BETTER
CRISP
CUT

**********

Betty finished ironing her shirt, making nice crisp creases in the darts. She hung it up on a hangar and then laid it on top of her laundry basket so she could take it upstairs and hang it up.

Jerry came running into the kitchen covered in mud and blood. My blouse she thought about a minute too late.

Jerry ran straight for the stairs and pushed her laundry basket out of the way with his dirty hands. He started running up the stairs. “You had better run,” Betty shouted at him. “Where did the blood come from anyhow?”

“I cut myself on a broken bottle someone threw into the yard. I was trying to pick it up to throw it away. Sorry about the mess.”

“I want to kill you right now, young man, but let me see that cut. You are filthy and it needs to be cleaned.”

“Aw ma, let me clean it myself. I can do it.”

“Jerry, you simply aren’t old enough to clean it properly.”

“Ma, I know you are going to make it hurt even more. Can’t you clean it without hurting so much?”

“Come here or I will pour alcohol on it and if you think it hurts now, just wait until the alcohol hits it.”

Jerry sighed, and headed over to his mom. Gingerly he held out his hand. Betty cringes. It would need stitches. Now that would hurt. Her blouse was ruined so she ripped it into strips and tied them around the cut to try and stop the bleeding on the trip to the doctor’s office.

“Next time,” she said, “please get an adult to pick up the glass. You are too young to be doing it, do you hear me?”

“Okay, Ma, I get it, but do I really need stitches?”

“Yes, Jerry, now move it.”

Jerry stomped out to the car, trying not to cry.

DAY
AFTER
SPIRIT

**********

The day after Marjie and Randy spent the night at the haunted house they went back during the daytime. “This place doesn’t look so scary during the day, ” Marjie joked. Just then a spirit of an old woman walked across the front porch and into the house by the front door. Marjie and Randy lost no time getting out of there. They grabbed their bikes and ran as fast as their legs would carry them.

Stopping when they had reached the end of the road they tried to slow their breathing down so they could talk. “Who was that,” Randy managed to get out.

“I don’t know. Thankfully we didn’t see her last night.”

ANIMALS
MUTE
SELLING

**********

The mute child stood watching the animals in the zoo. She was fascinated by all of them. Her mother could barely pull her away to move her on to the next cage. Suddenly she pointed to the man selling animal balloons. Her mother took her over and let her have her choice and she picked the koala bear. Later in the souvenir shop she also wanted a stuffed koala bear and when her mother asked the person selling the souvenirs the price she immediately told the girl no, which led to a crying spell. The mother had to pull her crying out of the store and lead her home. The child didn’t understand why she couldn’t have that one too. At four years old she didn’t understand price. The stuffed bears were considerably more expensive.

SILENT

POINT

**********

Jack stood still, silent and pointed to the group of older kids that were searching for them. Jack and the younger boys slid quietly into the old barn and hid behind the bales of hay. “Come out, come out, wherever you are,” the older kids shouted. Jack and his group ignored them and they passed by the barn and headed into town. Once they were safely out of ear shot, Jack and his group moved off away from the town and headed home. They didn’t want to risk running into them again.

REMOTE

**********

Ramone pointed at the sky and Justin reacted. He pointed the remote at the drone and quickly armed it to fire at the other drone that had just appeared in their view. There was an explosion as the other drone blew up into a fiery mess dropping quickly to the ground. Their opponents came running over the hill shouting at the unfairness. Nothing in the rules said you could blow up your opponent’s drone they were shouting, but then again, nothing said you couldn’t was the reply. It was a standoff. The two teams just stood there glaring at each other while the one drone continued to burn.

John thought about it a bit and then said, “Sure why not. It sounds like fun!”

“We went last year didn’t we,” Karen asked.

“It was a lot of noise, but we did have fun. Maybe we should take Betsy and Carl with us too. Mom’s been bugging me to take them on a double date for weeks now.”

“Well I guess so, but they will have to be home earlier than us so we will need somewhere else to go until curfew, ” Karen said.

FINAL
CUP
RIBBON

**********

The ribbons on my hat were blowing wildly about. The elderly lady behind me kept hitting me in the head and telling me my ribbons were ruining her view and asking me to remove my hat.

I tried to ignore her as the final lap of the race started. She finally reached over and grabbed my hat off of my head, just as the the winning horse crossed the finish line. I missed seeing my horse win his very first race.

When they placed the winner’s cup in my hands I turned around and was about to hit her with it, but she was lying on the ground clutching her chest. They rushed the EMTs over and eventually she was able to sit up. They placed her on the stretcher and took her away and I prayed all the way to the hospital that I hadn’t killed her by being so rude. I should have removed my hat, but I was so excited that my horse was running his first race. I sternly told myself that I had no reason to be so rude.

I arrived at the hospital and ran inside to see if she was alright. They refused to tell me anything unless I was family so I told them I was her sister. Thank God, she was going to be ok and I slipped out of there before they tried to take me to her. She would probably have another heart attack if she saw me.

CHEST

**********By Tessa Dean**********

As I leaned over my desk to draw a picture for my drawing class, I accidentally banged the medical alert button on my chest setting off the alarm at the company who monitors the button 24 hours a day. I was so engrossed in my drawing it wasn’t until the EMT’s broke down my door to come to my aid, that I realized I had missed the voice asking if I was alright. When you do not answer they assume the worst and send help. Now how do I explain this to my landlord. I just might have to use the button to call for help if decides to beat me to a pulp.
