The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS May 18, 2024

**********

A recent smell permeating the area of the corridor I live on was rank. It took them a while to pin down whose apartment it was coming from. Eventually, they came across one of the residents who had an accident and was sitting in a pile of her own excrement. She had no idea that it had happened. She was on her way downhill, and that was just one of the things that had happened to her. She had to be cleaned up, and it took a while for the smell to go away. Sadly she passed away a few weeks later. We knew she was slipping mentally, but we had no idea she had physical issues. The staff wasn’t allowed to tell us what was going on.

Thanks to Natalie, the Explorer, for hosting this prompt.

Grab a chair and something to drink. If you were here, I would tell you that I am working diligently on my prompts that I write and post to my blog. They are slowly getting longer than just a few sentences. I write a lot of flash fiction and short stories. I am spending more time working on the memoir. I don’t expect to publish the memoir as I am simply writing it more as a way to express my feelings in words. It isn’t something that I would like to publish because it would end up hurting my family, but it is real to me and so I need to get it out. There are a couple of people I might let read it once it is done, but it is not for public consumption. I did publish what I thought was a memoir on my blog, but the editor told me that it was more like an autobiography. I have had people read it though and it is still there on my old blog. If you go to www.tessacandoit.wordpress.com and go to the top of the page and select “Government Property – A Memoir of A Military Wife” from the pages up there it will link to the one the editor called an autobiography. It is interesting on it’s own, but doesn’t contain the upsetting part of my life.

The food around here is getting worse. I can’t eat most of it, and I am losing weight, which is a good thing, but not a healthy way of doing it. Our meal the other day was 2 oven fried pierogies that were rock hard and the potato inside was powdery. And we only had a piece of kielbasa, no roll. That was the whole meal. So all I could eat was the meat. That is not even a meal if it had been cooked correctly. They are supposed to work within the different patient’s diets, but that doesn’t happen either.

Mother’s Day I was alone, but the day before, I received a package from my son containing a wreath for my door and then my daughter and granddaughter showed up with my groceries and hung the wreath for me and gave me an Amazon gift card. My other daughter finally texted me at the end of the night. At least I heard from her eventually.

My one and only granddaughter, graduated from College before she graduated from high school. They had a special program where she could take college courses along with her high school courses. She graduated with an Associates Degree and will start in the fall as a Junior. We are definitely proud of her. She worked hard for that degree.

Things are changing around the facility I live in and some of them are good and some of them are not so good. Just have to roll with the punches.

Your final three words for this week are:
SMOKE
STREAM
MISTY

***************

The area around the stream seemed misty. Oh wait, that might be smoke instead. We lived near a national forest and I had heard that there were forest fires and this could be smoke from that fire and not mist.

Opening the door and heading outside towards the stream, I noticed the smell of smoke and that settled the question of whether it was mist or smoke. Hopefully the fires won’t get too close to us.
