Up or Down?

By Tessa Dean June 2024

As we arrived at the small town airport, we were immediately struck by its unique features. It was a two-story building, a rarity in airport design, with a luggage conveyor belt on the first floor. The second floor, which housed the 3 gates that operate out of this airport, was a testament to the efficiency of this small town. Despite our late arrival and the rush, we couldn’t help but notice the thoughtful detail of arrows painted on the steps, guiding us on our way.

We headed up the stairs once we had placed our luggage on the conveyor belt, which would take it out to be loaded onto the planes. Ours was the only plane taking off at this time, a testament to the airport’s efficient scheduling. They staggered the gates and take off and landing times to avoid accidents, a practice that ensures the safety of all passengers.

The airport was quiet, as each small plane was designed to ferry passengers to the nearest large airport for flights out of the county. Our journey, from this small town to Denver, was the first leg of our exciting adventure to Paris, France. We were filled with anticipation as we boarded the commuter plane, knowing that the next stop would be the bustling Denver airport, where we would catch our flight to Paris in the morning.

Veronica, with a resolute sense of anticipation, was waiting for the elevator. Her eagerness to use the computer in the school’s library was palpable, and she needed to get up there before other students had taken all of the available computers. She waited a beat before entering the elevator that had just arrived, as she recognized her teacher, and she had past-due homework. She didn’t want to ride up with her teacher, so she held back for the next elevator car to take her up.

With the last computer in sight, Veronica swiftly signed in and settled at her seat. Her textbooks lay on the desk, a reminder of her academic responsibilities. But her first and foremost priority was her blogging. She had new posts to set up and schedule for the upcoming week, a task that she was deeply passionate about and required her immediate attention.

She also needed to illustrate a children’s book on elephants that she was writing. She could do that at home because she didn’t need a computer, so she put it at the bottom of her list.

Veronica had promised her younger brother that she would find the cheat sheets for the spy game he was playing. This was no ordinary task. He needed those codes to outsmart his best friend and win the game. Armed with the locations he had given her, she knew this was the second most important task on her list.

Third, she would work on the past-due homework. She didn’t want to fail that class and have to retake it. With her schedule outlined, she set to work on the blog posts.

Simply 6 Minutes – Welcome to the Challenge: 06/18/2024

ules for the prompt!

Welcome to the 6-minute challenge!

Today’s prompt is:

Group of young people having fun together singing and playing in a park

*************************************************************

This is a 6 minute rough draft for the photo prompt.

As a keen observer of human behavior, I am constantly fascinated by the diverse array of individuals that populate our world. The park, in particular, never fails to surprise me with its multitude of activities and interactions.

Today, I was sitting in the park and watching everyone around me. There were groups of kids playing on the climbing equipment. Others were going down the sliding boards. Occasionally, one would get hurt, and a parent would stop what they were doing and run over to make sure they were okay.

Yet, it was a group of young adults, seemingly out of place with their choice of music, that truly captivated my attention. As they sat on a blanket, enjoying a picnic, one of them strummed a guitar, filling the air with tunes from my generation. The unexpected joy of their music was a delightful surprise, leaving me thoroughly entertained by their spontaneous performance.

I watched them with a mix of curiosity and concern as they appeared to be drinking alcohol. I couldn’t tell for sure, but I knew it wasn’t allowed in the park, as drinking in public was not allowed in our town. They continued drinking, seemingly oblivious to the rules. It was not much later when a park attendant approached the group and told them that they couldn’t drink in the park. If they didn’t leave, he would call the cops, he warned. As they packed their things and left, I couldn’t help but reflect on the fleeting nature of such unexpected encounters, and how they can bring a touch of color to our otherwise mundane lives.

Fandango’s Story Starter #154

Fandango’s Story Starter

It’s time for my weekly Story Starter prompt. Here’s how it works. Every Tuesday morning (my time), I’m going to give you a “teaser” sentence or sentence fragment and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to build a story (prose or poetry) around that sentence/fragment. It doesn’t have to be the first sentence in your story, and you don’t even have to use it in your post at all if you don’t want to. The purpose of the teaser is simply to spark your imagination and to get your storytelling juices flowing.

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

It wasn’t that long ago when Ethan was rarely bothered by mosquitos, but this year he’s being eaten alive by them.

If you care to write and post a story built from this teaser, be sure to link back to this post and tag your post with #FSS. I would also encourage you to read and enjoy what your fellow bloggers do with their stories.

Mosquitos

By Tessa Dean June 2024

It wasn’t that long ago when Ethan was rarely bothered by mosquitos, but this year he’s being eaten alive by them. He looked at the can of spray that claimed it protected you from mosquito bites, but he flung it across the room. It hadn’t worked. He was still covered with the itchy bites from last night’s party. At this rate, he would have to stay cooped up inside the house all summer. The excessive rainfall didn’t help as mosquitos like the rain and heat of summer, and let’s face it, where he lived now, it was summer almost year round. He should never have bought this new house and relocated, but he didn’t know that mosquitos were so prevalent here before he moved. He had also been warned about the mosquitos spreading disease and to try and avoid them as much as possible.

From his research, he realized that the pond of stagnant water in the backyard was a favorite breeding ground for mosquitos. He would have to look into draining and filling the pond with dirt. Just then, another mosquito flying around landed on his arm and bit him. He slapped it, killing it so that one wouldn’t bite him again.
