Our beach home, now an island, was a stark reminder of the power of nature. The land had diminished, submerging our address marker and making it look like it was a thousand feet away from the house. Our shiny new white truck, a symbol of our mobility, was now stranded next to the house. The only way to reach the town was by boat, a stark inconvenience in our daily lives.

We boarded the roller coaster and settled into the two-seater car. This was billed as the world’s largest roller coaster, and I had been waiting for years to make the trip. We were buckled in, and the safety bar was secured over our laps. I felt the twinge of a panic attack as we started off on the ride and approached the first steep plunge downward.

The lunch bell sounds, letting the men know that lunch is over and they are to return to work. They don their protective gear, which covers them from head to toe. They combine the soda ash and sand to make the molton glass and pour it out on a table. They cut it into pieces and begin to run tests on it.
