PROMPT WORD:  FAINT

**********

I heard a faint cry through my open bedroom window, and I sat up in bed and listened. There it was—a baby’s cry reaching me as I came fully awake. Donning my bathrobe, I went through the darkness into the living room. Again, the cry sounded, and I headed to the front door and threw it open. There was a baby, wrapped in a blanket, on the stoop in a cheap plastic baby carrier. Someone had abandoned their baby on my front porch.

  1. My heart goes out to women who feel they have no alternative other than to leave their babies with strangers. And I applaud them as they could have made a darker, unforgivable choice but did not, thank God. Not a story you hear every day, Tessa.

    1. Around here the hospitals are set up to receive unwanted babies so that they aren’t dealt with the unforgivable choice as well as being abandoned somewhere. A lot of teenage mothers make use of that program. The babies are taken care of.
