#JusJoJan prompt the 21st – “Spell”

I used to be able to spell. Really I could. I would win all the spelling bees, but I don’t know what happened over the years. Now even simple words will trip me up. I look at it and the longer I look the worse it looks. I am sure it is not right anymore. Really a pain when you are a writer.

Linda G Hill’s Rules:

Hey there! Welcome to the 8th annual Just Jot it January challenge! This year is going to be far simpler than the last couple of years. One prompt per day, link to that post, that’s it. Details below.

But why should you participate in this challenge? To keep the ol’ fingers warm and meet up with an awesome blogging community, that’s why! Just Jot it January, AKA JusJoJan, is a challenge to write a post every day of the month of January. We’ve grown from a handful of participants in 2014 to close to fifty for the past couple of years. Let’s see if we can make it to sixty this year!

Here are the JusJoJan Rules:

1. Just Jot It January starts January 1st, but it’s never too late to join in! Here, we run on the honour system; the “jot it” part of JusJoJan means that anything you jot down, anywhere (it doesn’t have to be a post, it can even be a grocery list), counts as a “jot.” If it makes it to your blog that day, great! If it waits a week to get from a sticky note to your screen, no problem!

2. I’ll post prompts at 2am my time (GMT -5). The prompt will be the word in quotation marks in the title of my 2am post. You don’t have to follow the prompt every day, but that will be where you leave your link for others to see. You’ll get a prompt for every day except Wednesday, when the prompt is simply my One-Liner Wednesday and on Saturday, when your prompt will be the Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS, which will appear at about 9:30am Friday. Each prompt post will include the rules.

3. Please ping back or link to the daily prompt. To ping back, just copy the URL from the daily prompt post, and paste it anywhere in your post. Check to make sure your link shows up where you want it to, and go back occasionally to see other bloggers’ entries – the more you visit others, the more they’ll visit you! Note: A) The newest pingbacks will be at the top of the comments section. B) Ping backs only work if you’re blogging on WordPress. Everyone else must paste a link manually.

4. Tag your post JusJoJan and/or #JusJoJan.

5. Write anything! Any length will do! It can even be a photo or a drawing – you’re going to title it, right? There’s your jot!

6. If your post is NSFW, do not ping back. Please leave your link in the comments with a warning.

7. If you’d like to, use the JusJoJan badge so that others can find your post more easily.

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!

I prefer small towns, very small towns. Whenever I have to go to slightly larger towns, my heart races as I drive down the highway. What really scares me is when I see the sign “Last exit before bridge” just as I go by it and I know that I will end up in Philadelphia and believe me that is a city of huge proportions for me. New York City is worse, but I rarely find myself accidentally ending up there. However Philadelphia is so easy to miss that last exit before the bridge. Thank God at least I had toll money, but my heart is racing in panic and I am desperately trying to figure out how I can get back to NJ where I live in a very small town.

**********

I was trying to think of ways to use the word “wish.” My friends gave me quite a few options yesterday for check, but that is doing nothing right now. I could use those friends right now. I wish I could think of something to write, anything would do. Last night for check I wrote a fairly large story, but today my mind is blank. Although I do wish my chronic pain would go away. My dr decreased my pain medication and I am suffering immensely. I can barely get up and down out of this chair. My knees give out and I fall back into the chair. Dangerous. I need a genie right now with three wishes. I would definitely wish all this pain away. I hate to get up every morning as I can barely move for at least an hour or so and then I can move, but the pain is still there. I can’t win. Really annoyed with the drs for decreasing the pain meds. I know they are doing the right thing as a doctor’s view, but as a suffering person I wish all this pain on them and see if they still want to decrease the pain meds.

#JusJoJan prompt the 17th – “Check!”

#JusJoJan prompt the 17th – “Check!”

**********

I was trying to think of ways to use the word “check.” My friends gave me quite a few options luckily. I mean what are friends for?

Fiction: April 1st

Jo-ellen and her friends Carol, Frank, Nancy, Randy and her boyfriend Charles were at dinner in a fancy restaurant. They were sitting at a huge round table and it was near the wall and the doorway to the restrooms, which also led to the outer hall so waiting customers could use the restrooms while waiting.

