Shade Trees

By Tessa Dean August 2020

Trixie was carefully checking the area out. She was looking for a new home, and she wanted to be near the water as her boyfriend, Mark, loved to fish, and so did her two young sons, Randy and Ross. Mark was willingly teaching them how to fish. It didn’t matter to him that they were only four years old. He loved them both dearly, so much more than their father did it would seem. He loved to spend time with them.

She was approaching a row of homes that appeared to be facing the water’s edge. She couldn’t tell much from the back if the homes had the requirements the men and boys were looking for in their new home.

Trixie didn’t care either way since fishing wasn’t her idea of a great time. In her fantasy, she was looking for a waterfront view and shady trees so she could lie there and spend her spare time reading. Laughing at that, Trixie realized just how little time she would have for that little fantasy with four-year-old twin boys to take care of and usually by herself since their father didn’t have the time to spend with them he claimed.

The realtor was chatting away, and Trixie let her voice roll over her. She couldn’t wait until they got to the front of the house they were here to see. She was looking for a place to call their own with just the right requirements.

They headed down the path to the front of the row of houses. Trixie gasped at the beauty spread before her. The house they were heading to had a tiny little pier out front and huge elm trees in the front yard that provided lots of shade. She could hang a hammock out there, and the men and boys could fish.

“This is it,” Trixie exclaimed to the realtor. “This is the one I want. Please start the paperwork. I want to move in right away.”

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Aug. 8/2020

2019-2020 SoCS Badge by Shelley! https://www.quaintrevival.com/

This is Teresa Smeigh from www.tessacandoit.com writing under a pen name. I am now using Tessa Dean and my new website/blog is www.tessadeanauthor.com.

Linda’s prompt: Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “spot.” Write whatever image the word “spot” invokes. Have fun!

When I think of “spot” I think of the mascot of one of our local newspapers. “Spot” the dog used to come out to one of the addresses and it could be anywhere in the newpaper’s circulation. If the homeowner/renter’s spotted “Spot” the dog walking around the property and approached them, they would win the current jackpot.

Our address had been picked since I had been featured in the paper for an article they did on my job moving out of state and how we would be without our jobs. My husband spotted the dog figure moving around in our yard and approached him. They asked for me and since I had just gotten home from the midnight shift at work I was already in bed, but he came and got me and told me that “Spot” was outside and I needed to come out. We were just getting ready to leave on a trip for the Bahamas and our little jackpot of $400 was definitely appreciated. Our picture as a family, was taken with “Spot” and it was posted in the newspaper. Ahh the memories!

Time to get back into the saddle!

It is time to get back into the habit of posting on my blog regularly. I got out of the habit as I have been feverishly working on my work in progress from NaNoWriMo. I can’t believe how excited I am with this project. It is around 40,000 words so far and I am not sure it will be a full novel length, but I am working hard on it while at the same time doing live streams and videos for youtube. I have 58 subscribers to my youtube channel so far and I am stoked. Here’s the link to my youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSpNS-6gfJ0s8eD1berLwQg

My current work in progress is a thriller. It has been so much fun planning and writing this. I have never written a thriller before. I kept changing my villain, but there are clues pointing to all the main characters so you will have no idea who did it, if I did it right, of course.

I am sorry to have fallen behind with my blog posts, but I am super busy with my writing and youtube videos and live streams. Plus editing my videos for youtube is time consuming and I am still learning editing on top of all the rest of the stuff I am doing. I am getting over the awkwardness now and so it is getting more fun to do.

Good thing I don’t work. I can’t fit in all I want to do now.

What song always gets you out on the dance floor? “The Twist” by Chubby Checker

What’s your favorite sleeping position? On my left side, curled up.

If you could snap your fingers and instantly make the world better, what would you do? Get rid of the Covid-19, replace our government and stop the wars. I think they all go hand in hand.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done, and why did you do it? Went snorkeling and only because my ex-husband demanded that I do it while we were on vacation in the Bahamas. I was absolutely terrified and the giant angel fish going after food since they are used to being fed, was the worse thing. I won’t even put my hand in a fish tank and now I was swimming in a giant fish tank.

