Idyllic Spot!

By Tessa Dean June 2024

Caroline stared at the lovely painted bridge she had just crossed over. She had never been here before. A set of wooden steps led up to another level, and she idly wondered what was up there.

She wondered why they were meeting here. Usually, they went to more secluded spots. She assumed that they were going to talk. She always hated it when Robert wanted to have a conversation, as they usually had to do with their relationship. She wondered what she had done this time.

Much to her surprise, Robert arrived with a woman. “Caroline,” Robert began and stopped. The woman watched her carefully. “Robert, let’s get this over with. I have to get back to work. I have no idea what you were thinking, but this ends here or else.”

Samantha opened her tote bag and tossed a sexy teddy at Caroline, smacking her in the face with it. Next came a birthday card addressed to Caroline. “Robert is mine, or he’s history, and if it is you he is with, you are history too. Do you understand me? Speak up, girl.”

“Yes, ma’am, and I’m so sorry. I will never set my eyes on him again.” Caroline picked up her purse and left, practically running across the red bridge.

The Shot!

By Tessa Dean June 2024

Our boss gave us an hour for lunch, so Julie and I took a walk in the park across the street. It was a break from the seriousness of the current trial. We were best friends but worked on opposite sides of the law. To hear us in court, you would think we hated each other, but in real life, it was just the opposite. Today was no different. We came out of the courthouse and headed toward the park. We could hear the children playing on the playground, so we walked over to watch them play.

Suddenly, there was a loud pop. It sounded like a gunshot, and we looked around to see what was happening. We watched as panicked adults and children scrambled to get away. Someone fell to the ground, blood dripping out of a wound to the chest. I recognized the wounded man as John Martin, the District Attorney at the current trial.

Julie and I ran over to John and tried to stop the bleeding. Someone in the crowd had already called 9-1-1. Sirens sounded in the distance. The police and ambulance arrived and took over. We were questioned, and let go. We got back to the courtroom in time to hear the judge giving a ruling to end the trial until further notice. John was still alive when we left the park, but he was in serious condition.

The Shoe!

By Tessa Dean May 2024

Nancy ran quickly, stumbling on her heels. Her pursuer was rapidly gaining on her.

She stepped down on the drain and lost a shoe. She didn’t dare stop, as he was too close.

“Hey lady, stop!” A man’s voice was shouting at her. No way was she stopping in this area.

“Lady, please stop,” he said breathlessly.

Nancy tripped over a log and hurt her foot, and she had no choice but to stop. So she turned to face her attacker.

“Geesh, lady, I only wanted to return your purse. You dropped it when you got out of the car.”

Mystical Book Store!

By Tessa Dean May 2024

The crowd, brimming with anticipation, has gathered to be the first inside the new bookstore, which is set to open momentarily. It specializes in mystical subjects, and the atmosphere is electric with excitement.

The door is open; however, a strange statue holding a book blocks the way in. “It is not time yet,” the shopkeeper yells out the door. Come back in three hours, and I will be ready for you then.”

The crowd, intrigued by the statue’s enigmatic presence, exchanges curious glances. Some venture to decipher the words on the book’s page, but all they can make out is ‘Once Upon a Time…’-the beginning of a fairy tale. Speculations about the store’s contents fill the air.

Newcomers keep arriving, and the ever-growing crowd is getting louder all the time. People are pushing each other to get to the head of the line that has formed. Soon, there will be no line as people continue to shove their way through to the front.

As he finally lets them in he notices that the end of the crowd is running their hands over his large statue outside the door. “Is this for sale?” one of the people in the crowd asks.

“No,” he says. “It is just for decoration.”

“I will give you $500 for it.”

“$1000 is the least I can accept.”

The customer agrees and arrangements are made to have the statue loaded into a truck. The shopkeeper accepts a credit card for payment.

Banned!

By Tessa Dean May 2024

I approached a man standing before a sign holding a leash from which he led a German Shepherd dog. My Cocker Spaniel was beside me on his leash.

“What does the sign say? “ I asked the man beside me.

He turned to me and said, “No domestic animals on the beach after 6 AM and before 9 PM.”

“You’re saying I can’t take my dog for a walk on the beach during the day? That’s a bit harsh. He’s a real water baby, and I’m not keen on walking in the dark.”

“I wouldn’t try it if I was you. They are quite set in following the rules that have been set up. I saw someone being led down to the police station last week because he insisted on walking his dog during the restricted hours.”

“Well I am not brave enough to break the rules. I guess I will have to find another place to walk him. Do you have any suggestions?”

“No, I just wait until after 9 PM and walk my dog then. I can’t be bothered getting up before 6 AM. Good luck in finding another place to walk your dog.”

Lost!

By Tessa Dean May 2024

“Are you absolutely certain this is the right address, Annie?” Martin’s voice quivered with uncertainty as he turned to face her in the car’s front seat. The dilapidated building they were parked in front of looked eerily deserted.

“Yes, I remember it well. Mama and I always came here to have the car serviced. She mentioned just the other day that she had to come in for servicing the used car she had just bought.”

“This place is not open at all from what I can see. Maybe you forgot the address, and the GPS brought us here instead.”

“No, the address is correct, and I remember the building from all these years of coming here with her.”

“Did your mother actually bring the car in for servicing?”

“Well, I don’t know. I haven’t talked to her for a couple of weeks.”

“I will walk up and try the doors, but this place looks deserted, I’m telling you.”

“Fine, whatever.”

Martin got out of the car and approached the doors. He tried the handle, but it was locked. He knocked, waited a few minutes, and then knocked again. There was no answer.

“Call your mother, Annie, and find out if she brought the new car here.”

“The number is disconnected. That’s strange.”

“We’re going home now. I’ll find a place to take the car. You find your mother.”