They ordered a fancy and very expensive meal and started with appetizers. After the shrimp cocktails, the entrée was served. Jo-ellen dug in, greatly enjoying the meal.

Carol needed to use the restroom and headed out to the hallway, Nancy was next and then Frank, Randy and Charles all went to the restroom. Jo-ellen was so hungry, having not eaten all day she was simply involved with her food and was looking forward to her dessert. She never noticed that everyone had gone to the restroom and not come back.

“Ma’am,” the head waiter said. “Here is your check.”

“Oh we’re not done yet. We still have to order dessert.”

“Ma’am,” your friends are all gone. The hostess noticed a couple of them leaving after coming out of the restroom. She and a waiter checked the restrooms and there is no one in there. Your friends are gone and you have this very large check you have to take care of before you leave and I wouldn’t suggest adding dessert to it if I were you.”

Jo-ellen glanced around, noticing she was all alone for the first time. What had her friends done to her? This was supposed to be a couples date with each couple taking care of their own bill. To top it off, her own boyfriend had deserted her. She didn’t have $600 plus a tip to pay this bill.

She started crying and put her head on the table.

“Ma’am?” the owner of the restaurant said, forcing her to raise her head and look at him. “What do you plan to do about this bill?”

She frantically tried texting all of her friends and asked them what was going on? Where were they? No one replied.

“Ma’am,” the owner spoke again, forcing her to look at him. “I must ask for payment or I will call the police and let them handle it. I am sorry about your friends, but you are responsible for this bill now.”

“Oh my God!” she couldn’t decide whether to stamp her feet in anger or cry. Neither of which would fix her current predicament. Some friends she had. Her mom and dad were going to kill her for sure. Should she wait for the police or just call mom and tell her what happened and ask her if she could possibly come down here with her credit card and pay this bill? Either way she was dead meat. It would take her forever to pay her mom back. If they called the police she would still have to make restitution and she would have a police record to boot. And most likely she would be forbidden to ever enter this restaurant again.

She didn’t want her parents to have to go to the police station to pick her up and then have to make restitution anyhow. Everyone was staring at her.

“Give me a minute to see if I can get my mom to come down here and take care of this. I am so sorry. I didn’t even see them leave the table I was so intent on my food which was delicious by the way.”

She called her mom and explained the situation, trying to hold back the tears. “Mom, they will take me to the police station if I don’t pay this. I could kill my friends right now.”

Mrs. Johnson tried to sound strict and mad, but she was having a hard time not laughing. She looked at Jo-ellen’s friends and smiled. “I will be right down there Jo-ellen, just calm down and wait. Tell them I am on my way to take care of this.”

Jo-ellen explained to the owner what her mother said and that she would be right there to pay the bill. They left her alone to wait. She was crying and feeling sorry for herself. How could they do this to her?

They made her wait 30 minutes. Her head was on the table and she wasn’t looking at the door. “Ma’am,” the owner said again. “Your mom is here.”

Jo-ellen lifted her head and looked at the door to see her mom smiling and laughing at her. What the heck she thought. She expected her to be screaming at her. Her mom gestured at the doorway and in walked all five of her friends, also smiling and laughing. “April Fool!” they shouted.

Jo-ellen looked at the owner and he had a smile on his face as well, so did the waiter. It seemed that this whole thing was played out to teach her that playing April Fool’s jokes on someone can hurt them. She never realized and she was always pranking her friends. They decided to get her back. Her mom and the restaurant played along.

“Would you like your dessert now young lady?” Everyone joined her for dessert including her dad who had come down with her mom. The bill was taken care of and Jo-ellen learned a lesson that day.

The Friday Reminder for #SoCS & #JusJoJan 2021 Daily Prompt – Jan. 16th

The Friday Reminder for #SoCS & #JusJoJan 2021 Daily Prompt – Jan. 16th

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “first thing.” Start your post with the words, “first thing” and go from there. Bonus points if you end your post with the last thing. Have fun!