My neighbor likes to cook and he does a great job. I don’t cook. So last night he made a wonderful shrimp dinner, with a baked potato and asparagus.

So my smile was enjoying a plate full of shrimp.

#WeekendCoffeeShare – Writing Challenge

Coffee, Pen, Notebook, Caffeine, Cup

Hey everyone, this is Teresa Smeigh from www.tessacandoit.com and I am posting on my new blog www.tessadeanauthor.com. I am writing with a pen name now.

Thanks to Eclectic Alli for hosting this prompt.

If we were having coffee, for one thing I wouldn’t have coffee as I don’t drink it and it is way too hot anyhow. I am mainly drinking water only or occasionally I will make a pitcher of ice tea. You can choose your poison.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I am working on my new novel for NaNoWriMo and keeping slightly ahead of target for the month. I count anything to do with writing in my 3 hours a day goal. If I am writing great. If I am watching a how-to video that is also great. As long as it deals with writing it is fine. Still trying to come up with a title for the book. That is proving a little harder as the subject leads to titles used a few times already which I am told you can’t copyright a title so that isn’t a problem, but I would like something a little different. It has a working title of “Dangerous Obsession.”

My dad has recovered from Covid-19 and on Wednesday night my sister and I are going to the nursing home to visit. Visitation is being allowed by the governor but must be held outside and within social distancing guidelines. Fine with us since we have no desire to go inside the building which is riddled with the virus.

I tossed the outline I struggled all of June with and am pantsing my books as usual. It is in my head and there is no need for an outline. All I really need is a list of character names as they get confusing at times and their relation to the protagonist. Still trying to figure out how to use different POVs (point of view) because I think that will add some necessary parts of the story that would be missing if I was just telling it with a narrator, the protagonist. I need to get inside the heads of those other characters.

I had the second injection on my spine and I am in worse pain than the first one. I spent most of today lying down to ease the pain. Sitting is uncomfortable for long periods of time. I also have to wear a back brace for timed periods throughout the day. This could increase the pain.

Be safe everyone,

For visually challenged writers, the image shows a wide, summer landscape, seen from a narrow path near the top of a hill that looks out across a valley.

Rolling Down the Hill

By Tessa Dean July 2020

Mark Lohan was standing at the top of the hill surveying the vista with his five-year-old twin sons, Phillip and William. He was breathing heavily from the trip up the hill, and he was trying to slow down his breathing and enjoy the landscape spread below him.

“Can we, dad? Please?”

“Please,” William joined in.

“Please, what, you two?” Mark is not paying very close attention to the two boys.

“We want to roll down the hill, please,” they beg together.

“Don’t be silly,” Mark tells the boys, “it is too steep for you.”

“No, it’s not, please,” and William reaches out and shoves Phillip down the hill and quickly starts rolling behind him.

Mark yells at them to stop, but the momentum was building, and they couldn’t stop. The danger of the situation hits the boys as they see the stone wall looming up in front of them, and they can’t stop themselves. Mark starts down the hillside after them, but fears he won’t reach the boys in time to stop them from rolling into the wall.

A stranger happens on the scene and quickly throws himself in front of the wall to stop the boys from hitting it full force. Luckily the boys were close enough together that he was able to provide a softer cushion for them both to land against rather than the stone wall.

The boys were crying, and Mark stumbles down the last few feet to land near them. He grabs them in a hug, thanking the stranger.

“Thank the kind man, you two. I don’t know what got into you.”

After the boys thank him, they stand quietly by their father. They are no longer eager to get very far away from him, hugging him tightly.

Preheat the Oven

By Tessa Dean July 2020

I looked at the kitchen sink and surrounding area. The clean dishes were in the drainer and the counters and sink were full of dirty dishes. My mother and father were on their way over and I had about five minutes to straighten this kitchen up or my mother would give me a lecture on cleanliness.

I grabbed the drainer and shoved the drainer and clean dishes into the oven. I opened the dishwasher and threw all the dirty dishes into it and jammed it shut.

“Janet, preheat the oven, I brought over a lasagna for dinner,” my mother said.
