Idyllic Spot

by Teresa Smeigh May 2020

Caroline stared wistfully at the lovely painted bridge she had just crossed over. She had never been here before, and she would have thought she was in the wrong spot if Robert hadn’t mentioned the lovely red bridge crossing over the stream and leading to a lush wooded spot.

She stared at the lovely, colorful butterflies flitting around the flowers and bushes. Occasionally a pretty hummingbird would enter the area and fly around. The stream sparkled and glittered with the occasional sunshine that made it through the dense area surrounding this open spot.

She wondered why they were here. Usually, they went to more secluded spots. She assumed that they were going to talk. She always hated it when Robert would want to have a conversation as they usually had to do with their relationship, and she knew it was not supposed to be a long term affair. He had been looking for someone to see outside his marriage, and sometimes things got a little uncomfortable for him, and they had to talk about it. She wondered what she had done this time.

He was late, and she was getting tired of standing. She looked for somewhere to sit, but other than the lush green grass, there wasn’t anywhere to sit. So she gingerly sat down and tried to pull her skirt up so she could bend her legs to sit on the grass.

She had been seeing Robert for over five years now, and she never expected this relationship to last that long. He knew she was looking for more than a casual fling, but so far, she hadn’t tried to force the issue. He made himself clear that he had no intention of leaving his wife. She had agreed to that and tried not to let it bother her. She had made the mistake of falling in love with a man she knew wasn’t looking for love, just a fling. That wasn’t his fault. She could only blame herself.

Caroline heard the lilting sound of voices coming closer. She was about to have company, but it wouldn’t be Robert as he came alone unless he ran into someone on the path coming in here. Her car was in the parking lot, and it was a slightly longer hike than normal. Anxiously she watched the opening to the bridge.

Much to her surprise, it was Robert, and he was with a woman. Watching them cross the red bridge, she thought she saw a resemblance to his wife in the woman’s face. She had seen pictures of her. Surely he wouldn’t have brought his wife along.

She stood up and waited for them to approach where she was standing. She didn’t move to greet them.

“Caroline,” Robert began and stopped. He looked very uncomfortable, and she could imagine he was.

The woman was watching her carefully, saying nothing at first, but her expression said she wasn’t happy. “Robert, let’s get this over with, I have to get back to work. I have no idea what you were thinking, but this ends here or else.”

“Caroline, I’m sorry, she caught me leaving this morning as she came home to get something she forgot for work. I didn’t plan for this to happen. She found your birthday present, and it was kind of obvious since it is not her birthday yet, not to mention that the present wouldn’t suit her. Samantha wouldn’t be caught dead in sexy lingerie, and I have never bought her any.”

Samantha opened her tote bag and tossed a sexy teddy at Caroline, smacking her in the face with it. Next came the birthday card addressed to Caroline. Caroline ducked this time and backed up.

“I don’t know what you think you are doing with someone else’s husband, but it won’t be mine. If I find out he’s been sniffing around you again, I will kill you both, and I am not kidding. My daddy won’t put up with this kind of thing. Robert is mine, or he’s history, and if it is you he is with, you are history too. Do you understand me? Speak up, girl. I can’t hear you.”

“Yes, ma’am, and I’m so sorry. I will never set my eyes on him again.” Caroline picked up her purse and left, practically running across the red bridge.

Hide and Seek

by Teresa Smeigh May 2020

“This is boring,” Carl said, wiping the sweat off of his face with his shirt.

“Oh, Carl, you are always bored. What do you want to do?” Susie said, also wiping the sweat onto the bottom of her shirt. “I am tired of coming up with ideas on what to do. You choose today.”

“Let’s head down to the sea wall. Lots of places to hide, and we can play hide and seek. I’ll even let you hide first.”

“I don’t know, my parents have always stressed that it was too dangerous down there to play.”

“Oh, Susie, you are so boring. I play down there all the time.”

“I don’t know…”

“Come on, please.”

“OK, but don’t tell anyone. I don’t want to get in trouble.”

They start walking towards the sea. Upon arrival, they both start to climb to the top of the sea wall, and Susie looks around. The area was pretty, and she saw lots of rocks and things that she could hide behind.

As Carl begins counting to 100, Susie heads to the rocky area and spots a large rock to hide behind. She was pretty close to the edge, and when Carl hit 100 and started to look around, she was afraid he might see her and started to back up, not noticing she was approaching the edge of the cliff they were on.

Her foot started to slip on the sandy surface, and she let out a scream, catching Carl’s attention. He races to her and grabs her arm just as she slipped off the edge and was dangling there.

