“Hey, Mom, what came first? The chicken or the egg?” my 10-year-old son asked as we were coloring eggs for Easter. “The teacher asked us just before we left for the weekend.”
It was one of those moments that made me realize how much I cherish our time together, just the two of us exploring the world and its mysteries.
I lifted another egg out of one of the cups of colored water. It was a light, rosy color. I put it back in to make it darker. “Well, Sean, I could Google it and see what the answer they give is. Put your eggs in the cups, and we’ll look it up.”
We started the computer, logged in, and made a Google request for which came first: the chicken or the egg. We received this answer from Google: *The age-old riddle has finally been settled. Eggs are much older than chickens. Dinosaurs laid eggs, the fish that first crawled out of the sea laid eggs, and the weird articulated monsters that swam in the warm shallow seas of the Cambrian Period 500 million years ago also laid eggs.*
“Well, that’s an answer. I suppose the answer will always be a mystery, never to be solved.”
We headed back to the kitchen, took the eggs out of the cups, and repeated the process all over again until all the eggs were colored and decorated.

I reckon we never will have the answer, especially when eggs have to be laid first to get the chicken or dinosaur.
