Kimberley shook Cassie’s shoulder. “Wake up sis. You’re going to be late for your date. No more snoozing.”

Cassie shakes her head and tries to wake herself up. She had been almost sound asleep actually. She looked at the time. “I need to send Wayne a text when I leave. He is supposed to wait for me outside the restaurant so we can go in together. I am kind of glad we are driving separately. I still have this little feeling of doubt about this whole thing. Part of me wants to call Wayne and tell him I’m sick. I wish I could shake this feeling. Do you think I am crazy to have so much doubt? I also have to text my friends and make sure they are in place. I have two of them going to be inside eating dinner and two of them outside to make sure I leave and get home okay. I am probably being very paranoid, but there’s that little feeling of doubt that just won’t go away.”

Cassie ran her fingers through her hair as if trying to fix it, but her hair looked perfect already. She chewed on her fingernail while checking her phone for a text message from Wayne saying he was canceling their date. So far the date was still on. She wondered what area outside the restaurant he would be waiting for her. Since he didn’t say parking lot specifically she figured it would be near the front door.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

“I can just imagine Cassie now gearing up for a big row about me not calling her or returning her calls often enough. She seems the type to harp on a subject. Although she won’t be in any condition to fight about anything right away,” Wayne tells his two life-long friends, Rocky and Butch. He unconsciously fingers the bottle again.

**********Cassie’s Point of View**********

“Hey Kimberley come look at this. I don’t remember that strange table being in the park a few weeks ago when I was over there. From its proximity, I would have thought we would have noticed it either from this window or coming in and out of the apartment.”

Kimberley was struggling to remember if she had noticed it before or not. It sure was a strange table. “Do you think someone might be having some kind of party over there? I would expect a picnic table in the woods though.

**********Wayne’s Point of View – using 44 word prompt “yonder”***

Wayne looked yonder out his apartment window to the parking lot. The good news is that it had stopped snowing, but the bad news was that now there was a drenching rain. The vehicles were clear of snow now, but the sidewalks were slushy.

**********Cassie’s Point of View**********

There was still time until she had to leave to meet up with Wayne for the date. She stared out the window and saw that the snow had stopped, but the drenching rain was making the sidewalks very slushy and she was attempting to wear 4-inch heels for this first date.

Kimberley had joined her at the window and looking at the resulting slush says, “Maybe you should wear those sexy black boots you have. They have a smaller heel and some grippers in the bottoms. I’d hate to see you fall walking in those heels in that slushy mess.”

Cassie, thinking about that possibility says, “You are probably right. I can’t believe it was just a couple of weeks ago I was running on the trails across the street. I hadn’t run for a while and it was actually fun and I was able to forget about the the whole incident with the drugged candy for a while, anyhow. I get sick every time I think how close the babies came to possibly eating that candy as well. What kind of creep would do that kind of thing?”

Cassie went to the closet they shared and pulled out her boots. They were black ankle boots with a belted strap and side zipper. The heel was thick and only two inches tall. They also had a rubber outsole which would help keep her from slipping in the slush and if it got colder and started to freeze it would also help keep her from sliding on the ice. Not as sexy as the heels, but still pretty sexy compared to a snow boot.

#threethingschallenge, #Whatdoyousee, Book, Fiction, Photo Prompt, Prompt

An FYI on my current writing

I started my very first novel in July 2020 and then rewrote it for November 2020 NANOWRIMO. Now I have gone through the beta readers and am editing it prior to getting a professional edit. I will not be publishing this book for you to buy, but once done it will be published on this blog in its entirety. This one novel has now become a series. I created a fictional small town and these will be their mysteries and murders.

Books two and three are partially started and that is what you have been reading on here although these serial prompts (as I call them) are not the total story and may change while actually doing the full writing for the book. You are seeing bits of it. They will also be published on this blog eventually.

I want people to enjoy my writing, but regular publishing, both traditional and Indie, aren’t for me right now due to financial considerations. BUT I still want people to enjoy them.

