name so they could notify the train company of their wonderful, caring employees.

Christmas Present

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Billy had been hoping for a puppy for Christmas. He had asked Santa for it and could hardly wait until Christmas morning.

He got up and snuck downstairs and snooped among the Christmas gifts under the tree. No barking puppy greeted him. He was disappointed and wondered what he had done wrong that Santa hadn’t brung him a puppy.

His family came down and they started opening gifts although Billy could barely keep from crying.

Finally him parents told him that if he couldn’t put on a happy face and be thankful for what he got then he could just go to his bedroom and go back to bed. He didn’t move.

“Go!” his father ordered him coming in from the hallway.

Billy trudged down to his room. He opened the door and lying on his bed was the most beautful puppy in the world and it even wore a santa hat. His tears dried up magically and he snuggled the pup. He turned to find his family in the doorway with smiles on their face.

“Surprise!” they yelled in unison.

“Santa did hear me,” he whispered with surprise still showing on his face.