“Give me your other arm and stop struggling,” Carl urgently pleads with her.

She tried to calm herself down and gave Carl her other arm, and he slowly dragged her up the side of the cliff and back onto firm ground. He was shaking and couldn’t talk. He just hugged her tightly until their shaking subsided.

“Thank you, Carl. Oh my God,” she practically stutters. She was still shaken and started to cry.

“Susie, I am so sorry. I didn’t think this was a dangerous place to play. I should have listened to you. I will never come here again. I don’t think I will ever forget how close you came to falling off that cliff.”

Carl puts his arm around her, and they head towards home and away from the sea.

Blue Screen of Death!

By Tessa Dean August 2021

Randy looked adorable and innocent when his mother brought him into her office to show him to her coworkers. Everyone gathered around him to pinch his cheeks and tell him how cute he was. However, five minutes later, the enraged operator of the computer little Randy was playing with turned to Randy’s mom and swore at her for being so stupid as to let Randy out of her sight because now her computer screen showed the blue screen of death as Randy happily punched the keys. Randy’s mom was swearing at him and pulling him away from the computer, but the computer’s operator was crying about the project she had been working on and was probably lost now even if the IT department could get her computer back up and running. She had a deadline of another hour and it seemed highly unlikely that the computer would be up and running again and that the project could be saved. Randy was dragged out of the office all the while screaming, “Play!”

Edge of the Cliff

By Tessa Dean August 2021

Sarah and Thomas argued about the safety of Tabitha, their two-year-old daughter, while on a trip to the Diamond Cliffs. Thomas saw no reason for them not to take Tabby with them, and Sarah said, “You know how fast a two-year-old can get out of your sight and move quickly into a danger zone. It’s impossible to keep your eye on them every second, and they move too fast.”

“Oh Sarah, don’t be such a wuss. You can watch her just fine.”

“Thomas, that is part of the problem. I am the only one watching her as you can’t move with your broken leg. Once I put her down, she will head for the cliffs, and there aren’t any safety rails there. It only takes seconds for her to disappear if we take out eyes off her for any reason. It is not fair to me to have to be responsible for her every second.”

“So take the playpen and her toys.”

“She climbs out of that playpen now, and toys only interest her for a short period. You know she will want to go out and see the water, and she will head for the edge. This trip is hard enough for me to push you in the wheelchair down the sandy paths, and you will have to hold her, and even if we did take the playpen, I would have to carry it and push you two. No, I am telling you.”

“Look, this is our vacation, and we can’t leave without seeing the cliffs and the sea beyond them. You know we have wanted to come here for a long time.”

“Yes, and we didn’t have a two-year-old then. This is not the time for this trip, I tell you.”

“Oh, come on, Sarah, we may never get this chance again. Please!”

“I swear if something happens to Tabby, you are going over that cliff after her.”

The next day they drive up to the cliffs and park in the lot. Sarah is still grumbling about the dangers of this trip. She struggles to have to push a wheelchair, through the sand, with a grown man and a baby. Not to mention carrying their lunches, a blanket, and the playpen.

They finally come out of the woods onto the flat area near the cliff’s edge so Thomas could look at the view. He wasn’t going to be any help to her with Tabby. She set up the playpen and put Tabby in it, and she immediately began screaming to get out and within minutes had climbed up and over the top, falling on the ground beneath it. She picked herself up and started running for the cliff’s edge, yelling, “Water, mommy.” Sarah dropped everything and headed after her. She stumbled and fell, and all she could do was watch as her baby headed to the cliff’s edge. She screamed, “Stop, Tabby, no, wait for mommy.” All to no avail, Tabby didn’t hesitate. She kept on running in her stumbling baby gait.

Sarah screamed, “Tabby, no,” and tears flowed down her face, and she was terrified to watch her baby as she took a step off the edge. Sarah hadn’t noticed the man who put out his arm and scooped little Tabby up as her feet cleared the edge. “Whoa there, little one.” Tabby stared at him and pointed, “Water, pretty water.”

Sarah reached them and snatched Tabby out of his grip. “Oh, thank God, sir, you saved my baby. Thank you so much.”

“You are welcome, but you had no business bringing a toddler up here like that. They move too fast.”

“Well, sir, you can tell that idiot over there who thought this was a brilliant idea all because he was bored and wanted to see the cliffs.”