These two serial prompts are brought about by:

“The three things challenge”

Rochelle’s “Friday Fictioneers”

Sadje’s “What Do You See?” Look under categories

Reena”s “Exploration Challenge”

Sammi’s “Weekend Writing Prompt”

New to Writing – #WritePhoto

These are just some of the prompts I follow (and can use for these stories), but not all of them can be used in my current work. Check them out if you like writing to prompts. These are some of my favorites, but my favorites are not limited to these particular ones. There are so many prompt sites out there, but I can’t write for them all sadly, especially if I want to write books too. I have about 8 books planned for this series so far. Some of them are old NANOWRIMO books I never finished or did anything with and some like books two and three are made from serial prompts. And actually book one uses many of my older serial prompts put together to form the story.

And for anyone looking for horror prompts, my friend Laura Nettles has 100 of them on her blog.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne had prepared carefully for tonight. Cassie was expecting dinner and then a movie. He was pretty sure she had her friends lined up at the restaurant to be on danger watch. When he had asked her to go on a date again she had tried to smile, but it looked more like a grimace. She was struggling to find the right words. Wayne hoped she hadn’t changed her mind because he had given her so much time to think about the whole idea of the date.

She had sat down and appeared to weigh the options. Part of her definitely still wanted to go on a date, but part of her seemed to be more wary. He figured if he could get her to say yes, then the details would work out. They would be meeting up at the restaurant as far as she knew and her friends would be there. He rubbed the little bottle again.

**********Cassie’s Point of View**********

Cassie was fumbling with the zipper on her skirt. She was unable to do it herself and finally asked Kimberley for help. Kimberley was eyeing Cassie. She didn’t appear excited about going out. She had bought a new skirt, halter top and black lacy panties with a matching garter belt, but her usual enthusiasm for a new outfit wasn’t there. Several times she started to speak, but couldn’t get the words out. Kimberley said, “Are you okay Cassie? You don’t seem your normal bubbly self.”

“I don’t know. Something just feels off. I know I have tried for weeks now to get Wayne to finally take me on that date he promised, but so much has happened and I am unable to gather up too much excitement.”

“What color nylons are you going to where? Black to match the halter top or skin tone?”

“I don’t know. What do you think?”

“Well with the teal skirt and black halter top I would think black would be a nice contrast and definitely more sexy. Or maybe you are not looking for sexy, Cassie. I can’t gauge your mood.” Cassie’s smile disappeared.

“Part of me thinks he sent me that drugged candy. I am not sure why I think that. I know he said he was sick, but I just have a hard time believing that. I wonder what he will drink at the restaurant. He is old enough to drink. Will he have beer or a cocktail? I can’t drink so I would hope he would just drink soda or tea with me, but what if he drinks? I am trying to remember what he had to drink that night we met. Since we are meeting at the restaurant I could always drive him home or to the movies and just leave his car there if need be.

“Well if you ask me, I think you should wear the black nylons. I think it looks much nicer.” Kimberley pulled the package of black nylons out of the shopping bag and held them up. I choose these milady.”

Cassie took the proffered nylons and began to work them up her legs and then slipped the black 4″ high heels on.

“Nice!” Kimberley openly admired her. “You are beautiful!”

**********Wayne’s Point of View using the 100 word Friday Fictioneers Photo Prompt**********

It was time to start moving forward with his plans to do away with Cassie before he got any more invested in his feelings for her. He opened the old van and stowed the worn comforter in the back. He had to shift the gears manually.

The snow started to fall early this winter. Another reason to get his plans started. He unconsciously rubbed the bottle in his pocket. He hadn’t thought it all out yet. He didn’t want anything to go wrong. Yet he wasn’t sure he wanted to do this. He was afraid he was falling in love.

**********Cassie’s Point of View**********

Cassie was not sure what to do now. She tilted her head to the side as she looked at Wayne seated at one of her tables at the restaurant. He was showing her his dimples. He had a beautiful smile. Slowly her smile formed to match his. She couldn’t believe that he was actually here at the restaurant. He told her he was feeling better and he wanted to have that date if she was still willing to go out with him.

“I know I have been pretty distant lately Cassie, but I have been so sick. I have been wanting to go on this date for so long.”

Cassie didn’t know what to say. She looked out the window that was beside his table. She laughed nervously. Should she believe him. He looked earnest, but she still had this little niggling doubt.

