The Burglar (Fiction)

By Tessa Dean November 2022

It had been my intent to hide in my sister’s closet and scare her when she opened the door once she got home from her date and went to hang up her fancy dress. She wouldn’t dare toss that on the floor. I made myself comfortable with a plate of snacks and a drink, and a book that I could read by flashlight until she got home.

The time passed, and finally, I heard her bedroom door open. I got ready to jump out and scare her, but I was the one who got scared. A burglar had picked our house to rob, and he opened her closet to see if she had anything good hidden. He found me, and I screamed my head off until my dad arrived in the room with his shotgun ready. He told me to dial the emergency number while he held the burglar at bay.

I was a hero that day. They had been looking for this guy for a while, and he happened to sneak in while I was hiding out, and my dad was home sleeping for his nightly shift. The burglar saw the dark house and thought no one was home. The local newspaper wrote a story about me as a hero who caught the burglar stealing from our neighborhood.