“Ow, Archie,” Dana turns around and gives Archie a shove away from her. “It is dark in here, and the last thing I need is you kicking my heel. That hurt! Why I allowed you to persuade me to enter this dark, creepy building is beyond me. We could have stayed outside on the steps and watched the pond while we talked. Instead, you have me hiking through a dank old building and walk on the back of my foot. I admit the arch is pretty, but I would have preferred staying outside and looking at it from the outside. Who told you about this place anyhow?”

“I met a man while walking the other day, and he told me about this place. I thought it would be fun to walk through. He showed me pictures of the outside, although I had no idea this place was falling apart on the inside, or I wouldn’t have brought you inside of here. You know I try to make our short times together enjoyable. I’m sorry, I had no idea what we would find inside, and it was so dark, and I didn’t think to bring a flashlight, so I missed that hole, and it tripped me up. I didn’t mean to kick you. Look, let’s get our picnic and the blanket and spread it out near the pond. I brought your favorite lunch. Does that make you feel better?”

“Well, Archie, it will help, I suppose. The day is beautiful and pleasantly cool, so sitting by that pond would be a lovely place to eat our lunch. You’re always so thoughtful. Let’s get out of here. I’m starved.”

The Cloud

By Tessa Dean July 2021

The sun was shining after a week of almost solid rain and Riley and her boyfriend Randall were lying on a blanket on the greenest and softest grass they could find and they were interested in the clouds that were forming after the storm from last night. They were staring intently at this one in the shape of a feather and glowing with the colors of the rainbow. They were so intent on the cloud that they didn’t hear the movement around them.

“Hey you two,” a voice boomed suddenly. Riley jumped and clung to Randall. “What are you doing out here?”

Riley remained silent and waited for Randall to speak. “Uh, we’re watching the clouds sir, why?”

“Because unless you move on immediately you are about to be arrested. This is private property and you are not the owners.”

Riley started crying, but refused to look up at the man who had confronted them. “Sorry, sir, we didn’t know. We saw the beautiful green grass and the lovely clouds and wanted to watch them. We didn’t notice a private property sign, if there was one. We’re leaving now, sir.”

“Don’t let me catch you back here again, although I agree with you about the green grass and the unique clouds up there right now. “

The Ring Part 8 (Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6, Part 7)

By Tessa Dean July 2021

**********80 words using tether

Scott brought the dog, Micro Chip, out of the house on a leash and headed into the backyard. He noticed the neighbor’s cow had wandered into their yard again. He would have to call and let them know it was over here.

Scott took Chippy, as he was known, out to the stake where he tethered him on the rare occasion he had to leave him outside. Due to Eileen’s fear of dogs, he had to bring him out tonight.

**********

Returning to his desk, Scott opened a browser and asked Eileen which background check she used. He pulled it up and had her sign in and open the report. A smiling face met them. He certainly wasn’t homely. No wonder the college coeds were all over him and since he proclaimed himself an eligible bachelor the women flocked to him and he welcomed the attention.

With Eileen, Kyle and Sarah reading over his shoulder he worked his way down the report. “Wow, what a piece of work,” Scott said as he finished reading. Sarah was horrified over what she read and was terrified that Eileen could be in serious danger. This wasn’t just a man getting his thrills watching sexy girls. He was a menace to society from what she had heard from Eileen and from what the report said. She worried about Eileen even more.

Eileen was a young girl and even though she had a fiancé she was still at risk if this man was fixated on her and it sounded like he was. They would need to think about this very carefully.

“Oh Sarah,” Scott said. “The neighbor’s cow is over drinking in our pond again. Can you give her a call and let her know?”

The Ring

By Tessa Dean June 2021

The clouds were getting darker and it looked as if a storm was coming up. The winds were getting stronger and Eileen had to constantly grab her skirt to keep it from blowing up. They were standing in front of an odd sculpture someone had carved from wood and Kyle was anxious to get to the place he had in mind to make his marriage proposal. Somehow promising to marry someone in front of this odd sculpture didn’t seem right, but with the winds picking up he didn’t think they would make it to the spot he had chosen and well, he had to admit, neither of them would forget this proposal.

As Eileen continued to fight with her skirt, Kyle cleared his throat and got down on one knee. Eileen was looking at him oddly. “Eileen, will you marry me? I know this is an odd spot, but hey we’ll never forget this proposal will we?”

Eileen took a few seconds, but deciding that Kyle was serious when he pulled out the ring box, she said, “Yes Kyle, I will marry you. You do the craziest things, but I think that is one of the things I love about you. You are right, we will never forget the proposal and the crazy sculpture that just might be a man, but who knows for sure.”

