Spiders

By Tessa Dean June 2024

“Read me a book, Grandma,” Elizabeth told me, climbing in my lap.

“What do you want me to read to you?” I looked at the pile of books on her nightstand. There were even more in the bookcase across the room.

Charlotte’s Web,” she told me, eagerly lifting the book off the top of the pile. I looked at the cover. It was written by E.B. White in 1952. I remembered it from my childhood. I started to read with her snuggled in my lap. She was content and fell asleep before I hit the end of the story.

The Display

By Tessa Dean June 20242

We walked up and down the walkways in the park looking for the display that my granddaughter claimed she was lending to the park for the summer. She hadn’t told me what the display looked like so we had to go up and down all the walkways and look at each display and read the little card attached to it.

Julian, my husband, said,” Here Annie, look. That’s hers,” he said proudly. I hurried over and grabbed his hand, tears streaming down my face. It was a bust of her mother, my daughter who had died 5 years ago today.

The Vase

By Tessa Dean June 2024

Nancy looked at the selection of vases she had made at a local pottery class. She set them on the table to decide who would get which vase. She kept the best one for herself, and then the rest would go to family and friends.

Just then, her cat, Thomas, jumped up on the table and knocked over most of the vases she had made, including her favorite one. She couldn’t imagine having to make them all over again. She picked up the pieces and surveyed what remained. She chose another favorite for herself and Ron and trashed the rest.

Ferris Wheel

By Tessa Dean May 2024

As Tonya looked over the side of the car on the Ferris Wheel, she noticed her husband arrive at the carnival. She felt her heart rate accelerate as she realized she might run into him before she and Tom could exit the carnival. She hoped he would head to the children’s rides section first, away from them.

He probably assumed that she and the kids were here for the night. He must have left work early tonight and decided to surprise them since they weren’t home right now. She hadn’t told him that she left the kids with her sister.

Baking

By Tessa Dean May 2024

Jeanie had her seven-year-old twin girls, Sandy and Mandy, perched on stools at the counter where the baking supplies were laid out. Jeanie recently took a cake decorating class and promised the girls they would bake and decorate a birthday cake. Unfortunately, they couldn’t agree on a cake. They each had their own favorites. Jeanie told them ordering a cake at the local bakery would be easier She was fed up with the fighting.

The girls stopped bickering and said they wanted a princess cake. Jeanie said that was fine, and that they could each choose their favorite dress color.

The Grave Site

By Tessa Dean May 2024

I noticed a lit-up steeple off in the distance. “There,” I shouted to Ralph. “I see a steeple up ahead.”

I hoped to be able to find my grandparents’ graves for Mom. “I will take a few pictures to let Mom see where her parents were buried.”

“Marion, it is almost dark out, and I don’t want to be in a graveyard in the dark. Can’t this wait until tomorrow?”

“She is really upset about being unable to attend her parents’ funeral.”

“Fine, but let’s hurry!”

They pulled into the parking lot, quickly found the marked graves, and snapped pictures.

Climb

By Tessa Dean May 2024

John, with heart pounding and sweat trickling down his forehead, attempted to climb the tree. However, the lower branches, too flimsy to hold his weight, betrayed him each time he put his foot on and pulled himself up. He would hit the ground, thankful for its softness, except for the roots that were showing through the ground.

The stronger branches were out of his reach. He would need a ladder to hold his weight and reach the more solid branches above his head. He looked around, but his dad’s shed was locked, and he didn’t have a key to it.

Stuffed!

By Tessa Dean May 2024

Gina entered her office and glanced at her desk chair. Someone had left a stuffed animal on her chair. Perplexed, she picked it up and wondered why it was there.

She kept to herself most of the time and didn’t have many outside relationships with her coworkers, so there wasn’t a logical explanation for the stuffed animal. She didn’t even like them.

Peter, her boss, knocked on the door. Upon entering the office, he remarked, “Oh, I see you got my present!”

“I told you already that I wasn’t interested in a relationship!” She threw the stuffed animal at him.
