The Shot!

By Tessa Dean June 2024

Our boss gave us an hour for lunch, so Julie and I took a walk in the park across the street. It was a break from the seriousness of the current trial. We were best friends but worked on opposite sides of the law. To hear us in court, you would think we hated each other, but in real life, it was just the opposite. Today was no different. We came out of the courthouse and headed toward the park. We could hear the children playing on the playground, so we walked over to watch them play.

Suddenly, there was a loud pop. It sounded like a gunshot, and we looked around to see what was happening. We watched as panicked adults and children scrambled to get away. Someone fell to the ground, blood dripping out of a wound to the chest. I recognized the wounded man as John Martin, the District Attorney at the current trial.

Julie and I ran over to John and tried to stop the bleeding. Someone in the crowd had already called 9-1-1. Sirens sounded in the distance. The police and ambulance arrived and took over. We were questioned, and let go. We got back to the courtroom in time to hear the judge giving a ruling to end the trial until further notice. John was still alive when we left the park, but he was in serious condition.

Reena’s Xploration Challenge #334

Reena’s Xploration Challenge Rules

If you find the above image overwhelming, just choose one line and let it be your inspiration.

It would be fun to read a part of it included in your piece, though it is not mandatory.

Here are the two that stood out to me the most.

Do what you love, and do it often. I love to write and also read. I spend every day writing from my list of writing prompts and read at each meal, at bedtime and when I take my nebulizer meds and just have to sit there.

If you don’t like your job, quit! I hated every job I had pretty much, but I couldn’t bring myself to quit because I hated to hunt for a new one. If I waited long enough I usually got laid off. My jobs weren’t strong economically. I think eight years was the longes job I ever had.

Lilacs!

Tessa Dean June 2024

I didn’t have the strength in my fingers to pick the blooms off the lilac bush. Lilacs are my favorite scent. They need sunny spots to grow, so we had trouble planting them in our yard due to all the trees and their shade. We had several bushes in the few sunny spots sprinkled throughout the yard. Lilacs bloom in several colors. You can find them in white, violet, pink, blue, red-purple, and dark purple. There is even a yellow variety known as “Primrose.”

Lilac is my favorite scent. I always choose it when it is available in soaps or candles. Lilacs are edible. I personally have never tried to eat them. They make nice cake decorations though.

Can You Tell A Story In…

Esther’s Rules:

Can you tell a story in 33 words? You must use the following words somewhere in the story:

  • TOUPEE
  • HICCUP
  • MASTERMIND
  • CRUMBLE
  • SQUIRREL

**********

I adjusted my toupee. A hiccup caused me to lose sight of the squirrel. What kind of mastermind loses sight of their quarry during a hiccup? I felt the plan crumble before me.

I am also using the Word of the Day Challenge which is bottle.

**********

Saturday was a big sports day for us with the children. We started the day with the kids and their soccer games. I packed a cooler and tote bag with bottles of juice, water, and goldfish crackers for my toddler. He needed to be occupied during the games, or he would run out onto the field. I set him up on a blanket with his bag of goldfish and a bottle of juice. I sat beside him to ensure he didn’t get up and run out onto the field.

While we were watching the game, a group of boys walked down the field and stopped just before us. Even though they were young, they weren’t short enough to allow us to see the game from where we sat. I got up and headed over to them to ask them to move down the field and not stand in front of those of us who were sitting on blankets watching the game. They mouthed off and made such a ruckus that the referee called for a time-out.

The referee approached us and asked us what the problem was. I explained that they were standing in front of us, and we couldn’t watch the game because they were blocking our view. The referee told the boys to move over so they weren’t standing in front of the people sitting on blankets to watch the game. Reluctantly, they moved over, but the looks they gave us weren’t happy ones. I hoped we wouldn’t have problems with them later on when we went to leave after the game. My son needed to go to the bathroom, and since we were sitting next to the woods, I decided to take him back there to go to the bathroom since he only needed to pee. As we headed back into the woods and out of view of the spectators, he became covered in spores from the moss that covered the ground. I brushed him off as well as I could. This wasn’t such a good idea after all. Since we were already back there, I had him pee, and then we returned to our blanket. My husband asked me what was all over him and I explained about the moss spores we encountered. We heard some cheering and discovered our boys had won the soccer game. We cheered with the rest of the crowd and then packed up our stuff to leave. I kept my eye on the boys who had bothered us earlier, but they were interested in something else down the field, and no one bothered us when we left.