***************

First thing I became aware of was that my mind wasn’t able to think clearly. I didn’t know what was wrong I only knew something was wrong. I was standing by the emergency pull in the bathroom, but my mind was focused on the one in my bedroom which was clear across the room. It connects to the guard downstairs and brings help. I struggled across the room and fell onto my bed pushing the emergency button as I fell. My memory ending with me being forced to walk to the stretcher and having the guard place my handbag on my lap and tell me he would lock my door was the last thing.

PS I didn’t know it, but I was in the clutches of an overdose. My kidneys had shut down, therefore no longer flushing out the opioids and since I was still taking them I was rapidly going into overdose. Blood pressure was rapidly dropping and I was shot full of Narcan over and over trying to bring me back. I could have died in my sleep if I hadn’t woken up and managed to hit the emergency button. By the time the guard had gotten here I was non-responsive for the most part. Only bits and pieces of that day remain in my memory. They shocked me with so much Narcan I went into withdrawal from the opioid and that was sheer painful torture.

Linda G Hill Writes

Welcome to the Daily 2021 Just Jot it January Prompt and the Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt for SATURDAY, JANUARY 2nd! I want to wish everyone a very happy new year! May 2021 be … uneventful.

For those of you joining SoCS for the first time, it’s a little different than the other prompts in that it’s not always a whole word. Much may be left up to your discretion: this week is no exception. Having said that, if you’re joining in from JusJoJan, don’t want to write stream of consciousness style, no worries. It’s up to you! If you do want to try it, please check out the rules below. It’s fun! Here’s your Saturday prompt:

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “in the corner.” Write about whatever the image or thought of “in the corner” brings to mind. Have fun!

After you’ve written your Saturday post tomorrow, please link it here at this week’s prompt page and check to make sure it’s here in the comments so others can find it and see your awesome post. Anyone can join in!

2019-2020 SoCS Badge by Shelley!

https://www.quaintrevival.com/

You can also use the Just Jot it January badge! To find the rules for Just Jot it January, click here.

Here are the rules for SoCS:

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.

2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.

3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The’,” or simply a single word to get your started.

4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.  Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top. NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, such as Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find right below the “Like” button on my post.

6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!

7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.

Medical alert buttons are useful for those of us who can find themselves in the position of needing help, but not able to call for or even go somewhere for help. My medical alert button that my children insisted I get has a fall alert, GPS and is waterproof for wearing in the shower. It is set up to call for EMT’s if I fall and don’t answer, I can call for help and can talk and it also alerts my family immediately. And we found out that the Medicaid I get from the state pays for the button so I don’t have to. I have used it twice now to call for help and thank God I have it. I don’t have to argue with the 911 operator (some of them can be problematic) and I don’t have to call my family. It is all taken care of for me.

#JusJoJan prompt the 14th – “Neighbor”

#JusJoJan prompt the 14th – “Neighbor”

**********

Most of my neighbors have been pretty terrible, but I couldn’t ask for better neighbors than I have right now. They live directly across the hall from me. I live in a high rise and so our apartments are very close together. I felt comfortable enough to give them a key to take care of what needed to be taken care of during my hospital stays, getting mail and packages and putting them in my apartment, etc. They will do anything for me and I am not used to having neighbors like that.

The children were outside building a whole family of snow carolers to entertain the neighbors when they looked outside their windows.

Here are the JusJoJan Rules:

If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure.

Here are the simple JusJoJan Rules:

Each prompt post will include the rules.

2 a) The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!

#JusJoJan prompt the 12th – “Sing”

#JusJoJan prompt the 12th – “Sing”

**********

I can’t sing. I can’t carry a tune to save my life. I have no middle register. It is either high or low, no normal in the middle range. Singing embarrasses me so much. My ex-husband had a great singing voice and he was in the schools musicals. We didn’t go to the same school so I couldn’t be part of them in any way, but I went to every rehearsal and knew every part and could have been a stand-in if necessary except for the singing parts of course. I knew all the words though to both the play and the songs.
