The drivers with their horses and carriages waited for a customer to approach them. The air was cold, so they had heavy blankets to cover their riders. A lone man approached one of the drivers and said, “Are you available for a long ride? I want to take my girlfriend on a long drive and then stop so I can propose to her.”
“Oh, yes, sir, I can do that. How romantic. Where do you want me to stop?”
“Can you just drive for 45 minutes and then stop? I will know why you are stopping, but she won’t. It will be a surprise for her.”
“I will take you over by the waterfall. I don’t think they are frozen yet. That is the most romantic spot in the park.”
“That sounds wonderful. Let me get her out of the car and bring her over. Don’t take another customer. Here, I will pay you now, so you won’t need to take another passenger.” He handed over the money to cover the ride. The driver took the money and got a warm blanket to cover them with.
They had been riding for around 45 minutes when the driver pulled up to the waterfall and stopped the carriage. He turned around to await further instructions. The man, his heart pounding with nervous anticipation, stepped out of the carriage and turned toward his girlfriend. He got down on one knee and said, “Sharon, will you marry me? I love you and want you to be my wife.”
Startled, she didn’t say anything at first. She just looked at him. He pulled out a ring box and opened it to show her the ring. She was still speechless. “I don’t know, Jason. I don’t think my parents would approve.”
Now, he was speechless. “What do you mean? Are you saying no?”
“I am afraid I can’t say yes at this point. My parents don’t like you. My dad just told me the other day how he felt about us. I was going to break up with you after tonight’s date.”
“But, Sharon, we don’t need their approval. We are both adults.”
“Jason, I would never do something my parents don’t approve of. I can’t marry you, I am sorry. We are breaking up. Please take me home.”
The driver felt sorry for the guy. He had to be embarrassed at this point and now they had a long drive back to his car.
The man returned to the carriage and motioned for the driver to take them back. He was embarrassed and hurt. Plus, he didn’t have the money for the ring and didn’t know if the jeweler would take it back. Probably not, though, since he had it engraved with the date and proclaimed his love for her. He should have listened to his friends. They had warned him about her, but he didn’t want to believe them. Now he was alone and stuck with a ring he couldn’t afford and couldn’t do anything with. He would have to talk to the jeweler about the engraving. If he could remove it, he would never do that again. While they drove, he Googled engraving a ring and could he engrave over it. He found out he might be able to get it removed depending on the material the ring was made out of. He had to hope it was removable. He didn’t look at Sharon and called a cab for her when they got back to his car. He wasn’t driving her home. He couldn’t wait to get out of her sight. He paid for the cab in advance and left him a tip, so she didn’t have to pay for it once she got home. Her dad would be mad enough that he sent her home alone in a cab, but he couldn’t be around her any longer.
