Celebrities and Families

By Tessa Dean October 2022

I don’t get to see my family much. I have siblings, but one of them lives in North Carolina, so I only see him when a parent dies, and since the last parent passed in June, I doubt I will ever see him again. My sister, I do occasionally see for family outings.

I have three children. My two daughters live in New Jersey near me, and a son in South Carolina. Another part of my family I rarely see. He doesn’t have children of his own, just the children of the woman he lives with, so I am not missing any grandchildren in the true sense of the word.

During lunch one day in the dining room, they played the story of Desi and Lucy. I watched “I Love Lucy” as a child, and in all these years, I never knew the two celebrity stars weren’t happily married as the show portrayed. Since I had nothing better to do, I started to watch the old shows and the family movies directed by their daughter Lucie Arnaz and later one with their son, Desi.

I was surprised to find out that Lucy and Desi had gotten divorced since Desi was cheating on Lucy. I may have heard it through the years and just not remembered it. I remember watching the later shows she made with her two children, but I never noticed why Desi was not part of the shows. I am not sure if I was just indifferent to him not being on there or whether I missed the announcements of their divorce. I was considerably younger, so I might still have been a child when all that happened, and I just watched “I Love Lucy” over and over from beginning to end.

Their children had found all these family movies and learned more about their family and I am now watching them, but for some reason, they are making me cry. I just thought they were the perfect family. As an adult, I know that Hollywood actors don’t have the best of marriages, although a lot of it is kept private if possible.
