The Dare
By Tessa Dean October 2022
They had been dared by their school friends to enter the haunted house. Tommy and Stan were unsure of this, but they didn’t want their friends to think they were scared. Tommy turned on the flashlight, and Stan opened the door. Just as they crossed the threshold, the flashlight went out, and the door slammed. They froze in horror. “Do you have extra batteries for this flashlight, Stan?” Tommy asked him.
“No, I don’t carry batteries around,” Stan said.
“But you knew we were coming here, so why didn’t you bring extra?”
Just then, spooky sounds were heard. Both boys turned to run to the closed door. When they finally got it open, their friends were all outside laughing except for the lucky boy who got to turn on the tape player. He wasn’t laughing, though. He came charging out of the house right behind Tommy and Stan. He was babbling something about ghostly sounds, but not from the tape recorder he had taken in.
All the kids turned and ran except for the older kids who had set up the house to scare the younger kids. They sat upstairs in one of the rooms and drank their beer, laughing at the kids who had run in fear. They turned off the tape recorder and that’s when they heard the ghostly sounds and made to run themselves, but the door was locked and they couldn’t unlock it. One of the boys broke a window, and they all climbed out and ran too.