She had a hard time getting back into the groove of working after the incident with the poisoned candy. Her boss, Marco, was not happy with all the time she had missed between spraining her ankle and now the poisoned candy. She had to convince him she was willing to work hard. He kept her job for her each time and she knew that the other waitresses pitched in and worked her hours so he wouldn’t replace her. She had so many people she owed her job to. She couldn’t screw this up.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne sat across the street watching Cassie as she sat slumped in the garden staring at her hands, her weeding forgotten. She bit her lip, lost in her thoughts. Wayne noticed Cassie seemed more subdued since her bout with the drug. She didn’t smile as much and he kind of missed the smile that lit up her face. She just seemed to sit there and stare at the world around her. She also cried a lot, a tissue always in her hands. He didn’t know why he cared that she seemed so sad. What was happening to his hating women?

**********Cassie’s Point of View**********

Cassie didn’t know if it was coincidental or not, but now that she was starting to pull away from the thought of dating Wayne, he seemed to be hinting more and more that they should get together. He even called her and gave quite a performance of his apologies that he had been so distant. He told her that he was still sick, but couldn’t wait until he felt well enough to take her out. The doctor’s didn’t seem to know what was the matter with him and he was really getting tired of laying around. He had so many plans he told her.

**********Cassie’s POV**********

Cassie pondered her close call with the drugs. The police had not been able to establish who had injected the “Cloud Nine,” as it was known on the streets, into the candy. It had been a close call. She still shuddered at how close she had come to have eaten enough of the candy to kill herself and then there was the fact that her little brothers and sister could have eaten the candy as well and it would most likely have been strong enough to kill them. They were only babies.

Cassie peered over her shoulder constantly. She had picked one of her favorite paths. The trees were huge and the foliage clung to the small path she followed. It was dark in the woods even though the sun was shining brightly. She chose this path so she could think and try and make some sense of her life and to think about some of her recent choices. She had on her yoga pants and sneakers and decided to run on the path for a bit as she thought about this most recent development. She put on a burst of speed and raced over the slightly uneven terrain.

She was too young to be suffering from burnout, but her recent life had become so complicated. She slowed down to catch her breath. She thought about Wayne and the frustration she had over being so gullible. The fact was though, that she was still attracted to him despite the obvious deceit. She knew he had to be lying to her. He was stringing her along. Promising a date, but not willing to actually go out on a date.

**********Wayne’s POV**********

Wayne had resorted to some heavy lies with Cassie. The robust blonde girl filled his mind from dawn to dusk. He had never felt like this with a girl. He hated women so why was his mind even remotely thinking marriage to Cassie?

He sat on his mattress stuffed with goose feathers. His heart was heavy although he knew he was stupid to be even thinking about dating this girl.

**********Wayne’s Point of View**********

Wayne and his friends fist bumped each other and then pumped each other on the shoulder. All three of the boys were laughing hysterically at Cassie as she stumbled out of her house and to the house next door. It was obvious she had eaten the candy and they were thrilled with out how it worked out. They continued stuffing pizza into their mouths as they watched as the ambulance and police arrived. They thought it funny when the kid came out with the box of candy. Obviously she had been able to tell them she thought the candy was drugged. He wondered if she would realize that he was the one who sent the candy. She might think it, but how would she prove it? She didn’t even know who he was. He rubbed the bottle absently and wondered if he would have to resort to using it. He was planning as he went.

PROMPT #177

The visuals from last week are still floating in my eyes. So, I couldn’t think of anything other than a visual prompt for this week.

You are free to choose any one of the two images given below, and create a piece based on it.

Cassandra stumbled and fell getting off of her bed. She drug herself to the bathroom. Her vision blurry and somewhat odd. She tried to look at herself in the mirror. What was she seeing? Her face was separated as if she was looking into a fun house mirror, but this wasn’t fun. Was she dreaming again? She raised her hand to her face and she saw her hand, also fractured in the mirror. It was her and she wasn’t dreaming, but why was she seeing such a fractured image of herself in the mirror? She didn’t catch on right away.

She looked away. She didn’t know what she was seeing. Something was wrong and she was scared. She wanted her mother, but then remembered that she was supposed to be babysitting. Oh my God, the children she mumbled. What had happened to the children? They were too young to be alone and her other sister, Kimberley had a date tonight so she wasn’t home. Cassie was in charge and she couldn’t even deal with herself right now.