Kyle placed the ring on Eileen’s finger and drew her in for a kiss, a quick one as the clouds suddenly let loose a huge downpour and the wind blew her skirt over her face, giving Kyle a quick peek at her pink panties before he grabbed her hand and they raced across the park to their car.

The Fisherman – Image by KL Caley

For visually challenged writersthe image shows a long stretch of river with a bank at both sides. A Fisherman is present in the foreground his line cast out across the water.

**********

Long before the children came along my husband and I went fishing. It was pier fishing in salt water at that time and the kids grew up on the piers. After getting out of the Marine Corps we eventually ended up living on a lake and we switched to fresh water fishing and the kids were old enough to hold their own rods.

We fished in front of the house and we took canoe or boat trips and fished from the middle of the lake or small river. Along the edge of the water were butterflies and occasionally a light breeze would blow through the shady areas where we took canoe trips.

While deep sea fishing I was always afraid the rods and reels were fragile and would break under the weight of a super larger fish.

Now I was a “fair weather” fisherman. I only enjoyed it when the fish were biting and it wasn’t super blazing hot.

One thing I couldn’t do was bait the hook with a worm or take a fish off the hook. I left that to my husband. One day he had gone to work and the kids wanted to fish off the lake shore where we lived. I told them I am not baiting hooks or taking off fish. They assured me they would do it. I should have known better than to listen to kids. They finally got the hooks baited and so close to shore I doubted we would catch anything. Suddenly they were screaming and one of them had caught a fish.

Now the problem arose. I wasn’t touching it even with my foot on the fish and towel to grab the hook to pull it out. They weren’t going to do it.

There was nothing left to do, but to leave the rod and the squirming fish on the beach until their father got home. He wasn’t amused, but I don’t know what he expected. No more fishing until their father was around.

Three Things Challenge 627

Pensitivity101 Rules:

Welcome to The Three Things Challenge.
Below are three things that may, or may not, be related. Simply read the prompt and see where your creativity takes you.
You can use one, two or all three words in your post, there are no restrictions regarding length, style, or genre apart from keeping it family friendly.
You can use 3TC, #threethingschallenge or TTC as a tag and my logo if you wish.
Invite us along by creating a pingback to this post, then leave your link in the comments so that other people can read your writings and I’ll see it to respond to you directly. You might like to check out some of the other contributions while you’re there.

I schedule the challenge to go out around 6.30 am UK time, but pingbacks have to be approved manually so might not show immediately. This could be because I’m late accessing my blog or due to time differences, but I will get there, I promise!
I look forward to reading your responses, and as always thank you all for your continued support.

Your three words are:

WISH
DIET
HEREDITARY

**********

As someone who is considered morbidly obese by the medical profession one of the things I worry about is my diet. Do I follow a strict one? No I don’t, and even when I struggle to do this I do not lose any weight. Something is wrong, but what. Hereditary is one problem. My mother was always heavy even as a child and even though I was thin as a rail most of my childhood, I have now become my mother when she was my age and then she stayed that way until she died.

Medically I can’t seem to lose weight. I have cut calories, cut carbs (yes I am diabetic and on insulin which isn’t helping right now) and then there was the period of forcing myself to exercise. I loved running for some crazy reason and since we lived back in the woods on a lake I had these trails similar to the picture, where I could run and that was so much more pleasant than running on a street or exercise track. All that came to a halt when I hurt my knee and running was not an option anymore. I hate walking which is weird since I liked to run, but it isn’t the same thing. So my weight is part of all the medical problems I have. Lose weight they say and you will be so much in better health. Great, now tell me how to lose that weight as all those diets out there do not work for me.

Exercise is definitely key, but physically not something I am really able to do. They are trying to put me through all this physical therapy, but it is not doing much, plus I hate to exercise. I find it impossible to force myself to do something that is going to hurt so much. I didn’t like exercise when it didn’t hurt except for the running period, but that is not an option. I can barely walk and all I hear is how wonderful walking is for you. You can’t prove it by me. I hate it, it hurts and I have no desire to put myself through the pain which is intense. I don’t think these doctors really understand just how much pain I am in. And now that I have to be on blood thinners due to the blood clots in my lungs I can’t take one of the pain relievers that gave me some relief in the arthritis areas. My pain is so out of control that I can barely move and walk. I look at that wheelchair sitting there and know that is in my future. How far in the future I cannot say, but unless pain management comes up with another way to control the pain besides the 10 mg Percocets I take 4 times a day and don’t even make a big dent in the pain, a wheelchair is in my immediate future. My kids think things are bad now, but they have seen nothing yet if I can’t physically walk at all.
