What made you smile?

****

I completed and won my Camp NaNoWriMo session this time. The best part is that I am still working on it. I didn’t lose interest like I usually do. I still have at least a third or more of the story that isn’t written at all, but I know where I want it to go so even though I quit with the outline I still know the story. Although it has evolved numerous times as I worked on it. It is a thriller and I needed a murder or two and a villain, the murderer. Something new for me. I am still smiling about this one.

Trent’s Rules:

Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas.  If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity.  Don’t smile about the misfortune of others.  Don’t smile in a way to excludes others.  Make sure a 12 year old can read it.

To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile.  Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment 🙂 ).   You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me).   Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile.  (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST

Riding the Rails

By Tessa Dean copyright August 2020

Mac and Stu raced towards the moving train, anxious that they may miss the next phase of their journey across the country. Grabbing for a handhold to pull themselves up and into the freight car, they helped each other over the threshold and into the dirty car.

They had jobs waiting on the east coast, and they were only halfway across the country to their destination. The jobs wouldn’t wait for them to arrive, so they had to make sure each freight car change went smoothly. Suddenly the train stopped, not a good sign. They hid as best they could.

Haikai Challenge #151 (8/9/20): first (autumn) storm (hatsu arashi) / Darkness (Yami) #haiku #senryu #haibun #tanka #haiga #renga

Thunder, Lightning, Storm, Sky, Night

As Isaias struck in August, the first Autumn month of the traditional calendar, what better kigo could there be than first (autumn) storm (hatsu arashi)? As the storm caused blackouts that still plague other parts of the New York Metropolitan area, what better kigo can there be than darkness (Yami)? Therefore, haijin, you have a choice this week.

Write the haikai poem of your choice (haiku, senryu, haibun, tanka, haiga, renga, etc.) that alludes to either the first (autumn) storm (hatsu arashi), Darkness (Yami), or both!

A colorless world. To someone with Bipolar Disorder life itself, at its very essence can seem dull and colorless. Only recently have I felt as if the color has re-entered my world. I am doing something I want to do just for me. I am creating youtube videos, editing them and doing live streaming on my channel about writing. I am involved in a story that has taken hold of my imagination and is taking me out of that colorless world I resided in. I feel alive and it is such a unique experience for someone like me. Mental illness robs your life of color, but it is possible to get it back at some points. I can’t say what tomorrow will bring, but today my world is no longer black and white, or even gray. There is color at the edges and moving inwards to fill that void in my head.

Shade Trees

By Tessa Dean August 2020

Trixie was carefully checking the area out. She was looking for a new home, and she wanted to be near the water as her boyfriend, Mark, loved to fish, and so did her two young sons, Randy and Ross. Mark was willingly teaching them how to fish. It didn’t matter to him that they were only four years old. He loved them both dearly, so much more than their father did it would seem. He loved to spend time with them.

She was approaching a row of homes that appeared to be facing the water’s edge. She couldn’t tell much from the back if the homes had the requirements the men and boys were looking for in their new home.

Trixie didn’t care either way since fishing wasn’t her idea of a great time. In her fantasy, she was looking for a waterfront view and shady trees so she could lie there and spend her spare time reading. Laughing at that, Trixie realized just how little time she would have for that little fantasy with four-year-old twin boys to take care of and usually by herself since their father didn’t have the time to spend with them he claimed.

The realtor was chatting away, and Trixie let her voice roll over her. She couldn’t wait until they got to the front of the house they were here to see. She was looking for a place to call their own with just the right requirements.

They headed down the path to the front of the row of houses. Trixie gasped at the beauty spread before her. The house they were heading to had a tiny little pier out front and huge elm trees in the front yard that provided lots of shade. She could hang a hammock out there, and the men and boys could fish.

“This is it,” Trixie exclaimed to the realtor. “This is the one I want. Please start the paperwork. I want to move in right away.”

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Aug. 8/2020

2019-2020 SoCS Badge by Shelley! https://www.quaintrevival.com/

This is Teresa Smeigh from www.tessacandoit.com writing under a pen name. I am now using Tessa Dean and my new website/blog is www.tessadeanauthor.com.

Linda’s prompt: Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “spot.” Write whatever image the word “spot” invokes. Have fun!

When I think of “spot” I think of the mascot of one of our local newspapers. “Spot” the dog used to come out to one of the addresses and it could be anywhere in the newpaper’s circulation. If the homeowner/renter’s spotted “Spot” the dog walking around the property and approached them, they would win the current jackpot.

Our address had been picked since I had been featured in the paper for an article they did on my job moving out of state and how we would be without our jobs. My husband spotted the dog figure moving around in our yard and approached him. They asked for me and since I had just gotten home from the midnight shift at work I was already in bed, but he came and got me and told me that “Spot” was outside and I needed to come out. We were just getting ready to leave on a trip for the Bahamas and our little jackpot of $400 was definitely appreciated. Our picture as a family, was taken with “Spot” and it was posted in the newspaper. Ahh the memories!

My neighbor likes to cook and he does a great job. I don’t cook. So last night he made a wonderful shrimp dinner, with a baked potato and asparagus.

So my smile was enjoying a plate full of shrimp.

Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt #165 – Cavalier

“I’m not going, Pamela,“ he said in a cavalier manner. “I don’t wish to meet your parents.”

“Justin, please don’t make me beg. Mom and Dad want to meet you. We’ve been dating for a year now, and they think it is time for you to meet them, and I have to agree with them. What is your problem?”

“I said no, so no!”

#WeekendCoffeeShare – Writing Challenge

Coffee, Pen, Notebook, Caffeine, Cup

Hey everyone, this is Teresa Smeigh from www.tessacandoit.com and I am posting on my new blog www.tessadeanauthor.com. I am writing with a pen name now.

Thanks to Eclectic Alli for hosting this prompt.

If we were having coffee, for one thing I wouldn’t have coffee as I don’t drink it and it is way too hot anyhow. I am mainly drinking water only or occasionally I will make a pitcher of ice tea. You can choose your poison.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I am working on my new novel for NaNoWriMo and keeping slightly ahead of target for the month. I count anything to do with writing in my 3 hours a day goal. If I am writing great. If I am watching a how-to video that is also great. As long as it deals with writing it is fine. Still trying to come up with a title for the book. That is proving a little harder as the subject leads to titles used a few times already which I am told you can’t copyright a title so that isn’t a problem, but I would like something a little different. It has a working title of “Dangerous Obsession.”

My dad has recovered from Covid-19 and on Wednesday night my sister and I are going to the nursing home to visit. Visitation is being allowed by the governor but must be held outside and within social distancing guidelines. Fine with us since we have no desire to go inside the building which is riddled with the virus.

I tossed the outline I struggled all of June with and am pantsing my books as usual. It is in my head and there is no need for an outline. All I really need is a list of character names as they get confusing at times and their relation to the protagonist. Still trying to figure out how to use different POVs (point of view) because I think that will add some necessary parts of the story that would be missing if I was just telling it with a narrator, the protagonist. I need to get inside the heads of those other characters.

I had the second injection on my spine and I am in worse pain than the first one. I spent most of today lying down to ease the pain. Sitting is uncomfortable for long periods of time. I also have to wear a back brace for timed periods throughout the day. This could increase the pain.

Be safe everyone,