She vaguely remembered that she had received a box of chocolates in the mail and she assumed they were from Wayne. She loved chocolate and dove into the box and ate several of them and then remembers nothing until she woke up on her bed and stumbled into the bathroom to find her image fractured in the mirror. Was she drugged? Surely Wayne wouldn’t have drugged her. There wasn’t a name on the box that she remembered. It could have been from anyone. The chocolate, it had to be the chocolate.

Her face turned white at the implication. She had to get help. She couldn’t be responsible for her younger siblings. They were all under four years old. She had started to shake uncontrollably and she backed into the corner of the bathroom, not wanting to catch a glimpse of her face in the mirror. She was whimpering and starting to talk to herself. She didn’t know what to do. She needed her mother or at least an adult.

I’ve got to get next store for help she said. Mrs. Banks would help me, if she’s home tonight. Right now any semi-adult would help. There was almost always someone next door at the Banks house.

She headed down the stairs, looking for the children, but she didn’t see them. Oh God, where were the children? Mom is going to kill me.

She struggled with the door knob and finally got the door open. Stumbling across the lawn, she aimed for the Banks’ house. Please someone be home. The next house down was the Callan’s house. She fell up the porch steps and banged on the door as hard as she was able, although it hardly made a sound. What was wrong with her? She couldn’t trust herself to follow a line back to her house or further on to the Callan’s house. The Banks had to be home she pleaded with herself.

Thomas Banks, the oldest child, opened the door. He took one look at Cassie and called his girlfriend Ginny. “Something is wrong with her,” he started to sound frantic himself. “Help her into the house and on to the couch.”

Together they got her inside the house. “Cassie, Cassie…what’s wrong?”

All Cassie could manage was, “Where are the children? Oh God, where are the children?”

Thomas and Ginny exchanged looks. Thomas told Ginny to go next door and see if she could find the children. She must be talking about her little sister and two little brothers. Kimberley was older and could certainly take care of herself and the children so she must not be home either. Their mother was probably at work.

Thomas, hesitated and then picked up the phone. “9-1-1 what is your emergency?”

Thomas was flustered and didn’t know what to say. “I am not sure. I have my neighbor here and she’s acting very strange. My girlfriend when to find out about the little children she says she was watching. If I had to guess I would say she was on a drug of some sort, but I am not a doctor. Plus she doesn’t take drugs. We need help here. She’s mumbling and fidgety and she looks terrified.”

“Help is on the way. Stay with her. You mentioned children. Whose children? Hers?”

“No her younger siblings. There are three of them and they are all under four years old. Cassie is 19 years old I believe.”

Thomas’s phone rang. It was Ginny. “The children are all in bed sleeping. They all seem ok. I will stay here with them. How’s Cassie?”

“She’s pretty messed up. I called 9-1-1 because she needs more help than we can give her. I will see you once their mom gets home or if they take Cassie to the hospital. Actually their mom is going to need us to watch the little ones until Kimberley gets home because I am sure she will be going to the hospital to be with Cassie.”

Just then sirens could be heard in the distance. Help was on the way. Cassie started screaming, “I can’t look, I can’t look!”

Thomas allowed the paramedics in and stepped away from Cassie. She had started to punch at something only she could see. She pleaded for it to go away and to leave her alone. When they tried to touch her she flinched and told them to leave her alone and go away. “Don’t let the babies have the candy, bad candy!”

Confusion reigned. Thomas called Ginny and asked about candy in some form. She keeps warning us not to eat the candy.

Ginny looked at the coffee table and there was a box of chocolates sitting there and they were open. Several pieces had been eaten. She told Thomas who informed the paramedics who were still struggling with her. Drugged Candy? He was told to get the candy and any wrappings that might have been with it.

Thomas came back and gave it to the police who had finally arrived on the scene. One of the officers was told to take it in and get it analyzed right away. She appeared to be reacting to a drug although they were not sure which. The paramedic sent one of the EMTs over to quickly check on the children to make sure they were actually sleeping and not, God forbid, dead.

Cassie was given an injection of Diazepam to try and calm her down. They had to get her to the hospital quickly. It was unknown how much of whatever drug had been injected into that candy she took. They couldn’t take her in kicking, screaming and punching at something only she could see.
